Noise reduction not applied to JPEG's?

Hi,
When I take shoots on my camera (K5 + 18-55WR), I see the NR applied on the camera screen.
However, after I have downloaded the jpg files to my computer, it seems that the NR was not applied to the actual JPEG's.. only to the thumbnails...
How can I solve it? I'm sure it is something simple....

How to assess 55-300 specimen quality

Hi everybody,
Wow, that's a lot of data, I'm still trying to go over it, but first I will attach some photos.
Most of my photos are f/8, with long exposure times, and handheld (w/SR).

Squirrel, not happy with:

Swan, so-so:
http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr67/koraldon/photos/IMGP2717.jpg

Swan, now this one looks sharp:
http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr67/koraldon/photos/IMGP2677.jpg

Seagulls, short distance but still doesn't resolve well
http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr67/koraldon/photos/IMGP2538.jpg

Long distance buildings over the thames, doesn't resolve well
http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr67/koraldon/photos/IMGP2832.jpg

So let me know what do you think - Lens IQ not as it should be or I just need to improve. I have seen some of the samples here and around the web and to my eyes it seems like a different league.
I will say that I'm quite happy with the results from my FA50 and DA18-55WR.

p.s. okay, photobucket reduced the resolution, how / where can I upload full res?

How to assess 55-300 specimen quality

HI,
I have purchased a 55-300 DAL a few months ago, expecting to get the excellent IQ the different reviews here give it. The lens was new, but bought separate from bundle.
However, I have been somehwat disappointed with the sharpness of the lens, used in trips mainly in variety of appretures/ exposure times/etc.. (Body is k10d).
I know there might be some variance due to the manufacturing and wanted to ask what is a simple way to check that the lens quality I have is similar to other lenses ?
i.e. to photograph somthing using pre-defined setting, etc...

thanks in advance
daniel

Lens for a trip to Patagonia

Hi,
Thanks for all of the responses :-)

Regarding the 18-55, I have read some of the material here regarding its quality. I must say that in my photographs, I still didn't reach the point that its optics limit me (i.e. my ability is currently lesser than the lens quality :p).
I'm aware that the 16-45 has better IQ, but I selected the 18-55 for its WR. From what I have read patagonia is supposed to be rainy/windy so WR is very handy.

I'm would love to get the 18-135 WR and combine it with an UWA lens, but I fear that such a combination is probably near a grand - which I can't afford right now. Unless someone has a cheaper suggestion...
btw, for future knowledge, how is the 16-45 IQ compared to the 18-135?

So basically I want a WR lens for the weather, and a fast prime for the low-light (and better quality) - So I have the 18-55 and the 50 F/1.4.

I have place for one lens more, which is going to be one of the following:
- 28-200 sigma f/3.5-5.6, okay quality but bulky. Already own it.
- 50-200 WR pentax, has WR, but the same max. range as the sigma. Should it have better IQ than sigma?
- 55-300, no WR but gets rave reviews (is it better than 50-200 at the same range?) and has longer reach.
- UWA lens - are there affordable options?

Lens for a trip to Patagonia

Hi all,
I have recently purchased the K10D (used). I'm planning on going on a honeymoon next month to Patagonia, and planning to take the camera with me.

My current lens are:
18-55mm WR.
50mm FA F/1.4
and a 28-200 sigma f/3.5-5.6.

The quality of the sigma is not very good, the question should I get the 55-300 instead (or other lens) or is it not very important for a trip in patagonia which I understand is mostly scenes and not a lot of wildlife.

Thanks

p.s. I like scenes and wildlife photography.

Focus problem on FA50mm

Hi,
I have sent the lens to a service shop, they identified the problem with a malfunctioning (broken?) worm-gear of the auto-focus.
The fee they want for the fix is ~170USD, is it reasonable?

Thanks

Focus problem on FA50mm

Hi,
Well I have just got my first dSLR, a K10d, and on it went my old lenses, a FA-50mm and a Sigma 28-200.
While playing with them, I noticed that the AF on the 28-200 is pretty fast and accurate, but I didn't get any AF on the FA-50mm - just a small movement, some noise and it freezes.

After a short check this is what I found out:
1 - Without changing any settings on the body, the 28-200 Autofocuses without a hitch, however there is a problem with FA-50mm. So I assume the problem is not related to body .

2 - On manual focus mode the FA-50mm does recognize when it is focused (I see the green hexagon lights up and a red square blinking). So the body focus recognition is okay.

3 - When I try to focus with FA-50mm there is a short noise, less than a second but the focus doesn't budge. It is the same behavior whether the lens is at infinity and I point it an object 1 meter away, or whether the lens is at 0.8 meter focus and I point it at the same object.

4 - I tried to clean contacts, using soft eraser, it didn't help. the Mechanics on the back seem fine (i.e. no damage visible).

5 - It seems to me that when I manual focus the FA-50mm the friction is much higher compared to the 28-200.

6 - the focus ring center-line on the FA-50 is not aligned with the lens center-line, i.e. The space between the focus ring and the ring below it is not-uniform, varying from 0.5mm to roughly 2mm.
see attached images.

So I think that the problem is the increased friction / misalignment, however my experience in dSLR is nil, and the last time i used my film SLR was something like 10 years ago...
So I would be glad to hear your ideas / thoughts - maybe it is a common problem with a simple solution... and whether I can fix it in home or do I need to get it to a service shop.

Thanks
Daniel
