Two primes lenses for Pentax - 24mm and 100mm

I would like to suggest that Pentax produce a couple more prime lenses - especially if they are smaller and affordable. These would increase the desirability of the system, especially for APS-C shooters.

I suggest these lenses re-use existing optical designs for 24mm and 100mm that Pentax already has.

The physical design could be plastic, like the existing DA 35mm f/2.4 and DA 50mm f/2.8. These two new lenses would complete the affordable DA prime lens lineup. Alternately, the physical design could be updated to match the HD Pentax-FA 35mm f2 and the HD Pentax-FA 50mm f1.4. These two new lenses would also complete this mid-priced lens lineup. The plastic DA prime lens series are a great choice for APS-C shooters, and a nice budget option for FF shooters. The HD FA design is still small but gives a nice build quality at a good price.

In both cases, preserving the full-frame image circle (like with the plastic DA lenses) will broaden the appeal for K-1 shooters as well.

The smaller lens size of either the plastic DA or metal HD FA designs appeals to prime lens shooters, who carry more than one lens or don't want a heavy and imposing lens for street photography or landscape hiking.

24mm f/2.8
APS-C shooters are missing a lens between the DA 21mm and DA 35mm. The 24mm length is desirable because it replicates the classic field of view of a 35mm lens on full frame.
Full frame shooters are missing a lens between new D FA 21mm and FA 31mm. In the mid-priced HD FA series, there is nothing wider than 35mm.

100mm f/2.8
APS-C shooters are missing a lens longer than the DA 70mm. There is not a good option for shooting portraits with a reasonably priced lens. Full frame shooters, or APS-C shooters spending more, only have the FA 77mm and the D FA 85mm. Both lenses are expensive, and there is nothing longer than 85mm. 100mm is a good portrait length on both APS-C (equivalent 150mm) and full frame (the classic 105mm). Also - the D FA 100mm f2.8 Macro is not suitable for portraits. The long throw of the focus ring and close focusing means that the lens is slow to focus for portraits. Pentax shooters need a moderately priced 100mm or 105mm lens that will focus quickly.

K-01 - why did it not suceed?

Ironically, the K-01 ended up being the best camera for video ever fielded by Pentax. That's what I often use it for today. Optical image stabilization during video, HD recording, access to Pentax lenses.... all very good things.

I bought one when the price came down from launch, and LOVED the clarity boost over my K5, because they removed the anti-aliasing filter. I used it for landscape with manual focus lenses. Then I pressed it into service for video and found it was excellent and all I needed for HD video.

I know it would make the traditionalists cringe, but Pentax could have a winner with a followup camera. Today that would mean:
- More traditional body, SLR shaped, with eye-level EVF
- 4K res video
- "hybrid" AF

None of this is exotic anymore, it's off-the-shelf and available on modestly priced competitors.

Two primes lenses for Pentax - 24mm and 100mm

I'm not hampered either - one look in my camera closet says so. (My wife really says so.) Yes I would like, buy and use my proposed 24mm and 100mm. You wouldn't. That's fine.

But -- from the perspective of a new buyer, looking for a reasonably complete lens line at a reasonable price point? Pentax is incomplete at best, and at worst looks like the lens lineup was developed while drunk.

Someone looking at buying into Pentax, especially entry level APS-C, sees a 35mm and a 50mm that they can afford. Nothing wider, nothing longer, in that price point. The HD FA lenses are vestigial from a bigger selection of lenses at that price point, and the plastic DA are a great start into an entry-level set of lenses. Completing either the plastic DA or the HD FA lineup with a couple more primes would be especially aimed at volume selling. Good price, ok quality, a modestly complete range of focal lengths. Hardly radical. Especially when Pentax has these optical formulas already developed.

Would love a full-frame Pentax KP

I have both a Pentax K-1 and a Pentax KP.

When I pick up my Pentax K-1, I always wish it was the KP in my hands. When I pick up my KP, I wish it had a full-frame sensor.

The Pentax KP is hands-down my favourite Pentax camera I have ever owned. The slimmer design is so comfortable. I love the customizable grips. (I settled on the middle size, which feels a lot like the awesome MZ-S grip.) The tilt screen is perfect for me -- I don't find any advantage in the K-1's moon-lander tilt screen. When I test drove the (mirrorless) Olympus EM-5 Mk III against the KP, I found the KP to be very similar in size and handling, while still providing a nice SLR viewfinder and K-mount lenses. Live view is snappy too, negating some of the appeal of mirrorless cameras.

