DP Review puts K-1 Mark II as second worst camera of 2018

I typically like these guys but this is a bit of Pentax bashing and I suspect its partially because its become fun to spar with the fanatics who are targeting them.

I get how messing with the RAW output would really rub enthusiasts and professionals the wrong way, it definitely gets a big WTF from me. I don't like they messed with RAW, I don't want two sets of tweaked files. If it is THE reason for claiming its the second worse camera because its such an offense, they should stick to their guns and not wash it down with some BS excuse on how they made the camera worse, its just factually wrong. If you're saying RAW shouldn't be messed with - I accept that as being OBJECTIVE. To discount the extra features you do get because you're upset about it (so no I don't think you can effectively argue the image is worse) it goes beyond being SUBJECTIVE, its BS. They undermined their argument by taking the extra step in their reasoning.

Can anyone recall if they ever declared another make's iterative product "the worst" because they didn't think it was better than its predecessor for one specific reason? I know they've dogged them but have they ever singled them out like this? If not, they need to take this one back.

I get both, but if the prices were being kept low by factory to vendor rebates, then I don’t see a reason for Pentax to lift them until having a compelling reason to do so... like a new product, which would then help drive sales. Holidays don’t seem to consistently move the price down for lenses. Though this season did seem to have higher than average discounts, perhaps implying that it may have been a concerted effort by both sides to clear inventories. Would be interesting if anyone has an insiders view on how this market moves product.

...is there any real reason for what seems like across the board price hikes back to MSRP? Doesn’t seem to me the price fluctuations really match any type of guessable supply or demand strains. Anything recent that might explain it?

D FA 24-70 with dust in-between the elements?

Right below the top front glass, there seems to be dust or lint that somehow managed to enter and rest there... I don't recall ever having that happen, does this happen / is it common enough? Any suggestions on how to get it cleaned out / idea of the typical cost? I got to imagine it won't be easy / cheap.

Something about the K-7... I was able to go back and retake these shots with a different set up years later but these are still some of my faves.

Somewhat / somewhat not related updates...

So nostalgia struck and I paired up my old K-3 w/ the newer 55-300 PLM, went to our first game of the year and I have to admit I was reminded of and now miss the burst speed / # of shots the K-3 fires off over the KP. Kinda makes me wish the K-3 III was closer to being released. Oddly, unexpectedly, I got used to / prefer? the KP "big" grip over the K-3's.

Its definitely a good thing the new netting is standard(?) across MLB and it goes relatively unnoticed while watching the game but it does mess with the end product of your pics. No way around it unless you shoot from higher tiered seats or from the outfield seats / bleachers... maybe next year I'll save on the seats and buy a super-zoom instead. (kidding, maybe).

Try this link to see if it works and you may type "pentax" to search all qualified Pentax items then.

Good luck!"

***Heads Up***

That link isn't generating a list that gets the additional 15% promo for me. Actually I'm not sure what the "Prime Promo" is on the items listed, doesn't appear to be anything. A red flag is that some of the listed items are not sold by Amazon which wouldn't be qualified for this kind of promo. So beware, you want to make sure that pull down for an additional promotion is there when selecting payment method stating you are getting an additional 15%.

There also appears to be glitch if you try to use existing points against a verified promo item, my original order on a 28-105 didn't go through for me, it sat in my orders asking me to update my payment method. I selected the same card but then did not get the promo when it went through. I called support on both issues and he confirmed / cancelled the order for me, when I put the order in without the points it went through with the promo. He said it should work using the points. I also tested purchasing one of the lenses listed on that link that didn't have that pull down with him and he confirmed no promos are being applied on them.

So if no pull down 15% promo notification don't buy. Stick with the original items listed in the thread, they check out. (If anyone has a confirmed list, or just an example please share.)

Got a ticket open on both issues, lets see what they say...

check that you get the notification of the additional promo on your payment method... I don't think this lens had it for me.

FA 77mm limited vs 24-70 mm D FA

Have both, to state the obvious is that the 24-70 is versatile and that just may be important enough when making the move over to full frame to win over the 77, it was the first lense I bought specifically for my K-1.... but, the 77 is quite possibly the best lense I have. Tough choice. :)

I used the 20-40 (included the shot of the whole field and seats to show my actual seat location) and the new 55-300 PLM. The only large lenses I saw at the event were from the press and the guys who sat right behind us (included that shot as well), they had yankee stadium creds so I guess we had some decent seats. I have to say I am happy with the results, though not sharp, cropping at full range got me more than 400+ feet of distance. Will mess with shutter next time. I'll have some other opportunities. :)

Related question (or is it really the question at this point) and maybe it should even get it's own thread...

Given the choice do you go with a FF 31mpx (K-1) + 70-200 and just crop for the "zoom"? Or an APS-C 24mpx (K-3) w/ >300?

Is there some sort of on-line calculator for this sort of thing?

Funny enough Mother's Day was supposed to be our first game but I ended up getting invited to an earlier game...

---------- Post added 04-29-17 at 11:06 ----------

...I am going to stick with the K-3 for most games and possibly the big game, here are my thoughts / reasoning thus far...

Got to go over some photos I had taken a couple years back at a game w/ my K-3 + HD DA 55-300. I was actually surprised at the amount of good shots I had and I thought they held up pretty well (I guess I am overly critical right after a shoot). I dug up the rig to mess with a bit and got a reminder of how much faster it seemed than the K-1 but I still was interested in trying out the K-1 in a game.

