New K-7 user w/dumb questions

So the lens resolution might be low, given than you say it's both old AND designed for film. Are you able to get anything sharper out of it in better lighting conditions where you don't have to use such a slow shutter and on a completely static subject? That would give us an idea whether its lenses' fault or shake/subject blur OR luminance noise (but since you say you use topazlabs product, then I guess you got rid of it (some loss of detail always happens, tried it))

Timed shutter does just that, but remember there is also vibration from the shutter itself. In k-7 it got dampened quite well, yet is still noticeable with lighter tripods and longer exposures (a long exposure of a light source moving in a straight line would prove whether the tripod is sturdy enough).

The perks of k-7's pentaprism are obvious. Still the viewfinder is not even half as good as it was in Zenit film cameras (CCCP production : P).

Oooh, katzeye, I'd like to get me some o'that. Too expensive though and hard to get - polish zloty (you earn less of it and it's worth way less) & Poland (most pentax accesories are not available and must be imported...; most third party companies don't even consider selling here).

I was planning to buy a nikon dk-17m and fit it onto a dk-22 to increase the size of the viewfinder. And since dk-17m's lens is way bigger than the oe-m53 and dk-21m, it's bound to be more comfortable. At least I think so. ; ]

two things i'm seeing here (or at least I think so):

1) luminance noise)
2) shake/motion induced blur

==> 1) k-7's sensor is really noisy (mine, at least). The method I use is: RAW + lightroom 3 noise reduction.

==> 2) - is your tripod sturdy, heavy? If not, then use shorter exposures/share reduction + artificial light instead. Or mirror lockup. Still, 1/13 is still going to notice some of the subject's movement.

That, and k-7's AF really, really sucks balls. Really. ; ]

Anyway, my two cents.

EDIT: Also, what lens are you using? Maybe it's just low on MTF/resolution? My Helios f/2.0 58 sure is ; ]

K7 and tethering?

Yeah, I know it's a relatively old topic, but still i'd like to add something for googlers accidentally getting here (even more cause no one posted a solution (otherwise than hdmi output)):

As you may prodably have heard, there is a wlan capable SD card on the market

Eye-Fi memory cards: wireless photo and video uploads straight from your camera to your computer & the web.

I still haven't bought&tested it though. One of possible obstacles would be the fact that k-7 is magnesium alloy.

If it would automatically send photos via wlan to a specified location, then all you would have to do is set up an automatic import in lightroom on that location and voilla, you have a tethered wireless setup for pentax k-7.

Wireless flash with K-7

It seems the issue is the same when it comes to nikon d70s. I used to be its co-owner ; ]

I suspect Pentax is perfectly aware of this. In fact, I have a theory (no conspiracy ; ]): the reason we get the strobe at our photos is because

//(those points are optional, not sure, but...
1) the companies are trying to make a camera that has as little delay as possible between the button press and actual capturing of the photo
2) because of 1) the camera and its strobe has only so much time to relay by means of a series of blinks all the information to the camera (in TTL modes), which does NOT contribute to the picture)

(and this one I'm almost sure of - needs testing though) 3) what does contribute to the picture is the final signal that tells the external strobe to fire. The shortest the built in flash can manage is 1/180 (funny thing is, the old d70s can manage 1/500...) and therefore the delay would have to be at least 1/180 for the flash to stop shining before the mirror raises and the capture starts.

So there, let's just get over it and be happy we have ANY wireless for free. And then let's go and buy a cactus or PW. :ugh:

Wireless flash with K-7

Confirmed issues with k-7, pentax 540 fgz and wireless mode. This is so annoying! And it's not like I'm just moaning, in some circumstances the wireless controller mode is quite enough to light the subject completely, not just a barely visible flash. So there, maybe with k20 it works as it should, but in this instance, it certainly does not.:hmm:
Strange though, the effect ceased being so strong once i've done a few shots on Av and then went back to manual. Strange error? I'm 100% sure the flash setting were the same in both modes and that in all cases it was 1/60s, f/2.8 & ISO 200.

Still even though it lights the subject only a bit, it is clearly visible and fills the shadows I dont want to be filled. Argh.

Greetings from Poland!

Name's Mikołaj (that's Nicholas, in case you dont know). I study international relationships at the University of Wroclaw. That's my fifth and final year. My master degree work is going to cover wikileaks and its realionship with civil society (alongside with habermas' public sphere). I'm a computer wiz, occasionaly fixing software and hardware problems. I'm pretty much a beginner in commercial photography. Previously done some shoots as a hobby and passion of mine. Started out with a zenit camera with helios lens, then moved on to some compact film cameras, got a first digital one (agfa, cant recall the exact model). Soon, as a joint purchase with my brother, we've bought our first DSLR - nikon d70s with 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 nikkor. It really got lots of action (easily more than 15 k shots) and yet it is still fully operational. My workflow, dating back to the purchase of the d70s is 100% RAW and I'm fully convinced i've made the right choice. The possibilities... well, you know ; ]. Since I was getting really proficient with all the knowledge behind the shot and got really appreciated (though not in any official way, just among friends) for some of my early, amateur-ish works, I figured I could just as well go commercial. Since serious nikon bodies cost a lot, and since my fellow photographer introduced me to pentax, I've decided to go for a k-7. Then came a first workhorse lens (28-75 tamron f/2.8) and flash (540 fgz). Then came lots of accessories. So far so good, I've done two weddings, two child sessions, one engagement and a karate sports session. I've two more weddings in schedule and i'm aiming to start giving courses in photography. Still, I' pretty much an educated amateur in comparison to some of the fellows out there in the neighbourhood, so there's still a lot of work ahead of me. As of now I've got enough equipment to shoot comfortably, yet there are still more purchases to be made. I need a:

==> secondary memory and battery. That's a must.

==> wide, high quality, prime ultrasonic lens. Tamron is doing great, but its also way too loud and the f/2.8 aperture forces me to use flash all the time, which is indiscreet and annoying. I'm in quite a bind if it comes to choosing between sigma 50mm f/1.4 HSM and the announced 85mm. On the one hand, 50 mm is not a very good lens for portraits, on the other, the 85mm will be hard to use in interiors that do not offer a lot in terms of maneuvering - like churches! No, I'm not going to buy the overpriced pentax lens.

==> another flash, maybe a smaller pentax unit. Seriously, I'm not gonna dismount the one on the tripod and onto the camera each time I need to quickly catch the moment, and the built in aint gonna cut it (unless I go"strobist-style" on the built in and make a diffuser for it)

==> cactus RF for my setup! The flash wireless is annoying, and I really don't neet a pocket wizard. And can't afford it yet ; ]

==> lightroom, commercial and educational license (plan to integrate it into courses) [awesome software, btw]

==> secondary body (the way things go, the next body i'm going to buy is k-3(that will prodably be the number) since k-5 is not much of an improvement over k-7 (unless that safox IX really does wonders to autofocusing ; ])

So, that's about it. Hope I've encouraged some of you to go commercial and do what you really love doing - photography, that is : ].

Now I'm gonna go and post here

Cheers and see you on the battlefield!