The K-1 is a lovely camera, capable of stunning image quality. I just find it heavy in the hand, and less well suited to smaller prime lenses like the Limiteds.

I wish the KP design could be used for a full-frame sensor. Given the same requirements for flange focal distance and K-mount ring, surely a full frame sensor could be wedged into a KP body (or something close.)

I’m hoping a “classic” edition will get the metal-manual-look treatment (and an aperture ring).

Similar to Nikon’s classic looking “SE” lenses (28mm and 40mm) but full-frame and with aperture ring.

They mention a compact camera, auto to help the kids, but manual wind because they like the feeling.

I think that misses the biggest part of the market.

The used market (that they talk about a lot) is driven by cameras in the Pentax K1000 / Pentax K2 / Nikon FM / Nikon FE style. If they make a decent K-mount SLR with an A setting on the shutter speed and allowing the use of all K / M / A / FA lenses, they will have a huge hit that will sell for years. Everyone else has stopped making these (even Cosina). The used prices are climbing and buying used is always a risk for someone who just wants a camera that works (kids, students, new hobbyists.)

Here’s my best argument against this lens. (Or the argument I use with myself!)

It doesn’t have an aperture ring, so I can’t use it with my Pentax LX.

Seriously! If it had an aperture ring, I would have succumbed already, and it would be a perfect fourth member to join the original Limited lens team.

The FA 31 would be an excellent choice on crop.

But - before I was able to save up for an FA 31, the lens I used most on APS-C for single-lens duty was the Sigma 30mm f1.4 EX DC.

This lens can be had reasonably cheap, because it get's judged harshly for being soft in the corners wide open. But the overall rendering is fantastic, f1.4 means it's a true low light prime. Shooting wide open the DOF is so thin that the corners will be out of focus anyway(!). It sharpens up just fine by stopping down. If you are wanting to explore this focal length, at a reasonable price, I would seriously consider this lens.

I've since taken a gamble and added an MZ-5n and and MZ-3 to the stable. So far all three cameras are still working well.

But I have ordered some replacement gears from that custom machine shop, just in case I need them one day. Too bad parts from Pentax aren't available.

I think I'm in love - the Pentax K2

I've been on a journey through SLRs over the last few years. It all starts with my black Spotmatic F. It was my Dad's, and it's been mine for decades. It's a handsome beast, with a history. It was a photojournalist's camera and saw time in the Vietnam war. For me, it defines what an SLR should look like and feel like.

Unfortunately, the F sometimes get's finicky -- the meter doesn't come to life reliably. Plus, it's not the world's most responsive meter. The needle is always a little sluggish. Plus there is no actual information displayed in the viewfinder... just a needle that wanders up and down indicating over and under exposure. The mirror is a little dark too, making slow lenses tough to use. Of course, K-mount lenses start to pile up as I bought into Pentax DSLRs as well.

My journey has really been to find an SLR that gives me the Spotmatic F experience, but fixes the things I wasn't crazy about. It's a journey that even took me into Nikon-land. After all, when I came of age, photographic books and education emphasized that the REAL king of the hill was the Nikon F3.

In order of exploration, my journey took me through manual focus SLRs:
(God bless the rise of digital; this was a cheap journey and I could sell everything for what I paid.)
  • Nikon F3HP -- an amazingly built camera with the best viewfinder I've ever experienced. But flash sync was just as slow as the Spotmatic. And no Pentax lenses!

  • Nikon FM2n -- I fixed the flash sync problem with an FM2n. Seriously good camera, and 1/250th is as good as it gets. It's the right size camera too. But somehow it felt flimsy. Not solid like the Spottie or the F3HP. Lack of Pentax lenses killed this one too.

  • Contax 159 MM -- I decided to try out the legendary Contax line. I was encouraged by having adapters for M42 lenses (yay!) Handsome camera, but the build quality was definitely plastic. Didn't fall in love, so this one went out too.

  • Pentax Program Plus -- available in black, just like my Spotmatic F. Never fell in love with the push-button shutter speeds though. Build quality was good, but not great. Probably similar to the FM2n. Gone.

