My survey answers were probably quite different than most as I shoot large dangerous mammals almost exclusively (other than a bit of macro)
Predictably, in the comments, I asked for a HD-DFA * 600mm F5.6 as a replacement for the DA560, but paying attention to smarter design: Shorter, with a properly engineered and balanced lower profile lens foot, with an integral Arca-Swiss mounting groove, and not painted white!
I will not be holding my breath :lol:

Pentax SMC Takumar 6x7 400mm F4 Lens
This lens is the third version produced by Pentax starting production in 1981. It is the same optical design as the first & second versions, production in 1969 and 1971 respectively.
It is in excellent condition, comes with the original front and rear caps, and includes some essential mount modifications. Lens is priced @ $249 US) with $112.00 US for extras, a value of $237 US.
While it is not in the same class as the SMC Pentax-M* 67 series lenses, such as the 300 & 400mm, does not contain ED glass, is not internal focus, making the focus a little stiff by comparison, but is NOT nearly as expensive as the M* series, and is as sharp. It has very minimal CA under studio lighting, and in the field, and can be well controlled in contrasty outdoor lighting.
The lens mounting collar, while being solid and supportive, and quite wide on the bottom, only extends down 3/8” below the barrel of the lens and the focusing collar.
This lens needs the mounting point to be variably moved back and forth to allow for good camera, lens and accessory balance. This is particularly important when using accessories such as rear extenders and extension tubes as the balance point changes significantly. The mounting foot need to be also extended down to allow 7/8” of hand clearance for focusing.
Simply adding a 6” mounting rail to the lens collar to facilitate balance, would extend past the focusing collar making it impossible to get your fingers between the rail and the collar for focusing.
The solution is to use a long drop-down, custom “lens foot” for mounting, which will allow finger space to access the focusing collar and also to move the center of the lens barrel up higher on a gimbal cradle arm, providing better balance being mounted closer to the swing arm pivot point.
An added benefit of a generously long “foot” is that it allows you to carry the lens with one hand rather than cradling it in your arms (an important feature in the field).
To fabricate a lens foot I added, a short lens plate with a ridged shoulder, mounted crossways to eliminate twisting, with a Jobu SF-CPI Sure Foot Clamp and Rail (6 ½”).
These components are new, do an excellent job and will be supplied with the lens.
This lens works well with the Pentax 67 (Grey) 1.4X and 2X rear extenders, particularly with smaller formats such as the 645Z and K mount bodies where only a smaller center area (“sweet spot”) is being used.
The lens can be adapted to Pentax K mount with the Pentax 67 Lens Adapter K (manual aperture) and with the Pentax Adapter 645 for 67 Lens (manual aperture) and one, or the other, (your selection), They are being supplied with the lens at a special price, or can be deducted. It can also be used with the 49mm screw mount camera bodies such as the Spotmatic bodies, using the, somewhat rare, Pentax Adaptor P for 67 Lenses. With 3rd party lens adapters, it can be fitted to Sony, Canon, Nikon and most other popular cameras.
Used with medium format it is a great landscape lens.
I have tested this lens, and in my opinion, using it with the Pentax 67- 1.4x and 2x (Grey) Teleconverters, it is far superior to the Pentax K500mm F4.5, K1000 F8.0 (which I have also used).
The original case is not available, but it is being supplied with the excellent Kinesis E870 XX Large Lens Pouch III, which has multiple attachment points. This lens case has a “D” profile, in that it is flat on one side, so it will not roll when you lay it down. It also accommodates many other lenses (ID dimensions: 6.5” x 12)
It is worth reading the Pentax Forum website’s reviews on this lens, with long lenses “Excellent” and “inexpensive” are not usually in the same sentence but this lens is both!

This lens is a not often seen for sale, although there is currently one on eBay and one on this PF Marketplace. Mine is not the prettiest girl in the dancehall, but did you come for pretty or did you come to dance! 😊
Many people would wonder, or ask, “why are you selling such a sought after and rare lens?”. I purchased this lens new in early 2003 and it was my main long lens until I bought the lighter SMC DA560mm F5.6 in 2014. Since 2014 the FA*600 has been a backup for the DA560 and has seen virtually no use in the past nine years.
I am still actively shooting, but getting on, and am working on thinning down my lens inventory. I have three “600s” and I am going to use my SMC A*645 600mm F5.6 as a backup for my DA560, so the FA*600 F4 is looking for a new home. Now you know the story, without having to ask 😊.
Cosmetically it is not “like new”, but is in good operating condition. I have kept the lens rotation components regularly clean, and lubricated, and it switches from horizontal to vertical easily and smoothly, which eliminates a lot of strain on the “camera-end” components.
But, like me, it is starting to look “tired” after hundreds of days in the field and does show scrapes and signs of use and travel. I have only posted a few images here, but the image set is 22 images, including closeups, and I would be happy to share these with anyone that is seriously interested.
The case is “pristine” and while it has strap lugs for vertical carry, I modified it with a heavy duty, spring closed, carrying handle on the “upright” end, even though it was seldom used. The lens spent all its travel time in a LowPro Trekker 600AW.
It comes with the original leather lens cap, the six-piece filter set, the original manual, digital copies of this manual and the “generic” FA Lens Manual, and the original s/n card, additional accessories include a Wimberley P50 (6 ½”) Arca-Swiss lens plate, a LensCoat neoprene “Snoot” lens cap (much easier to use than the original) and a new (unused) LensCoat Cover Set in Forest Green Camo. In fact, this lens was used by LensCoat as the pattern for this set. Would have been nice to have this lens cover set in 2003 😊

Important notes:
(1) A gimbal head and sturdy tripod is ALMOST a necessity with this lens.
(2) Long lenses with wide apertures have VERY shallow depth of field wide open, and it is ALMOST mandatory to test and adjust the “Fine Focus” adjustment for EACH camera body that is used with long auto-focus lenses if you want sharp, in-focus images.
