Hey Jgnfld, wow I would love to get out sailing in NL. My grandfather was a fisherman in Glovertown so I spent a lot of time in the bays of NL. I have sailed there though. I go down from time to time to visit my dad in Eastport. No plans yet though to go down this summer. Btw if you are a rum drinker you might find this interesting. The Picton Castle is a Barque out of Lunenburg and is soon leaving for another around the world tour, Ironworks Distillery has teamed up with them to send a few barrels of black rum with her....We're gearing up for another 'spirited'... - Ironworks Distillery | Facebook |

Lol I think that was how I read it the first time, maybe I just knew that was what you meant.
I have read the links you posted plus a bunch more as well. I was out today and my 16-85 was working about 75%. I could live with that but I am afraid it will fail at the most inopportune time. Although I forgot it seems like it is wet weather when the over exposing rears its ugly head. It wasn't too wet here today.
You made an interesting point that I had kind of wondered about.....all of the tests show the 18-135 is not as sharp as the 16-85 but is that real world tests or shooting a chart?

Thanks Mikesbike,
I had read a fair bit about the 18-135 and thought it was well built. The extra length would be a bonus and I think I could get by without the 2 mm on the wide end. I had read about the difference in sharpness and wondered how much difference it was in the real world. I do sell some of my pictures but many times I have them printed on canvas so I can get away with a little less sharp on canvas. I have a couple of primes and there are times when a really sharp picture is oh so nice though.
I was wondering about the 24-70 as well, it sounds like a beautiful lens. I am worried it might not be quite wide enough for me. I know I can carry a few lenses but when I am into bad weather I hate swapping lenses. Sadly the 16-85 is the perfect length for me. From what I have read it seems like the majority are pretty good but there are a few out there that don't seem to hold up.
I am thinking if you love the 18-135 and you obviously use some fine lenses so you are fussy about your picture quality so I may look more serious into it.
I literally live on the side of the Atlantic ocean in Lunenburg NS, Canada. It is the perfect area for my style because the harsher the weather the more likely I am out. We had a winter hurricane go thru last week and I was on a beach capturing 25 ft waves. It was nasty and I was the only fool on the beach but I am in heaven on days like that. I also bring my camera kayaking with me so again even on nice days it is not the ideal element for a camera run by a computer chip. Lol I should have kept my old K1000

I use to hang over the side of my sailboat shooting pics of waves hitting the boat. That was with my old K10, for some reason I don't feel the newer Pentaxes are as rugged.
Btw I just bought another boat to use here in Lunenburg/Mahone Bay this summer

Thanks, maybe mine was just a bad copy. If enough people comment and say they have not had any problems I will buy another. I really like everything about it other than the build quality.

Hey All,
I am just wondering how everybody feels about the 16-85 build quality? Are they generally good and I got a lemon? I have had one for a little over a year and it has been sent away three times now for repair. It had a problem with an internal screw coming loose twice and one time it was because I couldn't control the aperture. The last couple of times I have been out the aperture or electronics leading to it are wonky again. Even in manual I can't stop the lens from way over exposing. It will work in Green mode but that isn't much good to me, I need to be able to control the DoF and shutter.
Anyway I am getting frustrated and am ready to toss this lens but I don't know what to replace it with. Are they regarded as good quality and should I just buy another? I like the image quality and focal range but each time I go I out I can't rely on it.
I should add I use my equipment in pretty harsh areas, I live on the ocean in Atlantic Canada and the worst the weather the more chance I am out shooting. I was considering the Sigma 17-70 but I need the WR.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions
John

I am not sure how long I can go without a camera. I have my older K5 but it is in my wife's studio, lol I am not sure she will let me have it back;-) I have been looking pretty hard at the K3. I have read the K3 in comparisons to the K5ll is noisier at higher ISO lol but then some people claim that is exaggerated. I have heard the AF is upgraded from the K5ll, that would be nice if it is. Does anybody have any experience with these two thing items.

