CES Pentax K-1 Rumor or Fact?

The one I saw was not taped over and it is a beauty. I promised I will not let the cat out of the bag before it is time. The camera is a beast. It was a fully functioning camera and it is the best Pentax I have ever seen. Lots of goodies but can't talk about it. Get ready to be blown away by this beauty and from what I understand, we don't have to wait too long .

Production having started in September is a curiosity. I heard other things.

CES Pentax K-1 Rumor or Fact?

I went to my local dealer today and he was talking about what he saw last week at CES. There were a half dozen K-1s available for handling on dealer day. No batteries and the rear buttons were taped over. The K-1s had the new DFA lenses and he said, "they were obviously made by Tamron." That makes a lot of sense to have Tamron building the lenses while Pentax ramps up production on the K-1. He also said that the K-1 has been in series production since September so that there will be a good supply on hand when it's officially released. Ricoh is also actively working on starting up a factory warranty and repair facility because most dealers won't stock Pentax without one. Apparently Precision Repair has an exclusive contract for Pentax repair that runs out mid year.

I'm just passing it along so take it for what it's worth.

Pentax FF running out of steam

I've followed the Pentax FF news / announcements for more than a year. Until end of 2015, teasing was pretty effective, triggering a lot of activities on the thread. However, it now looks like some people who used to participate to FF threads don not participate anymore. Shall the Pentax FF be postponed half a year or more, I'd see a number of Pentaxians loosing interest. To me it seems that the Pentax FF teasing pumped up beyond maximum is kind of falling flat. Have some people given up already?

I don't think there's any doubt Nikon puts a lot more effort into their test images than Pentax does. Given that for folks like myself it's those images that are my only real impression. I still remember the library image that was posted with the D800. I was just blown away.

Here we are years later, pentax is finally releasing their D800, and honestly, these are images i wouldn't post here on the forum.

The suspension bridge image has OOF grass in front of parts of the bridge. The wild roses image has the background showing way too much detail, it just looks busy and the wide angle shot, come on, wait a bit until it's a sunset, and find someplace interesting to shoot. I try and do that every time I go out. They are unprofessional in so many ways, I could write pages.

The person who took these images is not a person who's standards are work I can appreciate. So what is the point of posting them? Would I buy a camera if I thought my images were going to look like those?

I'm left to think, I can take images I like with my K-3, hopefully the K-1 will be better. What else can I take from those images? 15 minutes from now I've forgotten them. The original D800 images, I'll never forget them.

The only thing I think when I see work like that is, people given a big job to do, and no money to do it with. I would expect to have better than those after a 2 hour walk through one of the park hiking trails.

Are they really that unaware? :D

Sorry about the smiley, it's not funny. It's depressing.

They should be images of a competent photographer who was planning to do a shoot anyway, and who could just take the new gear along. There should be the planning and care taken in a real photoshoot, location scouting, right time of day, proper lighting, the things real photographers do. None of those image qualify.

I found this part interesting:

I think it shows very clearly what the target market is for this camera.

Also this...

...seems to imply that there will be no unpleasant surprises when FA Limited owners put their babies on the new Pentax FF superbeast. Unfortunately this may disappoint those who wanted a camera "so good it would make the FA Limiteds look bad", but perhaps what it does mean is that what the FF does to images will not grind everything down into a mass of super-ultra-sharpness with no artistic quality.

Looking at this photo posted earlier here by Sportsgal501:

it's nice how compactly the rear LCD seems to fold up, despite all it's mechanics.

Considering that the display will probably spend 95% of it's life folded flat, I also hope they have been able to make the new display air-gapless, bright and use tempered glass too, just like the K-3 rear LCD.

---------- Post added 2015-10-24 at 01:47 PM ----------

FUD.

5K plus would just about put it into 645Z territory, which is absurd. My bet is D810 price, give or take.

Taking a step back, it's amazing to witness the energy and rabid excitement for this camera and the brand overall. In less than 24 hours, this thread has amassed hundreds of posts, over 40,000 views, and more "likes" than the vast majority of the threads of 2015. 24 hours!!

A lot of these "likes" seem to be just people riding the high and "liking" each other's comments because "omg you're so right! this is amazing, Pentax is amazing, WE'RE AMAZING TO BE A PART OF THIS! TAKE A LIKE!"

