Valley of Desolation Karoo by Christo Pietersen, on Flickr

One of the last images from my K1000 before I sold it after 38 years. As I haven't shot film in a long time, I might be a bit off on the shutter speed and f stop, but it should be in the ballpark for the exposure I got?

Putting 2 rolls of film through it, I realized I should stop complaining about the weight of gear these days, as the K1000 was built like a tank, and not too comfortable in the hand, but it got the job done

Do yourself a favor and get one of the models with a flip screen, the time will come that it's not that easy to kneel or bend down to take some shots. I believe the KP is a good choice, that might last you a long time.

If that happens quite a few smaller brands will either have to amalgamate or go under. In the long run, Canon will probably be the only brand sure of its survival due to its size.

I had the same problem with my manual lenses and green button metering on my K-30, this was just after I had an aperture block repair, and I thought I'm not going to send it back but decided to assign one of the user modes to LV with a 2 stop exposure compensation, as a workaround, could never figure out why it happened, as it was a normal about 1/3 stop difference with my auto lenses...

I recently took my K1000 out for a spin.

Made me think how we did it in those days, and think whether the few extra stops IBIS gives in shutter speed, is really necessary for still images. I can see it might help for video and such, but I'm not into that....

If I buy a new camera, and after 5 years 750 click use it has this kind of problem, I'll be mad, especially if I'm a first-time buyer with limited investment in the system and I'll try my luck elsewhere.

If that was a car and the gearbox failed after 750km after 5 years, I'm sure nobody would have been impressed, but Pentax should not be criticized because of a problem that continued over a series of different models, with some new ones still on shelves, waiting for unsuspecting customers to fall into the trap.

The aperture failure should not have gone further than the K-30, and although other models like the K5ii/s, which I've got, by the way, are stellar products, Pentax lost my sympathy and committed support as a brand. Blame the parent companies if you want, but the reliability of Pentax is not in the same league than cameras like the K1000, which I also still use, with just one battery change since 81.

I have never had another ILC brand, so can't compare, but I stick to my original post

Who knows how many customers Pentax lost as a result of the aperture block failures

It would be interesting to get some stats about age groups using Pentax products.

I would guess you are right with your statement.

I can't understand people having a go at you, I think you handled it very well, for an online chat, although while doing so you probably uttered a few words to yourself, that might have been not so civilized, which is also understandable.

I think that you gave them ample time to reconsider the "contract" of the sale, through chat.

I'm sure their rep on the line with you was not offended by it, it's his job and I'm sure he's had much tougher conversations and situations than that.

Unfortunately, stuff like this tends to happen in big companies who dominate the market, and I suspect "price mixups" like this might not always be "mistakes"

If that is the final look of the stand, with no Pentax anywhere, what would that suggest Ricoh really think of the future of the brand?

I don't know deep your investment in Pentax is, but if I was a first time customer and had such an experience, I would sell that lens and move to another system. Perhaps you can try and report this to Pentax and see if you can get some out of warranty repair, taking into account your low shutter count, and once it's fixed sell it and still move on, who knows how long the repair will last and if they don't use the original failed parts to do the repair.:(

Is it realistic to expect them to come out with more DA lenses, or more realistic to expect more FF lenses, which can also be used on APSC, especially considering their limited resources?

Agreed, they need something at the lower end, with reasonable specifications and price,to lure new entrants into the brand....
