Novice need help.

Hello,

Firstly thankyou for taking the time to look at this.

I am a complete novice to dslr and have purchased a KX, i am really enjoying the Kx and so far i have taken some great shots, close ups, portraits but so far i am having trouble with landscapes.
When i take the photo of either in the day or sunset no matter what i do i seem to get the landscape really dark, the sky looks amazing but the landscape is dark with no detail at all.
Now there maybe a simple solution to this but i am a novice and i am not sure what im doing.
I have tried various apertures and shutter speeds and also different metering methods but to no avail.
I tried metering the landscape in case that was the problem but that just blew out the sky.
Sorry if this is a simple problem but i just cant seem to get them right. As i said portraits and close up work have come out perfect so far.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Ross.

Thankyou Bert for the quick response. I have bought a Kenko UV filter so not pro spec.
I will take photos with and without and compare.
Ilike the idea of the lense hood for protection.

Great Bert thankyou

I to have been looking at the Pentax KX as my first DLSR and after a lot of research i narrowed it down to 3 cameras, Pentax KX, Canon 1000d and Nikon D3000. So armed with this info i went off to my camera shop to try them out and get a feel for them. After nearly an hour in the shop i came out knowing that i wanted a Pentax KX. It felt great in my hands unlike the canon, it wasnt to heavy and was just the right size for me. It didnt in any way feel cheap in my hands and to be honest the canon and nikon felt more cheap to me.
Also the Pentax Kx offers far more for your money than any other entry level DLSR.
Sony is another option only because there is so many models available in the £500 and under bracket.

I agree Docrwm the Pentax KX felt great and did not feel cheap at all. I just could not get on with the Canon 1000d or the Nikon D3000.

Thanks for comprehensive list dlacouture, some very interesting points.

why do you disable all highlight/shadow corrections?

i like the idea of being able to grab camera and take a picture quickly and i will take all you have said on board and try them out.

Thankyou.

Thanks Bert,

i thought UV filter was essential to keep lens safe from dirt and scratches and has no effect on the picture?

the polariser i know effects the picture and is only used on bright sunny days to cut through haze and boost colours so will only be used then.

thanks again.

Thanks for the help hcarvalhoalves, the only reason i thought of center focus point was because people are saying that the focus points do not come up in the viewfinder so it is easier to have center point to focus and then recompose.
Trial and error though really so i will try the 5 point focus and see what happens and how i like it.

Thanks again.

Hi everybody,

so my new Pentax KX is now on order from my local camera shop and should be with me within 2 weeks.

I have purchased a second hand Hoya polariser and a Kenko UV filter to get me started.

My question is........ is there any things i need to change in the setup on arrival of the KX before i start taking photos?
I know one thing i need to change is the autofocus to centre point but just wanted to know if there is any other essential changes i need to make to the KX before i use it?

I am new to dslr and to pentax so put it in easy terms please:lol:

Thankyou,

Ross.

Hi,

My name is Ross and i am from england, i live in a little city called Wells.

So i have been doing a small bit of photography for a while now on a Panasonic FZ-28 bridge camera which i must admit has been amazing, especially with the birth of my son last year but i feel the need to step it up a little now and after nearly a month of extensive research on dslr's, new models, best models and pricing the Pentax KX seems to come out on top all the time for my price range.
I was considering a Sony alpha 500 or 550 as i will be doing a lot of action shots and second hand they came into my budget but they are a lacking a few of the key features that the Pentax KX has and with the video it clinched it for me as i will be using the camera for mostly my baby boy and photos and film of my rc cars. Now i know the video may not be the best but i do already have a dedicated hd video camera so not a problem, just nice to have the added bonus of video on the KX.
I will also be doing a lot of low light photos due to my job having long hours so most of my photos will be in the evening and with the KX being at the top of its game with great iso levels it was a must have purchase.
I will hopefully be purchasing the Kx in the next couple of weeks from my local camera shop which is a pentax main dealer here in the uk which will be great for support and further purchases in the future.
Great to see so much help and support on here to, it will make some great reading while i wait for my KX to arrive.
Thanks for taking the time to read.

Ross.