As luck would have it I ended up getting invited / going to an earlier game since the original post. I quickly put together the K-1, the F DA 24-70 and HD DA 55-300. I was surprised how much quicker the K-1 felt shooting in cropped with the APS-C lens (makes sense I guess). The images turned out good enough at the cropped 15mpx but obviously the K-3 at 24mpx would've been better. Regardless I screwed up and somehow shot everything at ISO 1600 so no post cropping / zooming was possible with decent results. Even at all out the 300 doesn't get to everything. I don't think the F DA 70-200 is going to cut it at a game, I'll have to do the math but it hurts my brain.

Even with using the "small" DA 55-300 zoom when I went into the box (lounge) I got a "Oh you're the guy with the camera" - as in I guess fellow fans were talking (that guy was never at the seats). So even though I knew I was being respectful and keeping to myself folks noticed and I was possibly distracting? I can only imagine if I had the 150-400. My regular seats though aren’t anywhere near a box and are actually in a last row of the section so maybe I can get away with a little more.

Maybe for just the one game I go all out and calm down for the rest of the season. :)

Wow, lots of good stuff I didn't think of.

Just realized it is a night game. Will do w/ pre-set / manual and set up rear AF. Any other recommendations for settings?

Will double check stadium security, I read its getting raised / standardized across MLB. If size is a problem I'll stick with my K-3 w/ 55-300, its relatively compact and I assume I'll get speedier response w/ more MP than a cropped K-1. (BTW - I just looked through some old pics and I have used this combo before at a game and it did a pretty darn good job, so I guess I can trust this setup - just can't recall how many shots it took get some good ones. :) )

I am still tempted to go with the K-1 (even though they say its not a "sport" camera, I gotta see what it can do) and perhaps do my first rental. If you had a choice - would you go with the speedier(?) *55-200 or the longer range 150-450? I'm having doubts if a FF w/ a 200 will reach far out enough.

...will need to shoot mostly from my seats (pro stadium, mid way back, with an overhang above) got my K-1 but no appropriate lens for the occasion, so I'll need some advice there (*200m Ok / or do I need more?) I still do have my K-3 w/ the older 55-300mm. I would love to keep at it with the K-1 but the K-3 (faster shooting / larger buffer) w/ even the newer 55-300mm might be the better / cheaper way to go. Any thoughts / experience would be appreciated...

Started on Pentax with the K-7, it should get more credit for what it brought to the brand. I've posted it before, some of my favorite shots of all time came from that camera, under appreciated and should get more forum love.

I've been on a similar trip many years ago, it was a surprise to the Mrs and I actually proposed to her in Venice, it's all beautiful and wish we had more time there. If I had a capable camera at the time or if I could do it all over again, I would say bring an everyday "walk around" lense that can go wide. I have experience with the *16-50 (dunked it and dead now), 20-40 and the 16-85. I did enjoy the *16-50 quite a bit for the width, it was my favorite for a long time but it is a big and heavy lense. The 20-40 is the more natural walk around choice and is quite light, does a good job but not as wide or long. The 16-85 might not be a true walk around so to speak but it's affordable and the most flexible. The 16-85 quickly became my not sure what I'll run into but I can only bring one lense lense, does a great job.

Is an upgrade from a K3 to K1 worth it?

OP here and boy do I feel like I stepped in it but my Thanks for everyone's input.

I believe I am at least obligated for a quick update...

I did end up buying the K-1 w/ the DFA 24-70 just prior to leaving, so part of the enjoyment has been learning (I am a geek) and I brought along the FA31, *55 and the DA55-300. These seemed to be some of the lenses there was some consensus to keep. For some reason the *55 is the only one I have not shot with. I do intend to sell off the rest to recoup some of the cost and / or to gift them.

I am still on vacation (we needed a quiet day) and so far have very much enjoyed the upgrade. I originally bought my K-7 for a previous trip here so I've attempted to recreate some shots but for a whole bunch of different reasons that didn't work out as intended most of the time but I can safely say to no ones surprise the night shots are significantly better. :) - (the K-7 generated some of my favorites shots ever here so it'll be interesting to try to compare).

What else can I safely say?

The system is built like a tank. Dropped twice from waist height for reasons I'll try not to blame on a certain contraption I bought with only small scuffs plus a broken lense hood as damage.

It is noticeably heavier at times but not overly bothersome and still quite ergonomic.

The extra dial is useful.

The adjustable LCD is very useful.

Maybe I'll follow up soon after vacation is over with some of my opinions trying not to kick some dust back up on this thread but I think it is also safe for me to say before I head back off that I haven't regretted buying it.

Of those lenses which one do you consider the must have being that you already have APS-C glass?

---------- Post added 07-28-16 at 07:25 ----------

I want to thank everyone for their answers, I started to re-read these backwards and I thought perhaps answering each as I went probably wouldn't be the best thing to do. :)

I am a hobbiest but I have been on Pentax since the K-7 and though I loved the camera I have ever since (K-5, K-3) been searching for better low light performance.

If I had a style it's that I like taking casual shots, I'm not fond of staging and thus don't typically use flash because it disrupts the mood and environment. Also probably because of it I often find shots within shots that I like to crop out. So reduction in noise and resolution would be important to me, in that sense I am a pixel peeper. I do enjoy landscape and night shots as well.

Ok, say you do go K-1 and money was no object for one lens, what would be your first lens for the K-1?

I tend to lean towards the walk-around types but I do have plenty of those to hold me over so should I go the other way then?

Not sure if its already been asked but in my case...

Only real lens I can use is my 31mm, so it'll be a whole lot of new glass. I also have a 16-85mm, 18-135mm, 20-40mm, 40mm, *55mm, 55-300mm - I may be wrong but I'm thinking not many of these are keepers after an upgrade. For now I plan to keep the K3 as a backup unless a trade in is worthwhile.

Or do I hold for the inevitable K1 II? I'm going on a trip so of course I'm itching to pull the trigger...
