Question...? What would be the difference between a telephoto Macro lens and standard lens of the same focal length when taking say, Surfing shots and closer range macro shots with the same lens? I'm looking for a reasonable priced 70-200 or 300mm range that will do a good job at both.

Thanks for the replies and props. As far as the flash... I actually used the 'on camera' flash and I think it washed out the color a bit. The pic I took with out the flash yielded much more color, but what I gained in color I lost in sharpness. I'm looking to invest in both and off camera flash and longer lens, but for now I'm camera poor and will have to do with what I have till' I can afford them.

I took these with the kit 18-55mm. It wasn't easy getting in close enough to get the shots with out them moving, I used the manual focus and am finding my pics are coming out much sharper than the auto. I tried to focus on the eyes... The dragon fly was unsuccessful in that respect. Attachment 4452 Attachment 4453 Attachment 4454 |

Yep, 5' hip. The park was built by Team pain in Cocoa Beach. I live about 20 min south in Indian Harbour Beach. I try to get up there to skate at least once a week when the surf is flat. I'll try and get some more pics next Wed. That's 'Old Man Skate Jam' night. Usually its just a bunch of local guys in their thirty's & fourty's tearing down the place and schooling the kidies.
Question... I'm having trouble keeping high-speed subjects in focus, even with a fast shutter speed. I'm using Auto focus for sports. Any suggestions?

My name is Sean Kelley. I've always dreamed of becoming a good photographer, though, I have never really had the equipment to pursue that dream. Over the past 15 years I have drown myself in a sea of mediocre 'point and shoot' cameras. The affordability of good DSLR's have always been out of range for me considering my other hobbies can be expensive and have always taken precedence. Recently, with the help of my girlfriend, god bless her, I've realized that in order to fill the creative void left by years of 'Auto' settings, I needed to 'buck-up' and spring for an nice camera. This Monday I received, via UPS, a new Pentax K10D w/ 18-55mm kit lens. Expecting that three years of photography classes I took 15 years ago would suddenly manifest itself into my photos, I immediately ran out back and started snapping shots... of everything, much to the amusement of my girlfriend. Needless to say, I was a bit disappointed with most of the shots. Over all, I felt the camera preformed exactly as it should, I just have a lot to learn about photography! (Which is why I am here.) I was hoping that this forum would help me to I learn and grow as an amateur photog. Please feel free to give me constructive criticism when I post photos, however, considering my total lack of experience, I don't feel that I am qualified to return the favor. Here are a few pics that I took after setting up the custom settings and shooting in aperture priority / depth of field on the first night. A bit under exposed and slightly out of focus (should have used manual focus). |