  • Pentax P3n -- an ugly camera, but really solid. Electronics are rock solid, the viewfinder display is good. Metal shutter is reliable, flash sync is reasonable. Wish I could set my own ISO, especially now that I develop my own film. Keeping this one.

  • Pentax MG, MV -- nice solid little cameras for aperture priority use. A bit small, and limiting. Gone.

  • Pentax MX -- I really wanted to like this little guy. Many people's favourite SLR. Sturdy and simple LED metering, but I wished it covered more range and was easier to read in daylight. Hated adjusting shutter speeds, because the controls were jammed together -- too small. Gone.

  • Pentax KX -- getting closer. Right size, right feel, but a little bit plasticky with the trim and judas window. Good viewfinder display. Silver though... and not in great shape. Gone.

  • Pentax LX -- I went through two of these. The first one was essentially mint. I found I didn't want to carry it because it was too pristine. I also wished the sync speed was a little higher. Sold the first one, and missed it. The viewfinder is great, the best of the Pentaxen. Bought a second one, in "user" condition, and this one gets lots of use. But somehow... the proportions aren't quite right. And it's got a lot of plastic on it compared to the Spotmatic F. I'm keeping the LX, just not loving it with all my heart.

And finally the Pentax K2. Wow. It's like the friendly girl from high school who comes home from college looking great. All the awkwardness and flaws of the Spotmatic F have been smooth out. The viewfinder display is perfect. The shutter sounds great, sync speed is good. Aperture priority automatic is very accurate, and easy to use, just like the LX. It takes readily available (cheap) batteries, and it even had a handy battery check light. It's a black K2, just as handsome as my Spotmatic F.

This example is in user condition, not bad. It's got a bit of funky smell, so I've ordered a new set of camera leathers and the whole thing will get a thorough cleaning. It will be a labour of love. :)

Thanks for sharing.

Your experience with the XE2 matches my experience dabbling with an XE1. Very fun camera, capable of lovely OOC images, but I was quite disappointed when using adapted glass. Even lenses I love on Pentax (the Limiteds) were’t very good on the Fuji. But I was unwilling to buy a lot of Fuji lenses and run two systems, so the Fuji left and I kept the Pentax gear.

I’ve always dabbled in other brands. Buying used and selling them for what I paid, has given me a moderated perspective on Pentax - your post reminds me of that.

Pentax is rarely as “desperately far behind” as some internet wonks would like you to believe. And in so many important ways (image quality, handling, build quality, lens choices) Pentax offers more than any other camera maker. It’s why I’m still here.

KP size - is it really smaller ?

I went to the store and handled a KP to answer this question for myself.

Honestly, the KP is essentially the same size as the K5 -- but with the big grip shorn off the K5. Handling and seeing the KP in real life, you recognize how much of the KP actually directly carries over from the K7-->K3 body style.

I do think it makes for a "subjectively" smaller camera in the hand, But the K7-->K3 body style was always "compact" and "dense" compared to the blobby empty plastic cameras from Nikon and Canon. So the "compactness" of the KP vs the K5 is already part of the DNA.

There's lots of fun to be had with the classic M 40mm, but I was never really happy with it (on film.) Mine showed a lack of contrast, and was hard to focus with that little focus ring (and a slower open aperture of f/2.8).

But I love the 40ish field of view, so I splurged on a used FA 43mm when one came up.

I simply love it -- it's a good deal sharper than the 40mm, it has lovely microcontrast that makes black & white images sparkle, and being autofocus (with a brighter maximum aperture) makes focusing easy to do and easy to see where the focal point is. I recommend the FA 43mm wholeheartedly.

Congrats on the K-1. I'm looking forward to eventually getting one.

You folks are hilarious. Feel free to ignore if you don't want to play along.

The last thing I want Pentax to waste their limited resources on is a web platform to compete with existing giants (Instagram etc.)

As for Instagram, I don't "waste" a single moment on it. I have an account, and I use it to post a handful of my favourite images (all of which are either Pentax DSLR or film-based). I treat Instagram like a free gallery service that lets people around the world easily find my work -- compared to my web-based gallery which is such a quiet corner of the internet that it may as well not exist. Every time someone "likes" one of my images, I check out what they have posted themselves. With few exceptions, I see excellent work that nourishes my artistic interests. I've spent a total of a few hours over the last few years on Instagram. It has been a worthwhile exchange for whatever lost "privacy" I have given up to use it.