Just wanted to say that it's really cool to see such energy around here. You know, with all the impending doom and all.

Keep it up ;)

Opinion: that first shot of the top showed me everything I need to know in order to use this camera. This, IMO, is Pentax's strength - the beast is immediately usable and understandable without wading through the entire manual first. That "empty" control button/dial thingy is going to make life so easy for us, especially if the important information can be projected onto the OVF (which from the size of the pentaprism looks pretty likely). We are almost certainly in HOTAS territory here (aerospace talk, "Hands on Throttle and Stick" - in this context, everything you need to touch is under your fingertips and everything you need to look at is projected in front of you, so you can keep your hands on the camera and keep your eyes glued to the target and take your shot.)

I predict that either the shake-reduction mode or the as yet unmarked mode (white dot) will control the pixel shift.

I deduce from the crop control option that we will be able to override auto-crop if we wish to suffer the optical consequences (some people might like their pictures circular).

If 'grid' really does control an OVF overlay, things could get exciting.

I agree with thoughts so far expressed on the ISO mode button - the dial will allow you to set sophisticated selection modes/expanded sensitivity; the button is for rolling back and forth between ISOs when you need the dial for something else.

I think the metering (spot, centre, matrix) and AF point (single/multiple toggle) selectors are the buttons on the top back left under the mode dial. There is the possibility that the unmarked white dot on the right-hand menu knob could be configured for anything you want - including rotating through the AF points.

Anyone who gets a chance to handle this needs to ask them to take the lens off, so you can look inside the mount and see if the fondest dreams of the K/M lens crowd have been answered.

This camera is awesome. I suspect it's also going to be awesomely expensive, but so what? I think it's going to be that well-integrated package I was hoping for, and if the image quality is anywhere near as good as the control system, this is going to be a Canikon-killer. And if the control system makes its way down into APS-C land (K-1? KS-3?), it's going to knock some serious holes in that section of the market too.

And for the record... if I were a Nikon user, I would snap up the Df in a heartbeat.

Looking at the top plate, I guess the two wheel control will work like this:

Wheel 1. Select an option (EV, ISO, Ch/Cl, Bracket, HDR, Grid, SR, Crop, WiFi)
Wheel 2. Toggle through the options available for your selection in Wheel 1, with the options displayed on the top LCD.

Ch/Cl is Continuous High/ Continuous Low, in Nikon speak. Shooting mode.

Grid would be grid display options in the viewfinder. (Rule of Thirds, Square mesh etc)
Crop would be what crop mode to use (or not)
SR = SR On/Off/Panning mode?

Sony A7R or Pentax FF

I have the A7 and I've tried the A7r before.

My advise is :
1. Pentax FF is too near to release to ignore it at this point (basically wait and see what its got )
2. If you have AF lenses you'd like to use, the Pentax FF is the sure thing to get.
3. If you have mostly or lots of manual lenses, then the A7 is better in most cases.
4. Better photographic flow and thought out features/functions - Pentax

On point #4, I've mentioned it a few times here on this forums.
Sony's got the tech, but photographic use/flow wise, they don't seem to think it out as well.
a. Rigid bracketing options
b. Sensor reflections (esp A7)
c. Sensor stack thickness
d. Rigid timer release/bracketing options.
e. menu digging to get to remote, evf unlinked to settings (needed for strobing)

On the specifics of A7r, I'd not recommend it for the following reasons:
1. Shutter shake for some longer lenses
2. No electronic first curtain shutter resulting in a slow shutter reaction that makes it harder to do shots that involve moving ppl (eg. streets, kids)
3. Resolution plus thick sensor stack makes it very harsh on lenses (esp. wides) on the edges
4. High res is very tough on shooting discipline (I've seen enough slightly blurred samples at 100% even in good light due to poor shooting technique)

If you want to buy an A7 series, I'd suggest an A7 or A7II

Personally, at this point, I would just ask you to wait for the Pentax.

kerrowdown your bottle most likely contains some jack. Jack uses virgin barrels then sells them to Scottland distilleries. I am a poor man thus drinking sour mash Tennessee whiskey at the moment.
