That's all because of a word. The new religion. ''Grow''. Grow faster. Grow bigger. Who in the right mind can thing that economy can grow continue, without stop, or reverse?
Dow Jones is on record level. Great! Radioshack fills for bankrupt. Great! HP announce 58 000 people will go home. Great! Euro is going down. Great! And so on.
We live on Titanic, and we are happy. And the band is singing. ''Grow, grow, grow''

Must be. I have more lenses then I dare to admit, but I only have a couple that make use of the 36mp. I'm not going to fool myself into thinking that those will make it to 50mp.
I wish they stopped the MP-war and turned it into a dynamic-range-war instead. That would be of ever so much more use to so many more people. Maybe there should be a numerical indicator for dynamic range as well to fuel bragging rights in that area. (Or does it already exist?)

You do realize Pentax made a A* 135mm F/1.8 and an FA* 85mm F/1.4. back in the film days. So your context is wrong.

Not that the Pentax 43/1.9 isn't fast and tiny, but isn't this posting about Sigma lenses?

Time will tell....and I suspect the financial reports from Ricoh will be the first indication. If this works well, and Pentax takes off like a rocket, expect to see Auto Makers enforce the Sticker Price on all their new vehicles....and a doubled price. A $40K Kia Rio is going to be a big winner....right?
My guess is that the Pentax Rocket idea was made in N Korea..........and will return to earth faster than it went up. Reality is a hard landing.

Hi everyone :)
Bit gutted that no one was in time to rebut George's claim that "nobody has sought to censor or curtail" the Tim thread before it got locked :) Will be logging back in tonight to delete all my gallery pictures, and request that my competition entires all be removed as well.
I will also request an explanation as to why the Mario thread was deleted but the Levitation thread was allowed. Should be interesting to see how they dodge that one!

Yep, and they have a nose for trouble too......and my Doggies never appreciated that too much. I have a great perfectly functioning K5, and so do many, many, others....that is the dead honest truth.

Unrealistic? Maybe a tad. I'm just fed up of paying good money for crap. I'm 50+ and retired. I hav th eluxury of time, a lifetime of pent up desire to get a fair shake and a fixed income as an incentive.
While I might be (just a little) unrealistic, I am not wrong and will no longer be a pushover in such matters.
Others can be if they want.

Not that I want to defend "bad" testing setups, but did you guys see how far FF the k5 shot at the end was? Nitpicking about the k20 being a tiny bit backfocused in daylight won't change how far off the k5 shot was...
On a separate note, it's not supremely obvious to me that the k5 MUST be better than a k20 in low light AF. It's possible that it could be worse, just because of some other tradeoff made to improve AF speed or accuracy or whatever in bright light. It should work to specifications though, and it certainly seems that this sample is worse than that of many others on this forum.

Why can't Pentax have AF correction that can be calibrated so as to give the same focus as LV. i.e. in this new 'calibration' mode using a tripod, a shutter press, automatically and in sequence, AFs on a chart in LV mode, then AFs in PD mode and then the camera adjusts its AF internal settings (rather than moving the lens internals) to align the electronic PD signals. It could even have several settings for a zoom to maintain accuracy over its range of FLs and even subject distances etc.

I don't want to seem mean or overly critical, but to my eyes there is nothing WOW! or amazing about these shots. They don't even look properly focused. If I had taken them I might have deleted them rather than share them.

Why the hell would you want to be a part of a team who's idea of "high quality event photography" is standing one spot at a marathon, and taking a poorly exposed snapshot of every person that stumbles by? I would tell them to F off, and take my Pentax elsewhere to go make good photos.

"My Little Monsters"
A boring, Non-HDR Version :p:
Pentax K-5
Pentax DA 10-17mm Fisheye Lens @ 11mm
ISO80
f/4.0
1/30s
Bounced flash (set to -1.3 EV on flash) inside the clothes dryer (PTTL)
Flash exposure also set to -1.0 EV within camera
Just used Topaz Adjust to get a good Monster feel. Cropped a little too and then PhotoFrame for the frame effect.
The K-5 is freaking sweet! Amazing sharpness. IMGP5464 001a by Frank C. Grace (Trig Photography), on Flickr

And my experience so far is that the K5 focuses perfectly in daylight or close to it down to ~ EV4.

Two points:
Don't post images on a photo forum if you do not want comments, criticisms and observations.
I suggest you read Falk's report as you are embarrassing yourself now. Your K5 has the same problem that they all have, you just either do not care or cannot tell the difference.
As for your images: I must admit to being underwhelmed with your photographic skills as demonstrated in the images I have seen so far. While that was not the point of my earlier comments, it does tell me something about how much credibility to give your comments, which is close to zero at this point.
Bye

Frankly, I don't know how to evaluate light EV's, so I don't know if these qualify for the discussion. I just know what low light means. Here are some low light, wide open shots:
Michael
K20D, 70mm lens, f/2.4, 1/15, ISO 3200
K20D, 70mm lens, f/2.4, 1/6, ISO 3200
K20D, 40mm lens, f/2.8, 1/25, ISO 1600
K20D, 21mm lens, f/4, 1/60, ISO 1600
K20D, 21mm lens, f/3.5, 1/45, ISO 1600 |

ozlizard,
Your query seems like a logical request for user feedback, so let me give you my personal experience with my K5 and Pentax DA lenses. IMHO, the severity and inconvenience of any of the reported problems will depend on how you use the camera.
K5 serial number 392…
I will simply list the various problems I have heard about, and my experience if applicable:
1. Stain - none so far.
2. External flash - do not use. I only shoot daylight or hot lights in the studio.
3. Freeze - do not use the camera for repetitive fast action shots.
4. FF/BF - set in-camera focus adjustment to -10 for all lenses. Excellent results.
5. Tungsten focus - my camera has serious problems with focusing in tungsten light, however the workaround is to use LiveView set for "contrast focus" which works flawlessly in tungsten light.
Regarding the tungsten light issue, the problem I have experienced is not a back-focus or front-focus problem but a complete random missed-focus. The camera will indicate it has achieved focus, but 90% of the time the results will be back, front, or no focus at all.
While I am hoping the tungsten issue is fixed in firmware, using LiveView suitable workaround for me. BUT, if I were an event or indoor low-light photographer, it could be huge problem.
So I don't have any serious issues that prevent me from using the K-5 for my work, and the images are superb. On the other hand, if my camera suffered problems that required a return to Pentax in order to use it as intended, I would not be a happy camper.
That is all I can say, but I do hope that Pentax demonstrates a dedication to resolve all of the issues that various people seem to experience.
BTW, this my first Pentax so I don't much of the history. I have about 40 years experience in photography; the first 20 with Nikon, and past 20 with Canon. I do not regret the move to Pentax.

you could try to get your hands on a 645D.. has no video so you wouldnt have to pay for that.. as far as I heard, the 645D should be slightly above the K-5 specs.. :D

I use low light available light photgraphy for candid shots and the green light spoils it....lowering the AF-assist light's threshold would solve the issue in many instances but as the K-7 and the 645D didn't need this, it can only be characterized as fudging a camera to sort of work...this would be very uncharacterestic of Pentax....I know every camera brand has issues but if Pentax cheats to fix this then it's a clear indication to me on what direction Hoya is heading and it's not a path I'll be willing to take.