Thanks Mike, I do use the WR 16-85 most of the time as my main lens.
I was looking at the K3ll but am considering the going with the K3, I don't see where I would ever use the Pixel Shift and most of the time I am using a tripod so the extra stop of SR is not important either. The K3 are going at a good price right now but sadly I would have to find one used. As I said earlier post I am kind of out of the loop for new products coming online. Are there rumors of a replacement for the K3ll in the near future?

I thought of that and there has been a few times I would have liked to have had the tilting screen but I was wondering if for my applications if it isn't another place for moisture or sand to penetrate.
I think the K10 was a wonderful camera, I had many many miles of hiking and boating on mine and as far as I know it is still going strong today. Lol I think back now to how I was resisting the digital age (for some ungodly reason) but an hour after purchasing the K10 I was in love!

Thanks Alex, I am starting to suspect you are right and I just got a bum deal. It doesn't sound like Pentax has suddenly tried to save money on their WR bodies.
As pissed as I am to have to spend the money on a new camera so soon I have to say it is fun researching the technology in the newer models. As of now I am down to the KP or the K3. I don't think I would use the Pixel Shift on the K3ll. Most of my shots are around the ocean so the movement would make the Pixel Shift useless. Also I use a tripod most of the time so the extra stop on the SR is not important. The KP sounds awesome but jeez there are some sweet deals on the K3 right now....decisions decisions decisions ;-)

Hey Folks thanks for all the replies, I really do appreciate it!
@ Adam yes I am using all DA* lenses.
@ Alex645 funny you should ask that because it was actually a demo from a retailer. The thought had crossed my mind, could it possibly have been returned from a customer who dropped it? Maybe the casing had a hairline crack. I had it repaired at Sun Camera Service in Ontario Canada. I believe they are the national service company for Pentax. No I didn't know to ask them for pictures, I regret now that I hadn't. Does the KP have less seals because it has less openings? I will do some research on it. I had been so happy with my K5lls that I hadn't been looking at the newer camera's coming online so I am out of the loop.
@KiloHotelphoto I bought it from a retailer who had it on his shelf as a demo. The 5lls was just being discontinued and all he had left in stock was the demo.

I have been doing some research on the K3ll, is it basically the same camera as the K3 other than the 3 has a flash instead of the GPS? I was raised in NL basically lived in my grandfather's fishing boat and now have a cottage on the Northumberland Strait in NB and home in Lunenburg NS. My whole life is salty;-)
I am considering the K3ll but will have a look at the K-70 as well.

My K10 was a tank. I think it was the longest camera I had owned and probably had the most wear and tear. Lol I had it during my younger years of sailing in any weather and hiking in snowstorms.
I loved the features and capabilities of my lls and would prefer to be at least on par or higher

I totally get that but my point is nothing has changed in my 30 years of shooting with Pentax and this is literally the first camera that hasn't held up

Hey All,
Sorry if this has been beaten to death already and I swear this is not a rant. I am just looking for advice what direction I should take next.
I have been using Pentax since I bought my ME Super brand new close to 30 years ago. I admit my gear does live a hard life, I live next to the ocean and 99% of my shooting is from the beach or my boat. In saying all of that not much has changed in my 30 years of shooting, lol ok I prob don't shoot in the blistering cold as much as I did when I was younger;-) I prob change camera's on average every 5 years or so and all have been in good working order when I upgraded. I went from the K5 to the K5lls about a year or so ago and I just sent my K5lls in to be repaired and the tech says there is too much corrosion to repair it. Has anybody else noticed any differences in Pentax's weather sealing? I am shocked to only get one year out of my camera. I even had a K10 that went thru the ice (salt water) with me many years ago one New Years Day. I rinsed in it fresh water and that camera is still being used today. I love Pentax and their durability but am wondering if anything has changed the lls. My regular K5 is still going strong after about 5 years of the same use but I have given it to my wife to use in her studio.
I am need of a new camera, any suggestions on the most tanklike lol?
Thanks in advance
John