I am well aware of the drawbacks of social media. But don't kid yourself -- your indignation sounds like your great-grand-parent's complaints about how "I don't want a newfangled telephone in my house! How dare they have a telephone-based contest! What's wrong with writing a letter?! Kids these days have terrible penmanship!" All of these points may be valid. There are benefits to staying "off the grid." But it starts to sound like wanton anachronism to everybody else.

I have lots of photographic training, and an undergraduate degree in film studies with a focus on production. But two books had the biggest influence on me since then. One for when I am shooting -- the other for when I am completing the photograph (editing, printing.) Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure, and Tim Rudman's The Photographer's Master Printing Course.

Already mentioned is Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure. This slim book has the rare ability to be simple, straightforward, and nicely illustrated from the author's own photos -- but to be grounded in excellent technique, and full of wisdom. Some books wow you with the photography but have no actionable insight. Some books have great technical information but the photography is underwhelming. Brian's book succeeds in bringing to life the technical choices that inform artistic choice. He inspires you to take what you've learned and go out shooting -- but not slavishly to recreate his photos. That's the sign of a great teacher.

Tim's book was my introduction to a particular school of British photography that was tangentially familiar to me from reading Black + White Photography Magazine. This book shows Tim's original negatives (or flat prints) and then walks through the process that yields his incredible prints. Tim's book inspired me to stop looking at photographs as slavish recreations of reality (which has been dominant in North American photography since Ansel Adams, Group f/64, etc.) I felt freed to find the "inner" light and to shape the tones of my photos to much more directly control the final print. The result are photographs much more like what I witnessed "in my mind" and less reliant on the vagaries of luck and timing.

Sony squatting on Pentax.ca

Why is Sony squatting on a Pentax website?

I live in Canada. I have often gone to the Pentax Canada website by directly typing w w w . p e n t a x . c a into the URL address bar. Regardless of the actual path to the site (currently Welcome?RICOH IMAGING CANADA), this has always worked, redirecting me where I want to go.This is standard practice for big companies with international presence and nation-specific web sites.

But I just typed w w w . p e n t a x . c a and was redirected to the SONY camera site. (Cameras | Best Digital Cameras & Lenses | Sony CA)

SONY are squatting on a long-standing Pentax domain. This is not cool in two ways:

1) Ricoh / Pentax how could you let this domain lapse?!?!
2) Sony, squatting like this is very misleading. I like you FAR LESS when you pull tricks like this.

The real truth on the MZ-S mirror motor gear?
Posted By filmamigo
Replies: 59

I've had two MZ-S and I've sold both because of fear of eventual demise of a very expensive (to me) camera.

The "melting" issue in the MZ-S rang a bell, but not for the mirror gear. The only issue I experienced was with the weather sealing rings on the big control dials. My first MZ-S became almost impossible to adjust -- a trip to the local repair shop showed that the rubber rings had melted and were jamming the works. The shop cleaned out the rubber and it worked perfectly. So long as I was OK with not having weather sealing on those dials, it was great. My second MZ-S was a bit grabby on the dials but not as bad as the first, so I didn't have it cleaned out.

Of course in the mean time I've added an MZ-5n and MZ-3 to the collection. So far the MZ-3 is still going but the MZ-5n packed it in this summer. I ordered 2 custom replacement gears in brass in case I ever decide to have one of these cameras fixed. So maybe it's time to embrace the MZ-S, knowing that I have a gear in stock if it should ever fail?

Everyone asking for a Pentax K3 III reminds me of all the crying made by Nikonians waiting for a successor to the D300s. The D500 eventually came but it took SEVEN years.

It was clear that:

1) Nikon considered "serious" use of the APS-C/DX format to be dead - full frame was the real deal
2) The market agreed, as most sales were of entry-level APS-C, and pro sales moving almost entirely to full frame
3) The niche who wanted a "flagship DX" camera were small but vocal. They have real reason to want it, but they are in a really small minority, dedicated to birds-in-flight and similar small subsets of photography.

I bet Pentax sees the same thing. Now that most of the pro/serious market is served by the K1, and they offer VERY good entry level and mid-level APS cameras, the number of purchasers for a "flagship" APS-C camera has to be vanishingly small.

