GR III firmware update to Version 1.10

This was enough for me to buy a GR III tonight. All I needed was confirmation that the firmware improved the low light autofocus close enough to the previous models.

How would you change GR?

^ I agree with the above. Any increase in size would make it unpocketable for the type of jeans I wear; it barely fits in my jean pockets as is (us skinny twenty somethings wear well fitted jeans, you know :P). If anything, I'd like a successor to be smaller, though I doubt that's possible since everything is crammed in already. This rules out a viewfinder & a fixed lens with a focus ring. If anyone wants either of these things, why not just get a Fuji X100s or its successor? Ricoh GR's form factor was 90% of the reason why I, and I'm sure others, purchased this camera.

That being said, here's a few improvements I'd like:
- Faster autofocus in low light
- Larger burst rate buffer
- Stabilized lens (is this possible with the form factor?)
- A 'P' mode that more accurately reflects the Pentax DSLRs; ie: the front wheel would be 'Tv' mode & the back wheel would force 'Av' mode. Actually, does the GR already do this & I don't know it?
- Next generation sensor: the K-3 sensor would be nice, but by the time this is out we'll probably have something better?

I also agree with having two versions of different focal lengths.

It says a lot to how great the Ricoh GR is that I can only list 5 improvements.

The camera I, and probably many, want is a retro-styled mirrorless camera. Perhaps call it the 'Pentax Limited', styled like the LX or MX classic cameras. I'm thinking something kind of in the vein of the Fujifilm X-Pro 1. It would ideally have a high quality body meant to match the limited lenses, EVF, and be as compact as possible. I've always been baffled as to why Pentax has yet to make a camera like this, especially when many other companies are doing well with cameras in this vein. The limited lenses are the perfect match for this.

Oh well, I do have a Ricoh GR, so hard to be underwhelmed with anything in the way of photography equipment these days.

Price drop to $550.

This lens is in excellent optical condition, y'all. And as I mentioned, the screwdrive is even faster than the SDM focus.

Pepe, I was able to convert the lens to screwdrive by updating a code in the lens' firmware while it was attached to a K-7. It operates via screwdrive on any Pentax camera right now; it's currently running on my K-5ii. And yes, if the SDM were to be fixed, the lens could be converted back to SDM using the same method. Yes, it's only dust on the filter. Actually, the filter has been on the lens ever since it was purchased, so the glass itself is in pristine condition.

Pentax DA*16-50 (screw drive)

Asking Price
550.00 USD

Item Description
In order to lighten the load of my kit for travel. I'm selling my DA* 16-50 f2.8. I decided it would be best to have a Limited 20-40 in it's place -- it seems like the perfect street zoom for me.

The DA* 16-50 is in excellent cosmetic condition. However, it has been converted to screw drive focus due to SDM failure, which we all know of too well. The screw focus works fantastic, it focuses even faster than when it was SDM. I'll also throw in a 77mm filter with it & the original boxing.

K20d 100k shots, $70. Worth buying?

Go for it! I'm unsure of how new you are to DSLRs, but this is the best way to go for building your system. The K20D had an MSRP of $1700 in 2008 -- not that long ago at all. I'd just add to the above post to take a more qualitative approach. Perhaps it would be best to bring an SD card, take a few images, and load them on a laptop. That's the easiest way to insure everything seems to be working.

If this is your first DSLR, it's a great way to get started. You'll have a very competent body and can put the rest of your budget towards lenses.

Pentax K-7, FA 77 Water Damage (ugh): Suggestions?

Hi all,

First post here in a while and it comes with some desperation- help would be great appreciated! I took a trip to Point Reyes yesterday and was ambushed with a storm. I was under the assumption my bag was waterproof enough, but apparently not. Luckily, It seems like my DA Limiteds seem fine, but my FA77 is making slight grinding noises when I try to turn it (uggghh). In addition, my K-7's lcd screen no longer turns on, the shutter does not work, and only the top panel displays anything. I have my lenses sitting out to hopefully air dry. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to approach this?

This is pretty awful since I'm no longer in a financial position to replace this equipment :/. It's kind of ruined my week since I've loved shooting with this equipment for the last few years and progressed so much with it. I'm trying to tell myself that a cheaper K100 or whatever I can afford will still produce amazing shots and this really won't make a dent in my production. I push my gear pretty hard and I knew something like this would happen someday. I don't regret my decision to take my equipment out to potentially harsh weather, but I need to take a hard lesson for this and be more prepared to shield my equipment.

