Tamron 17-50 zoom fail

Same thing has happened to me, my lens is less than 2 years old and all of a sudden the ring just started spinning. Might give the repair a go, if it doesn't pan out I'll have to get a new one as it's such a good lens.

Took an X90 on holidays to Spain & Switzerland a few years ago, absolutely loved having the big zoom range and the lightness of the unit. Took my K3 and an DA 18-250mm to Turkey this year, I love that camera but have to say I was getting pretty sick of the weight around my neck. These super zoom cameras are fantastic travel buddies.

Built-in flash "not available" with DA 10-17 etc., can someone confirm?

Hi Anders, it can also mean is the lens will cast a shadow on the bottom of the image when the flash is fired. Lens hoods make it worse, and going wide angle. No real problem when you zoom in, I suggest you take some test shots to determine what focal lengths cause the problem and avoid them. Same thing on any DSLR, used to happen on my K20 and K5 as well.

It's only happened to me once, I'm pretty sure it was a low battery that caused it as it hasn't happened since and I'm pretty careful with having fully charged batteries. You get quite a fright when it happens but now I know what it is and how infrequently it happens I'm not overly concerned. The camera has way too many good features to be bummed out by this.

Ordered mine last night through Camera Warehouse for $1310.00 including freight which is a very good price. It's a combined birthday / Christmas present till 2016 according to my wife who will get my K5 as a hand me down. Her K7 goes on Ebay on the weekend. Now I'm excited!

K20D, grey card dynamic range test

Hi Lowell,

That's an interesting result got with your iStD, my K20d is a bit different, I basically have 9 fstops dynamic range, from pure black (0) to mid grey is 6 fstops then to white is another 3 fstops. mid grey to white is fairly linear with a little compression on the last stop. Mid grey to black is quite compressed. It's a great exercise to do as it gives you a much better understanding of your histogram. My results follow. (i really should check it with another 18% grey card to validate it.)

You're right James, there's a lot of comment on the under exposure. I called the agent here in Australia and was told that no adjustment was possible. I'm not concerned because I understand what's going on now and just add another Fstop. The camera is great I love what it can do.

I'm doing the same course (I think) and have just completed a zone ruler for my K20d. What I found interesting is the zone V on my ruler only has 35% white, Zone 6 is 50% so from what I can make out I'm a whole F stop under exposed. This really makes sense as I'm forever increasing the exposure in Photoshop. Making a zone ruler is a great exercise, my camera is going in to get re-calibrated as a consequence.

AF problem with Sigma 70-210mm F4 - 5.6

Thanks for the information, It's interesting to see how the system works.

I haven't had much luck so far. I carefully removed the 4 screws on the bottom and removed the mount. I had a look at the contacts and their connections and everything seems ok, the only clue I have is the MF light is on when the camera is in AF mode but the af motor is on and giving resistance.

This gives me the impression that one of the contacts is open circuit, (same result with no lens attached) a schematic would be so nice. The lens works fine in MF mode with the aperture working ok so I'm confident that the digital contact is ok.

I'll look into it further when I have some more time but any clues would be greatly appreciated.

AF problem with Sigma 70-210mm F4 - 5.6

Oops , I'm a goose. The information I gave is totally wrong. The two contacts I mentioned inside the camera are for a power zoom and the contact turned out to be the aperture actuator. Top top it all off the lens has stopped autofocusing again. I have 4 other lenses that are working fine so somthing is up with this one.

Does anyone know wich contacts pertain to the autofocus?

Thanks Ratmagiclady, you made me have another good look and I found the problem. There's a strip contact in a slot on the lens that connects across two contacts in the camera. A quick scrape (holding the the lens up so the particles don't enter the lens) with a small blade and the lens works good as new.

I have a 96 vintage Sigma 70-210 F4-5.6 lens that I've been happily using on my 1stDL for a few years. The AF has stopped working, there is tension from the motor when the camer is in AF mode but the indicator shows MF in the viewfinder. Ive tried the lens on my K20D with the same result. Ive also tried cleaning the contacts with a pencil rubber but no avail.

Have I missed anything that I should be checking and are these lenses worth repairing ?
