I get a lot of soft images with telephoto lenses. I put it down to:
High ISO
Slow Shutter
Poor camera holding
Not quite right with the focus
Trying "too hard" to get good results from inadequate lighting
Experience will help. My brother would look at a photo and see the technique, I would just see a photo. My lenses need light and the images I see that are good also have light, Sun light. Drab days with slow tele lenses and moving subjects don't do justice. I'll only give up on a lens when I know I'm not the weak link, or it's heavy :)

Thank for the replys and info regarding a good stop at 55mm. The sweep past 55 was a little let down and without knowing better, attributed to Pentax build quality. I dread to think what activity in the past my copy had to endure to end up like this. That aside and now knowing better, pleased with the lens from Pentax. I'll keep mindful of the stop though and practice saying "implementation"!

Hello there.
I have a 55-300mm RE lens that when I sweep back from telephoto to wide it bumps past the 55mm stop. Is this a usual occurance?
The retracted transport lock is secure and a nice fit, it's just when in shoot mode, extended and with the stiff weighted zoom ring, dropping to the wide side will often sweep past the 55mm stop. As I'm aware of this I do take it into account. I don't want to repeatably sweep past 55 without pushing the button.
It does seem odd that it happens as it locks out the camera from shooting.
Sorry if this has been covered. My initial search and quick look at reviews etc.. didn't reveal this issue.

Seems like the thread doesn't lock but the thumb wheel. Possibly WD40 with cling film protecting the body.
Maybe a credit type card forced between the thumb wheel and slot.

I'm a starter too. For me I'd go low ISO, 100 for detail. As for light, it's time of day with sun low in sky and the weather. Sometimes the shot isn't there. That place may look better in autumn or are those evergreens.
Possibly I would have hid the broken tree and foreground hills by lowering my viewpoint.
That's my 4pence worth.

I'll go along with this. Took lens off and metered OK through view finder adjusting speed. No speed adjustment with Live View. DoF metered through View Finder +/- but didn't adjust speed. Live View darkened screen, no speed adjustment.

Don't have the II just the K3.
With 50mm 1.4 A lens, both Live View and viewfinder view green button works to set shutter speed using Aperture ring. As too does my 28mm M lens.
C Menu 27 "Using Aperture Ring" = 2 enabled

It refers to in camera noise reduction.
Possibly that is the cause.

I only went for the body and price for the K3II wasn't much more, £80 or so...
But my brain couldn't handle the data flow at time of purchase so went with built-in flash over GPS.
Truth is, I'd rarely use either but would probably benefit more from GPS and Astro-thingy than flash. Having said that, very happy with K3 as a superb camera that I enjoy using as a novice photographer :)

Sorry for the bump, but I have this lens with a GX10. Mine has the builtin tripod mounts (2 at 90' to each other). The use of macro tubes is to gain clearance from the flash housing overhang. The lens has such a large diameter that mounting isn't possible with the infinity type flush mounts. Not a problem with K3.
I have removed the M42 mount that came with the lens (held by 3 grub screws). In its place I have attached a T-Mount to Pentax K. Early days for testing but a nice fit.

Only had my K3 for a few days running 1.11. Have downloaded 1.21 but haven't yet updated. Better coding may make the camera lighter!
Having taken few photos I don't really have any experience of 1.11 bugs.
Reading this thread and a slight knowledge of firmware in general, leads me to the conclusion to update but only once the bugs present themselves or after timely use of the camera as is.
This would allow the opportunity for future updates to arrive.

I think all cameras are capable of producing bad picture and it's from this view point that decision are made easier. As mentioned earlier, the philosophy or personal usage becomes an important factor. What kit you already have and want to keep or exchange/upgrade from. I have an ageing GX10 and recently bought a Russian mirror that wouldn't fit due to flash/prism overhang. An excuse for upgrade. The choice started with K5 and it's this model that brought my attention to AA filter and lack of in the K5iis. It didn't seem like moments had passed before the K3 was in my sights. Which meant price. Pentax is my brand, so other makes didn't factor except Fujifilms X T1. I do want control, easy at hand, to take full blame for my bad shots. Old school dials. Anyway, the X T1 will make a nice poster on my wall but not purchase. Price still came in to my decision, so a little web research came up with the K S2. I could get that with 18-135mm as a do it all camera. Long story short, I have a great do it all camera in my Panasonic FZ50, leaving a clear (for me) choice in the K3. So I bought it.
Body only and compared to the GX10, it's slightly smaller and lighter and fits my 3M-5A, as it hasn't got a big overhang. Love it. Just need to use it now.
But any camera from Pentax Ricoh has to be the right camera in the end as the choice of lenses is vast.

This is an interresting topic :) Had to do a google to try and follow this and found photo.net had a topic like this from 2005, Diffraction and DOF in macro?
Did a real life fratal search too and came up with Broccoli / Cauliflower Romanesco.
Not sure what the deal is but it seems to regard detail within the DOF and that it depends on the apature size. If it's in focus is it sharp or soft.
Haven't got my head round this but light bending at the apature blades will defract more over distance to the focal plane and thus a 35.2mm travel would have less defraction than one travelling 200mm - but then that assumes the angle be the same! But defraction may increase with apature diameters decreaseing from 6.25mm down to 1.1mm.
I get why you want fractals as your test subject newarts and wish you great luck in your testing. I'm now more aware of this subject as it binds together why there's a sweet spot with apatures and sharpness.

Hi there, is the "smudge" on the mirror or the focus screen? Last time I used an air tin that's where my smudge was. Wipeing is probably not a good idea on the focus screen.
No harm in taking or finding out the cost of a clean - :)

The good thing about Pentax is the choice of cheap lenses to try out.
The 3.7 Canon would have a lens that's around a 120mm (35mm full frame).
I would just try the standard kit lenses of 18-55mm and the 50-200mm
Using the Canon telephoto end at 120mm (approx) the 50-200mm would give the same as a 300mm on a 35mm full frame, or between 10 and 12x in the Canon case.
The 50-200mm should be quick and small enough for hand held outside daylight sports day photography.

I don't have time to list all my mistakes but here's my 2pence worth.
Don't panic :D
What ever has happened has happened and it probably won't get worse so just take your time, have plenty of space and do a lot of googleing :)
Youtube might have some visual tips.
Try not to do anything until you're sure. Take some pics and see how they turn out. They should be OK and auto focus/white balance/exposure should all be OK too.
Not much help so far but more "I've done that too" so hope that helped :D
(as above could be the focus screen)

The file number sequence just follows on from the previous number and isn't a shutter count. You could if you want, change the digits in explorer to prove the point. If you use many cards then each card would continue in sequence without refference to the other cards or sequence.
I haven't checked this but would suppose this to be true. If the camera nameing setting is differrent from or changed from those on the card, a new folder maybe made.
Optical Preview (stop down) may not add to shutter count but digital (which actually takes a shot) will.
Mirror Up will also add to count.*
Forgot to mention, any shutter actuation will advance shutter count regardless of a memory card inserted to record this increase. The next recorded image will however account for this increase.
However, to record these extra counts you may need to take a picture so that the updated information can be writen.
ExifTool and it's GUI are also good :)
*Doesn't add to shutter count even though shutter is opened and closed (GX-10).
Check "Memory of Settings" Regarding File Sequence in camera menu (GX10)