Sorry for the lengthy rant, I just kind of needed to get these feelings across to an understanding photo community.

ISO 100 not displaying on K-7

Hi all, long time no post. My K-7 has recently encountered a pretty major problem where the ISO 100 is no longer available as an option, only ISO 200 and higher is displayed. It started about a week ago on the 1.03 firmware after having no issues for 1.5 years. I upgraded to the 1.11 firmware and no dice, though I wasn't really expecting that to help. I've toyed around in the menus a bit and there's really nothing I can find. Does anyone have any ideas?

I see Pentax shooters around a lot, actually. In fact, amongst the collegiate arty types it seems to have become the mount of choice since they are cheap and they can use older film lenses on them. I think the obscurity element and the fact that Pentax has less of a pronounced corporate image helps this too.

A K-7 and K-X would really fulfill every need imaginable. The K-7 for most use and the K-X for low light. I don't think I would have the strength to carry any lenses with 4.

This is a great thread! A lot of these images are very well composed while using the DoF effects in an interesting way, I especially like the shots by Gus- some of your best portraiture! I also have a K 50mm f1.2 but lately I've kind of stopped using my faster lenses. I find my 40mm f2.8 a lot more convenient due to its size. I also kind of feel that my shots at 1.2 rely on the DoF effect a little too much. But maybe it is time to take it out and try again.

Interesting thoughts thrown around here.

Honestly, I feel the same problem occurs a lot in our own post your photos section. I don't think it's exclusive to flickr, it's just made more annoying and apparent with flashing gifs. I do agree with what many say, it's all about contacts. I have several contacts who frequently critique me and it is really helpful. As far as complaints about the site's setup, has anyone tried looking at it through flickriver?

Thanks so much for all of the replies everyone! Lots of good ideas here to play around with.

First off, I was looking more for a place that would do 4x7 online, any suggestions? If not, I guess I can look for a lab or cut the 5x7's.

I really like your ideas gampa and wombat! Clothesline sounds interesting, but I kind of want to theme all of my shots together, so I want to have a lot of control over placement. Lately I've been thinking of buy a bit of cloth and using velcro to attach it to my photos? Or maybe I could use the foamcore. Either way, it's great to have a lot of ideas to toy around with and I really appreciate all of you guys throwing them at me.

Hi everyone!

So I'm going to appear in a mixed multimedia show to present my photos next month. I'm pretty excited, it's kind of like the debut of my photography. It will be a house show with several musicians, poets, and visual artists. I have plenty of room to put up as many shots as I want though. When thinking of solutions for me, keep in mind that this show is pretty low key, so I don't want anything that sticks out too much. This is especially important for lighting.

Anyways, I have a lot of questions about this. My idea is to put large black drapes on the wall and then attach my photos on to that. I'm actually considering passing on framing entirely though I am toying with the idea of making my own frames. I feel frames would jack the price of this way out of my budget and I can do something more creative given the limitation. Would any of you guys have any ideas for attaching photos to a cloth? Is there something I could put behind the photo and then on the other side of the cloth that would adequately hold it up in place?

My second question is where in the heck can I get some 4x7 or 8x14 prints? A ton of my pictures use this crop and I would really like to keep them in that ratio. Out of curiousity, does anyone else use this ratio? I find it so perfect for landscapes.

Lastly, I'm looking to find some cheap solutions for light. During the performances people are probably going to be crammed in the space my photos will be in. So, anything on the ground is out of the question. The best thing I could think of would be to hang some lights down from the ceiling or on the wall closely adjacent to my shots. Would anyone know anything about some cheap/effective lighting that would mount in such a way?

Some of this was really hard to describe so sorry if this is confusing at all.

Limited-lens travel package

For my travel package, your thread title is exactly what I use. On days or trips when I don't want to carry a bag I bring the 21, 40, and 70 with the K-7. A lot of times I'll put 2 in my pocket and the other on the camera. Shooting without a heavy bag is largely underrated these days, the extra mobility is so great. The lenses are fast enough for almost any situation and besides the lack of a telephoto, it really gives you all the focal lens you'll need. I definitely recommend such a setup to any pentax user.
