Check new fuji lenses 23/2.0 and 35/2.0. They are small, lightweight, wr, fast focusing and not so expensive. You can also get good price on x-t1 now. I am happy owner of x-t1 for two years and it's really joy to use.

I came back to this forum after several months. Interesting reading.
I can say as a user of both DSLR and mirrorless, that main advantage of MILC is not the size of the camera but AF (reliability, accuracy, coverage of AF points) and WYSIWYG. There will be people who never accept EVF but there will be less and less. The size and weight of the MILC system (at least with wide and normal focal length) are, of course, pleasant.
AF speed difference between DSLR and MILC disappears for both single and continuous AF. A big game changer will be the global shutter, coming in ca 2018. It will have an impact on flash sync speed and faster image analysis for better continuous AF.

So what will remain as main differences between DSLR and MILC? The mirror and power consumption. Is it enough?
I don‘t think that Pentax will introduce new MILC mount for (APSC or FF) with a whole new line of lenses. Q, K and 645 are simply too much. Pentax (is) was an excellent lens producer, but when you look at a number of new lenses in recent years, it’s simply not enough for a new mount.
I believe, that MILC becomes mainstream. I can imagine that Pentax brings K mount MILC but flange distance will always influence its form factor. 645 MILC with its ca 70mm flange distance would be already strange...

Yes, XF50-140mmF2.8 is surprisingly large and heavy, even compared to equivalent Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS.
Nothing is perfect...

Reason is clear:
DA50-135: 18 elements in 14 groups inc. 3 ED elements
XF50-140: 23 elements in 16 groups, inc. 6 ED lens elements

I was very happy with my DA50-135, just a bit unsure AF on 135mm, but if it gets quicker SDM once, it would be excellent lens.

I will buy XF50-140mmF2.8 and I am curious on AF speed and quality.

Really interesting view on photography :-) We should start to use new unit, called "gram/apperture" :-)

Well, this thread starts to be a Fuji one, right?
Allow me then some more notes since I am previous K3 and current X-T1 user.

1) Lenses
Fuji does not have such a long history of the Xmount. But 12 lenses in two years is quite impressive. Sure, there are still some FL missing, specifically long teles.
If you look on their roadmap (which is btw realised in time) you see that there are two lines of primes, beside zooms.

bigger lenses, larger apperture: 16/1.4 (2015), 23/1.4, 35/1.4 and 56/1.2
more compact lenses, smaller apperture: 14/2.8, 18/2, 27/2.8, 60/2.4 and 90/2 (2015)
So you have the freedom to choise your quality/compactness/price.

They also have "economic" XC zoom line, but with ED elements, optical stabilisation and WR
I also owned 21/3.2 and liked it. But 23/1.4 is absolutely amazing. It opens me new possibilities how I can express reality on a picture. Well, 1.4 lenses are simply more expensive. That's life. I would pay the same price to Pentax with pleasure, if such lens exists.

2) Sensor
You can study tests or you can make pictures. I prefere the second option. Then you realise, that the sensor is simply good enough up to iso 3200, without need of corrections in RAW developer. I prefer somehow 16Mpx of X-T1 (and K5II) more than 24Mpx of K3, which requires certain shooting discipline. Although results from K3, if well exposed, are excellent.

3) RAW
The fact is, that Lightroom is not the best tool for fuji RAW. But you can use Ninja plugin in LR and it gives very good results. I did not shoot in JPG with K3 at all. Now I still evaluate X-T1 and shoot both JPG and RAW. For the first time in my photo experience are JPGs good enough that I sometimes don't bother with developing RAW.
DR is btw 13.1EV compared to K3's 13.4 EV (according to imaging resource), just for test lovers.

4) Shooting experience
That is actually main reason (beside lenses) why I moved to X-T1. It is very much connected with MILC generally. As I already wrote, I changed completely my style of shooting. You expose with DSLR and check, if the result suits your intention and is well focused. With MILC you see directly the light mood of the picture. And it's sharp, thanks to contrast focusing. I have some friends, who own DA55, nice lens with character. Some of them are really unhappy with focusing issues. The same happens with Sigma 18-35, which is also fast lens. So my guess is, that Pentax AF module has to be more optimalised for fast lenses (AF strip length). MILC bring generally big advantage here.
Anyhow, X-T1 is not perfect. It has only 9 phase detection points, which speed up focusing (OMD EM1 has more and is quicker).

