New 645z - dodged a bullet with firmware update

From what I remember with my last update the camera also shut down by itself. It could be that it showed "complete" and that I didn't see it and then shut down by itself. Either way, mine also "took" the update and is working fine.

Enjoy your new "companion".

Sports Basketball Dunk Series

I recently purchased a Pentax D FA* 70-200 from the Marketplace and last night had my first chance to shoot a basketball game with it. Late in the second game of the night I turned just in time to get a series of shots as a player broke free and scored the only dunk of the night. K1ii with Pentax D FA* 70-200.

Same photo as above with a different crop.

Nice set-up!
I'm also a late adopter, got my 645z less than a year ago.
Since then, I've tried many of the lenses, and finally settled on A35, FA45-85, FA120, FA*300, and A*600.
Two tripods, a lighter one with geared head, and a heavier one with gimbal head for the two long telephotos.
I'm delighted with the IQ and the ergonomics!

You are going to be in hog heaven my friend. Had my Z since it first came out, early adopter. Still totally in love with it. One interesting thing: the aspect ratio on the Z makes wides seem wider to me, such that my real wides don't get tons of use, while the 35 and 55 get a lot. Especially the DFA 55, which I love---yet on 35FF it's not an FL I use much.

The crop factor of the 645Z relative to the K-1 is 0.78

The FA645 75/2.8 gives a similar angle of view on the 645Z as a 58mm lens would on the K-1, whereas the DFA645 55/2.8 equates roughly to 43mm as Ian points out above

One of the hurdles is that they have different aspect ratios, the cropped 645 is 44x33mm and 35mm is 35.9x 24mm. How many come up with for crop factor is by using the diagonal dimension .

cropped 645 55mm and 35mm as 43.18

43.18/55=0.785 crop factor
If you are going to use the full width let's say your final image is 16 by 9 aspect, then 35.9/44= 0.815 crop factor

I was checking out the Japanese Pentax site and discovered that an update to DCU5 was available.
The new version is 5.9.5 uploaded on October 18th.

Changes to V5.9.5 from V5.9.4

[18. October 2022] Digital Camera Utility 5 (Version 5.9.5) Windows Updater

[Improve from previous Versions]
  • When printing JPEG images with the image finish set to "Monotone" in the custom image and the toning color set to cold or warm in the detail parameters, the colors would become darker.

[Corrections from previous Versions]
  • Corrected --- Overexposure when trying to develop a K-1/K-1 Mark II image with a reversal film finish.

  • Corrected --- When frame-by-frame advance is performed in the current folder image list where a check-marked image file exists, only the check-marked image is subject to frame-by-frame advance when the image file with the check mark is reached.

DA 20-40 f/2.8-4 Limited hood cap size???

What's in the box is really not a lens hood - it's a trim ring. I put mine away fro safekeeping and got a real 55mm hood from B&H. Marketed as a Vello, it's a two-part design with a ring that stays on the lens and a hood that's held on by ball bearings under spring tension. It's super easy to mount and reverse the hood for storage.

65 is probably correct from a quick measurement I took with a tape measure. The inside measurement of the hood looks closer to 64, I would imagine either may work. Sounds like a good idea, I may try that too.

I'm loving this Camera!

I told the wife I was going out to take some photos and I'll be late home, 300kms driving and 7hrs later I returned home. The night sky was crystal clear and my intention was to find a good place to shoot and wait for the sun to set and try and use the Astro function on the K1. I was sidetracked on the way and it was dark before I found anywhere to shoot so i had to set up on the side of the road as it was pitch black. All pictures are taken with the Pentax DFA 28 - 105.

*I had trouble with getting the right focus at night, something I need to learn.
* I did do longer exposures for the ASTRO function to work but this shorter exposure 25sec gave the best result

Grizzly sow and cub. This is a K1 shot; low light, 6400 iso. She was gracious enough to pose for me.

First time with sports shooting with K-1 and DFA 70-200. Focus tracking much improved over the K-3 in my opinion. My only complaint is the slow buffer.

I've been playing with a few short(ish) telephoto landscapes -the detail (here coupled with the D-FA 70-200 f/2.8), is stunning - click through on Flickr to see what I mean - a bit of Blackmore Vale, Dorset, England