(My position is also coloured by having recently handled a KP. With a few tiny quibbles, this camera is "flagship quality." It clearly has 80% DNA from the K7/K5/K3 line.)

The parallels are accurate, differing only in how fervently Nikon and Pentax insist that the D7xxx and KP are the top of the APS-C line.

D300/s users held their breath for seven years, stamping their feet and demanding a camera. That they finally got one after seven years seems like a mini miracle and more of a good will gesture from Nikon. I would love to see sales figures for the D500 and the D750 and D610. The number of people buying a D500 have to be vanishingly small when they could buy a full frame camera for the same price or less. Especially when Best Buy has the D610 and D750 on the shelves - I've never seen a D500 there.

I think both Pentax and Nikon have been surprised that every advanced amateur didn't quietly move en masse to full frame. But for all the people loudly asking for a flagship APS-C ... how many will actually buy an 1800+ US dollar APS-C camera?

[Shrug]

Nope. The K-1 and KP look great, and look like a Pentax. Line up a Spotmatic, a K2, an LX, and the very well-liked 50th Anniverary K20D. Now put the real icon of Pentax pro cameras beside them -- the Pentax 67. The K-1 and KP all look like they belong to the same family.

As for the slightly innovative controls of the K-1 and KP? Pentax also has been willing in the past to experiment with controls. They led the marketplace to the dual-control-wheel design with the P-Z1p, but that didn't stop them from continuing to explore new ideas with the MZ-S -- still one of the most elegant modern camera control setups, and perfectly suited for digital cameras. The extra dials on the K-1 and KP are in line with other Pentax innovations, and answer some of the different ideas floating around. Want a more "retro" experience with a dedicated knob for ISO or exposure comp (like a Fuji X or Nikon Df)? You've got it with the K-1 or KP. But the extra controls on the K-1 and KP are more fleixble, because the functions are selectable -- very much like the MZ-S.

I hope Pentax keeps the design language of the K-1 and KP for a long time. It's distinctive, works well, and suits both modern (control wheel) shooters and traditionalists (who like dedicated knobs.)

Mee and Twilhelm, I agree completely.

I'm not surprised by any delay here. Pentax is not a behemoth, with tons of resources to throw at the wall. The K1 is a solid DSLR that should serve well for a large percentage of users who would be in the market for a K3 III+ class APS-C SLR camera.

Pentax must be scratching their head, watching the rest of the world and marketplace shift around them.

High volume consumers are vanishing, increasingly happy with the camera in their iPhone 6/7/8/10 (which frankly are darn good.) Judging by the questions I answer at work (where folks always ask me for camera advice) there is less and less interest in carrying a DSLR system. Many people bought one, and either have no need to upgrade, or they realized they never bring their DSLR anywhere because of size and weight.

Meanwhile, pros and dedicated amateurs are warming to mirrorless, lead there by the pro mirrorless cameras offered by Hasselblad, Fuji and Sony. Pentax is left with SLR-based MF digital and full-frame 35mm digital that suddenly look outdated and clunky.

Yes, there are times you want an optical finder of a DSLR -- birding and high speed sports. But I don't personally know anyone who shoots those, and judging by Flickr the majority of folks shoot landscapes or slow-moving people (portraits.) For this majority, there are real advantages to mirrorless, and the DSLR architecture starts to look clunky and rube-goldbergian.

As a manufacturer (whether it's Pentax or Nikon) you have to look at Sony and Fuji and Hassy and think .... here's a way to make desirable cameras that cost less to engineer, manufacture and support, and/or offer a better profit margin.

If Pentax (and Nikon) aren't having these thoughts, then I worry about them still being here in ten years time.

The move to mirrorless is inevitable. It's like the move from viewfinder/rangefinder cameras to SLR cameras in the 60's. The rational drivers are too strong to resist for most of the market and manufacturers. Those with a valid reason to prefer the older technology will continue to be served, but likely only by one manufacturer who stakes claim to the legacy form. With rangefinders it was Leica. With SLRs ... who knows. But do Pentax or Nikon really want to become even more of a niche brand? Especially as they don't have the Veblen glow of Leica?

Therefore any thought of the Pentax K3 II successor being mirrorless is music to my ears.