5) Viewfinder
Try it. No other words are needed. It is TV, but very good one :-)

6) FA31, 43 and 77
I still own FA77 and use it on X-T1. Thanks to focus peaking and electronic loupe in viewfinder I am able to focus precisely (well, not children and other quick moving elements...). Fuji has another jewel, XF56. XF35 is also a nice lens.

I am not sure, if X-T1 is just second system for DSLR owner. Investment into good lenses for both MILC and DSLR are already high. Street, portrait and even wedding are areas where X-T1 gives you good service. If I would consider purchase of X-T1 and D750 , I would buy X-T1 again. D750 gives you better quality, AF is probably amazing but X-T1 is (for me) more joy.

I understand that this is Pentax forum, so my X-T1 adoration does not remain without response :-)
Take me as an example of somebody, who likes Pentax, owns Pentax LX and 6x7, but is not resistant to nice products of different producer.
I am 100% sure, that if X-T1 would be a Pentax product, it would be celebrated on this forum intensively.

I do not want to present some general truth. I liked my K3 and made many pictures, with which I was 100% satisfied. XT1 was for me simply love at first sight.

I wanted to point out that MILC (not only fuji XT1 but also sony A7 and olympus EM1) reached certain breakpoint. The fact, that some people sell their top FF equipment and move to APSC was a big surprise for me. It is completely different case to scenario, when FF owner buys light APSC MILC as a walk around camera. I see that as a big change, which will further continue.

I still wish Pentax success. I just think that MF MILC is something what would attract attention and could be better business for Pentax than FF.

Well, I like the look of XT1, much better than some other designs, like K-S1. Old school probably.
Instead of Leica club I had a feeling of joining Pentax Limited Lens Club, but with much larger apertures...
Regarding technology - I would say, that MILC generally offer very interesting features, like direct 100%crop view of focused detail. If you have it you love it. Or manual focus support, either digital loupe or split screen. It's quite comfortable to shoot with FA77 e.g. There are some features missing, like strong HDR bracketing - can live with that.

There are many people selling their 5DmkIII or D800x and moving to fuji. I really don´t care about sensor, fudging ISO results etc. Not only results are good but also the way how you reach them is simply more joy. K3 is a nice camera, but I was used to control almost every image on the LCD, if it is sharp and well exposed. I do it quite rarely with XT1 because AF is very reliable.

I understand that so many Pentax fans would like to use their FA ltd. on Pentax full frame camera.
The questions are:
1) Should that be DSLR ?
2) Should that be 24x36mm or something more?
3) Does Pentax has enough resources to keep top position in APSC, FF and MF ?

I owned K7, K5 and K3 before I moved to Fuji XT1. So I can compare well. I always wished that Pentax makes digital version of the LX. Fuji made it.
All I have to say after ca 2 months is, that shooting with XT1 is more straightforward and more joy. I do not care about ISO at all, just set aperture and compensation. What I see I also get, thanks to mirrorless WYSIWYG.
AF is about the same speed compared to K3, if you use middle AF points area, where PDAF points work. Otherwise, CDAF is much more accurate than K3's PDAF. I always prefer accuracy over speed.
XT1 body is ca half of weight of K3. My hands are not big, but I understand that it could be a problem for somebody to access small buttons.
I was a big opponent of EVF. However, XT1's EVF is something amazing. Magnification (the best on the DSLR market, inc. full frame) is a joy for 40+. If you look then into K3 OVF, you have a feeling that you look in the opposite side of the telescope.
Well, lenses were the main reason to move. There is something strange with the Pentax today’s focus and target group definition. I liked my 21/3.2 but wished more speed. It is a classical focal length and that is simply missing at Pentax. Fuji XF23/1.4 is nice lens in "limited" quality (as many others, specifically XF56/1.2).
IBIS is probably not missing, since I see no motion blur. There is normally light enough with these lenses and shutter speeds above 1/30 are ok. Some Fuji zooms have lens stabilisation, ca 4EV.
And finally, there is also big difference in communication to users. Fuji says clearly, that full frame is NOT their focus and people still buy them. They have clear lens roadmap which they perform in time. I also appreciate new functionality in firmware upgrade, based on user feedback (electronic shutter up to 1/32000 e.g.) for camera, which is already 9 months on the market.

