I would LOVE that feature... tons of old glass in my collection. Let me use it how it was meant to!!! Add a tilt screen and it'd add a new dimension to my photography.

I like the framing on all three and the dramatic sky on the first specially, though I find the sky transition from dark blue to lighter blues too strong on the first one. Did you use a gradual ND filter on camera or post processing? Nice work!

Glad you're enjoying it.
After purchasing the K-01 for its insane low prices recently I found it to be a revelation.
I'd switched to a split screen for my manual lenses on my old KX and didn't realize how badly it affected exposure until I got to use the K-01. It exposes marvelously on almost all circumstances.
WB is dead on a lot more often than the KX
I find not much difference in focusing speed although I am using light weight screw drive primes that focus very fast.
Focus Peaking is an awesome tool if you're into legacy glass too.
And with no mirror, I find the focusing accuracy with my AF lenses is much much more accurate. No more having to global fine adjust my Limiteds to get that perfect focus.
Outside of sports photography. I find the K-01 a much better tool for my needs.
Glare outdoors is the only problem on occasion, but I too find the pros far outweigh the negatives of this camera.

The KX was my first dslr and though I'm waiting for the first Pentax FF offering I couldn't pass up the great deal recently on a K-01. The KX is mostly gathering dust now... For my mostly manual lens collection, the K01 is a godsend and a pleasure to use.

Here's one with the Helios 44-2

You're right... the legacy glass probably won't matter initially... that's where its quirky looks come in. They'll meander on over to Pentax to see what that quirky looking camera looks like (as long as it's available to look at) and Pentax's build quality generally is much better than the plastic offerings from other retailers. It always feels solid... Interest from outside the established Pentax community will IMO be much greater just from looks alone. I'm also confident it will take great pictures with the K5 sensor. I just hope there are not QC focusing issues and that the P mode is VERY user friendly... the point and shoot customer base wants it easy and familiar.

Now that autofocus and point and shoot customer base is mentioned. I've considered a thought. Expecting the target market of the K-01 to be these people... there are a couple of things that Pentax better get right if it is to be a successful gamble for Pentax. I suspect that is Autofocus and the P button. These point and shoot no VF using trendy customer base do not want to become bogged down learning about their camera's quirks in order to get it to focus appropriately or take a good picture... They don't want to learn about exposure, iso, shutter speed etc. they just want it to focus every time and take a good picture indoors without looking blurry. I hope Pentax learned from the K-5 release and has fixed its focusing issues and I also hope that the P mode takes advantage of the K5 sensor dynamic range and to take crisp blur free pictures in dark environments while being hand held a foot away from your face... think Ipad... people are willing to pay an arm and a leg for it not just because of design. It generally has almost ZERO compatibility issues and just works. It's customer base has come to love that even if it limits their options.

That P button better be magic!

There is certainly hope! Talk of a possible FF this year... new mirrorless, new KR and K5 model replacements...a new lens line up... at least the ship is moving. I for one am excited to see some new life breathed into Pentax and the K-mount specially... and I almost forgot... rehiring of previously let go Pentax lens designers too. Hurray.

That's exactly right. The distinguishing factor is this: The K-01 is not a smaller mirrorless DSLR. It is a point and shoot camera with a freakishly good sensor with the biggest lens line up available to date! ... And it's trendy.

To me it seems that without a viewfinder and other functions found in dslrs, the majority of photography enthusiasts who frequent this and other photography sites are dissappointed. The common complaint is: This is a neutered k5... only slightly smaller and too big for a mirrorless camera. I tend to agree. A Viewfinder or at least an articulating screen would be a must for a dslr user like myself. I'll wait for the k-02. But... this camera isn't for us. It's a new camera chasing a different segment: The young trendy person who takes pictures with the camera held at arms length. That's a huge market. 90% of my friends belong to this crowd. They're not interested in DSLRs and are intimidated by all the buttons and size. And they'll never bother buying an EVF hot shoe option either.

The K-01 is for the point and shooters who want the totally different design cool new toy that is not intimidating with all of it's dslr like buttons... that is small (with the 40mm lens), takes great movies and surprise... will take amazing pictures with the K5 sensor. Most will not care that it even has an exchangeable lens system. Hell... most people looking for good picture quality get that entry level dslr and never buy another lens other than the kit... This'll be an un-intimidating familiar entry into that kind of picture taking capacity in a colorful and hip design at a good price. I was contemplating what this camera's true competitors will be. I expect the k-01 will drop to the $600 range. It's competitors will be the Nikon p7100, fujifilm x10, x100, canon g1x, g12, nex5n, j1, gf3 etc. What's interesting... is that most of these camera's all look relatively the same... no design truly stands out among them... that is until the k-01.

I think this is a great move by Pentax. It's core K-01 buying audience will be young trend setters. The majority will never buy another lens other than the kit... the quality of pictures and video they take will be amazing. Some will get into more pentax lenses, specially those using its video capabilities. They'll be much more inclined to stay with the K-mount system after that. Those of us expecting the first camera in this mirrorless line to be a pro mirrorless camera should just wait until the line is expanded. I'm sure one will come down the line next year. I'm sad Pentax hasn't put out the camera I wanted but am glad they're reaching out for different market with an innovative new product. A stronger Ricoh/Pentax is a good thing in my book and only increases the chances for them to one day hopefully be a stronger presence in the photography business.... I'd be great to walk into my local BestBuy and actually see ANY Pentax cameras available for me to actually hand hold.

An EVF with focus assist technology in it would be even better. I'd love to try that out on my K lens collection. Split screens can make focusing better but it still can be a slow process if your eyesight is not too good. Plus... focus assist would do wonders for video while using manual focusing old glass.

I find the nex5 too small attached to half my K lens collection. It's cumbersome and I use the OVF 95% of the time. For the masses out there who don't though... if Pentax's goal is to gain market share.... a focus assist function would be necessary in my opinion.

Please god... let it be. EVF, K5 sensor, tons of K glass at its disposal, small without being a toy, well built and KR price point = WIN for Pentax!

a NEX5 like focus assist function is necessary in order to appeal to the 90% "non EVF using" new customer base out there.

These Italy shots are amazing. The third and 4th are my favorites. The long exposure of the water fountains give it a mystical look and the implied movement of the status and angels just add to that effect even more. Like you're sitting in the clouds looking at what goes on there.... The processing of the 4th is just awesome. Rich colors without looking cartoony. The night shots are great too!

Yeah. We got a rental and traveled the yucatan for two weeks. Getting to the ruins first thing and having them all to ourselves was definitely something special... Plus it made for great photos!
