First commissioned work, need help on pricing!

Hi all!

I have just been to a concert (a fairly low-key event at a university with around 200-300 people going), and I took a fair few photos of the band there.

I upload them to FB, and lo and behold, the band contacts me saying they would like to buy copies of my photos!

I am somewhat flattered, but not really sure how much to charge. There is an assortment (out of the 500) of 70 photos, of band and crowd photos.

So my question is: What is a good starting point for charging for my photos? I'm by no means an ameteur, but at the same time the photos themselves are not pro quality.

Here's a link to the photos on Facebook so you can assess for yourselves...

Any one know anything about Sonys A alpha series?

Slightly on topic, I've been tossing up either getting a Nikon D7000, or waiting for one of the new Alpha a77, or a65 (probably leaning towards the a77). but for the life of me, I can't find any communities such as these fine Pentax forums that adequately give me a snapshot into how the cameras perform on a real-world level.

That, and the lenses are bloody expensive.

So all in all, probably will be giving it a miss sadly...

+ 1 to that! Understanding Exposure started me off on how to udnerstand the basics of f-stops, shutter speeds, application of DoF, storytelling, etc ad nauseum. But it wasn't the do all and end all. In other words, I didn't learn everything from Understanding Exposures. It's all very well to have knowledge in your head. It's quite different to put that knowledge into practice! The most effective way to learn about photography is to go out and take photos. Period.

More to reinforce what I said before. If you're going to buy one beginner's book, get Understanding Exposure. The only reason I'd recommend it is because Bryan Peterson doesn't give advice based on brand, something very few photography books offer sadly.

Borrow books. Read online tutorials. Hit up Youtube. Buy a $10 magazing about photography from your newsagent if it has a few features that you'll find valuable.

but above all, SHOOT!

Buying lenses from Adorama?

Is it worth to buy from it (as well as B&H while we're at it) Internationally? Because buying lenses from Aussie shops is ridiculously expensive...

One of the reasons I was considering a downgrade was also for low-light shooting... I do a fair bit of it, especially indoors at social events etc. And the K-7 performs horribly, unfortunately.

Oh and yeah, part-time job, definitely. Plus I'll be working in-between semesters. So yeah!

Yeah, you're probably right in the sense that they're not portraits. They were taken on a recent week-long service trip, so not much time for serious portrait shooting!

Oh yeah, and I kicked myself on the fact that little girl had some random leg walk into the shot, later on after I reviewed it.

Here are some 'proper' portraits.

Thanks for the advice - it's a lot more level-headed than a lot I've gotten so far :)

And for those who have commented on eliminating vices...

I don't drink, I don't smoke, I make my own lunch from stuff I buy at the supermarket, and I have a high-interested bank account with which to save my money! So yeah, I guess I'm not really a serious saver at all

First two taken during a StormCo trip to Condobolin, Western NSW. If you're interested as to what StormCo is, here's a bit of info:

STORMco South Pacific - About STORM Co.

The last one was shot at the beach in Royal National Park, Southern NSW. It was a day's hike out to there, with pristine natural beaches, only touched by the many hikers that brave the 'wild' (it's a day's hike from Sydney) and the surfies who shack up on the coastline. Pretty heavily edited in Lightroom, as you can probably tell.

Would appreciate some constructive criticism! If you'd like to check out some more of my photos, check my Flickr, which is in my signature :D

Best to contact the administrators. I wouldn't buy it, knowing this fault. Either that, or you could continue to sell it, but I don't think anybody would buy it at the price you've asked at the moment.

Maybe you should test out some other lenses on your k-x and ascertain that its a fault with the camera or not...

I dunno, can I? :D

But I guess to be fair, I don't shoot studio. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to save any money flat-out.

Just migrated from being a Windows user all my life to Mac OS X Lion. Makes using Lightroom a lot easier, though the general filing system is taking some getting used to.

Haha, I assure you I'm quite serious about saving for uni. The only two lenses I've bought for my K-7 are the aforementioned Sigma and Tamron zooms.

For those who were suggesting the kit lens, I got one with the camera, and having used it in comparison with the Sigma 17-70, it really doesn't compare. That's why I got rid of it!

I seriously don't want to go back to point-and-shoot. I've had point-and-shoots for years, so going back to it seems like a step backwards. The whole point of the K-7 was so that I get a little more 'serious' with my photgraphy.

I think I will sell the grip.

I mostly take photos of people, and landscapes. The current setup I have allows me to take these kinds of photos, which is why I'd be a bit hesitant to sell them off, but that's where this thread comes in ;)

Extremely solid advice! Thanks Dave!

I'm considering getting into stock photography... have submitted an application to iStockphoto.com. I'm wondering how much it's going to suck out my soul!

I'd love to get some primes. I've been really tempted by the DA40 Limited, by a few members' street shots on this fine forum. Any suggestions for some older manual primes?

You'd be EXTREMELY lucky to get the Sigma for $580. I got it for around the same price as the Tamron (which I got for around $450).

If I had to, and if I was very fortunate, I'd get rid of the Tamron AND Sigma, and try and find a Pentax 16-50 for as cheap as possible. Unfortunately that's a bit of a fantasy, as much as I'd like to tell myself that it isn't :)

So, I'm an 18-year old who is taking a gap year between the final year at school and uni. I'm currently hoping to save a bit of money for uni.

This year, I finally took the plunge and invested in my first DSLR... a K-7. Since then, it has been a furious love affair between myself and the K-7 (or some other metaphor to describe my feelings toward this camera...).

I have a pretty standard Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 zoom (with which I take most of my photos), and recently a Tamron 10-24 f3.5-4.5.

Now, here's the issue.

Notice how I said before that I was saving for uni? That's where the problem lies. Reality has kicked in all-too suddenly for me, and I've realized that if I want to go into uni with a decent balance in my bank account, I'm going to need to seriously save my pennies between now and next year.

With this in mind, I've started to consider downgrading from my K-7 to a lower model (Heaven forbid that I should have to sell my gear! That would break my heart). Also, I'd consider getting rid of the Sigma and Tamron zooms and perhaps getting some sort of standard-or-multi-purpose-zoom lens that I can walk around with (having said that, I'd only get a multipurpose zoom as a last resort, as from what I understand the IQ can be quite yucky).

I'd like to hear some thoughts on this.

Would it be worth my while, financially, to downgrade to, say, a K20d (which has basically the same specs as a K-7), or perhaps a K-X or K-r. My K-7 has a genuine D-BG4 battery grip, so I'd get a nice return on it if I sold them together.

My other question is regarding the choice of lens. I've heard bad things about the Sigma 17-70 zoom, but having used it for around 6 months now, I've been able to get some decent snaps with it ('decent' is the word, and not 'fantastic').

Cheers in advance ;)

Which camera bag are you guys using?

I use a Lowepro Fastpack 250. It's a BIT small (that being sarcasm) in that in the lens holding compartment it's tiny. I have been able to fit a camera body with lens attached, plus 5 lenses, pretty tightly. I'd probably upgrade to the Fastpack 350 in the future sometime. But nevertheless, it's a great bag! Plenty of room up top, with a slot for a laptop (the 350 has a slot for a 17' lappie).
