I nominate this photo. I thought this contest was for pics that make you say "wow"! Not just for a good shot... This is unusual and something you don't see everyday. Anyone can learn to take a good photo but it takes luck to capture it at the right moment. Well done!

Have you ever seen a cow do this? This is my "WOW!" photo selection for the K3 contest :)
This crazy bovine was at a cattle ranch in Santa Barbara, CA, around October 2010--after spotting him while driving past the barn on a little wine tour in Solvang, I noticed he was spazzing like crazy! Pulling over and getting out my Pentax K7 (sorry dont remember the lens for this one), I noticed he was actually scratching his rib cage with his rear leg, not unlike a dog. This only lasted about 4 seconds, but just long enough to snap one shot off (so lucky I already had my camera on, lens cap off, and ready to go!).
Anyways, I picked this shot for the contest mainly because I've never seen a cow do this, and it certainly screams "WOW!" Also, I am in desperate need of a new camera and cant afford to buy one--I've been without a camera for almost a year and I've really been missing out on capturing moments like this...
Hope you love it, I sure do!!

i also see a great light source hitting the back of the cat, you can see a bit on the paw... try incorporating that in the next shot, really use it to your advantage to get that "pop", better colors, more depth, and whatnot. use it to backlight the ears, to hit the side of the face, illuminate the whiskars, something interesting, etc...
needs some basic work (see the whole pic when shooting, the bottom leg is cut off and looks a bit awkward, distracting cords in the background could be cleared) but at least you have a great fun subject for shooting!
Use the light!

Pretty much agree with the above critique--love the first shot! is the image flipped on its side? or is just a sticky leaf? regardless, love the comp.
the second one you really express great color and contrast, but i think you could have exploited it a bit more. i know you wanted to get the bench/table in the lower right, but i feel with teh mossy covered branches and the red and yellow leaves contrasting it behind, i feel the shot could have been a bit tighter and focused more on the vibrant colors and contrast, versus "getting the whole shot" which included a lot of browns, dead leaves, and duller colors.
beautful shots, the second one is great too, but its one of those shots where you say, "wish i was there" so you could get it just the way you'd like to see it ;)

Hey there, got some great shots! i will save my personal insight and reasons behind why i chose the following shots, other than that they were the shots that jumped out at me and made me take a closer, more thoughtful look. some just looked rad, while others were interesting in colors and textures. good stuff, and good luck with your review--sounds like it will be very fun and inspiring!
In no particular order:
17. Spider on stripes
19. Red walkway, centered
28. Religous through broken glass
30. Random scraps on red ground
34. Sepia windowed room
42. Red palm, gray sky
The last two light trails were pretty interesting as well, maybe throw in #45 too ;)

Hey there,
I would suggest that since your needs are pretty limited, you could go with any of the entry- mid level dslrs or mirrorless cameras. Pretty much all of them have decent video, fair resolution and image quality, and have the manual options you are looking for (so long you get one with a changeable lens... Dont get a fixed lense with a fixed zoom).
I used to shoot on the Canon EOS but only had two hand-me-down lenses--once Pentax began releasing dslrs i decided to sell my 40D and go Pentax to go along with all my pentax lenses from my film days. I have been happy since :)
So, go out to a shop and handle a few, and really just go with what is in your price range and what feels comfortable. As someone new to photography, I dont think you should stress this choice too much. Canon and Nikon already have an extensive offering of cameras and upgrade options for when you are ready to get more serious, and Pentax isnt far behind them. Only cameras I would steer away from are the 4/3 sensors, and it appears that Olympus will be discontinuing those soon anyhow...
Good luck with the search, and have fun! In this day of digital photography, and with the prices steadily decreasing, you really cant go wrong with any choice.
Sorry this response isnt very "technical", but I dont think it needs to be a very techinical decision for you. Hope this helps!
