New 645z - dodged a bullet with firmware update

Finally received my new 645z today. Nice camera! Easy to figure out since I've had digital Pentax since the *istD. Buttons mostly familiar as is the menu system. After setting up to my liking, only then decided to check the firmware. It shipped with version 1.0. The latest is 1.3, so I downloaded it and started the update. Got the flashing "UPDATING" message, but never the "COMPLETED" notice. The screen just went blank.

Uh oh! Did I brick it on the first day? No response from any button pushes. After a couple more minutes, figuring by this time I had nothing to lose and having visions of sending it back to Ricoh, (purchased directly from them), I powered down - waited a few secs - and powered back up. Whew! Came up normally. Checking the firmware version, it shows 1.3. Reformatted the card and ready to go. Was scared for a moment there.

Nice series. I love the first one, and the last one the best. The tight crop of the last one shows his intensity.

Abstract need advice on this portrait

I'm not an expert by any means, but since you asked... My first thought at looking at the portrait was that the contrast was too low. The histogram, (attached), verifies this. I also tried sharpening it a bit, but think I went too far. Also attached is my "before and after" attempt. I agree with the crop suggestion, but went just a little tighter to remove the upper right girl. You certainly captured the essence of the man. Well done!

Incorrect information on B&H web site for the FA* 645 300/4 lens

Was excited about the sales price for the 645 FA* 300/4 and ordered one. Since I use protective filters on ALL of my lenses, I order the filter size that the web site recommends. On both the "Recommended Accessories" section as well as on the SPECS section, it shows a 67mm filter size.

Ordered the lens and a Heliopan filter. The filter was delivered the other day, but since I wasn't home at the time of delivery, the FedEx driver has to come back for me to sign for the lens itself. Just received delivery and excitedly opened the box. What a beautiful lens! First thing I did was quickly remove the cap to screw on the filter. Oops! Way too small.

Looking inside the cap, I see that is is 77mm size. The lens page on this very forum also shows a 77mm filter size. The B&H website is incorrect! I guess it's my goof for not checking first.

(Thankfully, I can use the 67mm filter on another lens and won't have to return it. I'll now have to go and order the correct size.)

"Temporarily Out of Stock" and "Expected availability: 2-4 weeks"

Later in the day in which I ordered from Ricoh, received an e-mail from them saying that they have the camera on-hand, but don't have any 75/2.8 lenses and "did I want to be placed on the list of backorders"? If I wanted both, they would ship in 7-10 days, which would be at the end of next week. We'll see. Hadn't heard back, so will call them either tomorrow or Monday to make sure my order is still active.

What is the "crop factor" of the 645Z

Thanks for the welcome. Ordered a FA 200 and a 1.4x converter from Japan this morning. Almost sprung for a 400, but decided to wait. The FA 35 can wait too. If I really miss that focal length, I'll think about hunting one up. I should probably investigate a more heavy duty tripod too.

Thank you, Ian and Sandy. Since I posted the above, I went into the picture thread and looked at the EXIF data for those pictures where it was available. It confirms what you said. After recalculating my chart, I'm in better shape than I initially thought. I have a D FA 55/2.8, a FA 75/2.8, a FA* 300/4, a FA 80-160/4.5, and a Rear Converter-A 2x coming in the mail from various sources. To fill the gaps, I'll start hunting up a 35/3.5 of any vintage and a FA 200/4, probably from B&H as they are heavily discounted right now. There are a lot of Rear Converter-A 1.4x available from Japan through eBay.

What is the "crop factor" of the 645Z

I've been shooting Pentax since 1976 and think focal lengths in the 35mm format. Still not used to APS-C conversions, but getting there. I purchased a 645Z the other day and now need some new lenses. To help me decide what to get, it would be helpful to know the crop factor for the 645Z. There are various numbers running around, which vary widely from each other. Can someone point me to the accurate conversion number?

(The one number I've been using is 0.62075, but nobody else seems to be using that number. 0.62075 translates the 75mm "normal" to be 46.5 in the 35mm world.)

Thanks for any help. I've gone from 35mm to APS-C to the Q. About time to go experiment the other way and try medium format.

How well is the K-3 iii selling?

Don't know the numbers, and we consumers probably will never get them. But, I got one! Didn't really need it as I am completely satisfied with my K1. Was excited with the high ISO capabilities and that I could put my APS-C lenses to use that have been gathering dust since purchasing the K1. Still getting used to the K3 iii. So far, I like it...a lot!

Much to my surprise, while walking in a local park near the pavilion where some workers were constructing the winter skating rink, one of the workers spied my K-1 and asked about it, and even if I had upgraded it to a K-1 II. He even knew what lens was on the body, correctly naming the focal range, (i.e., 24-70/2.8). I did not chat with him long because his co-worker started getting impatient. He must have been a "closet Pentaxian".

55 is the filter size, and would be the cap size if the hood is NOT used. The hood is larger.