Anyway, I keep and still love my Pentax LX and 6x7.

Pentax 645Z Officially Announced

I give you three examples, when I used equivalence recently:

1) One friend asked me for help to select a light pocket camera, <800USD, with good image quality and without typical compact's huge DoF.
I selected three candidates: LX7, RX100II and GM1.
But how to compare three different sensors: 1/1.7", 1″, 4/3
and three different lenses: 4.7-17.7mm/f1.4-2.3, 10.4-37.1mm/f1.8-4.9 and 12-32mm/f3.4-5.6 ?
And also their ISO ranges...
Results were quite interesting.
I really don't know, how I would evaluate it without the equivalence math. Few shots in the store don't help much.

2) I bought Pentax 6x7 last winter. Sometimes I look at eBay and buy 6x7 lens. Without equivalence math I would have no idea what is 6x7 75mm/f4.5, e.g.

3) I was considering full frame few months ago. I missed fast 35mm lens (full frame equivalent) from Pentax. But then came Sigma with their 18-35/1.8 and maybe also 24mm/1.4. So I decided to continue with K line and bought K3.

I understand, that some people don't understand equivalence or simply don't need it. It's their full right. I just want to say that sometimes is this math useful. And it is completely unimportant what you choose as reference. It can be APSC or Q7 or whatever else.

Although I have to agree, that comparing formats with different ratios, like 6x7 and 35mm, is not exact (I use diagonals in this case), it's still interesting to have rough comparison of equivalence. Working distance must be identical because of the same perspective. And then is equivalence, if correctly applied on focal lenght, aperture and ISO, valid.

But back to pictures, here are two from Venedig carnival.

I bought Pentax 6x7 one year ago. I had neither MF scanner nor dark room that time.
I did'n want to invest 2000 USD in Nikon Coolscan 9000 or more average Epson V750. I decided to try macro method, inspired by:

How to scan films using a digital camera | | Addicted2light Addicted2light

I modified it to K3+macro rings 32mm + M50/4 macro + filter reduction ring + extension tube (part of the waste pipe) + 12w LED panel
The magnification is almost 1:1, so one 6x7 negative consists of 8 APSC photos (matrix of 2 columns x 4 rows), which are merged in SW. K3 focus peaking makes focusing on film corn very accurate. The setup (excluding camera) can be seen here:

Extension tube keeps the lens to film distance constant and helps to keep film flat.

One horizontal merged pair:

PROS:
Low costs. Macro rings and lens are ca 150usd; the rest is almost nothing. I also tested A50/1.4 and was not bad.
Resolution. You decide, what resolution you want. With ca 1:1 macro you get final resolution of ca 11400x9000 px and 300MB file.
Scan quality. The scan quality is comparable to Nikon CoolScan 8000.
EDIT: LED panel. It enables to focus properly. I tried flash as well, but LED panel is better, you need permanent light for focusing

CONS
Less comfort. It does not take a long time to make 8 photos, but merging is an additional work.

This new Pentax replicator would be interesting, if also enables easy and quick multiple macro shooting of the negative. Otherwise it will be just expensive solution with an average scan quality. Probably good for somebody who needs to scan hundreds of negatives and quality is not critical. I also can't imagine, how it will be with focusing since flash is not permanent light.

Pentax should create white paper, application list or whatever name of document, covering new features, mainly AF.
K3 is their 1000usd flag ship and they are not able to describe its functionality in detail.
There are such documents from other vendors.
The only reason for that is, that current firmware did not reached expected level of functionality yet.

I write this as moreless happy user of K3.

I am sorry, I don't understand this sentence. Do you want to say, that we can't observe influence of diffraction at all?

I would say:
1) If we take enough good lens, which is not out-resolved by sensor, then we can observe diffraction from certain f stop (which depends on pixel pitch)
2) if we take a bad lens, which is out-resolved by sensor, than the image is more influenced by this lens imperfection

K-3 delay when using the flash
Posted By Jan67

I tested (K3) both pop up flash and external Metz.

1) there is a lag, hard to quantify, I would say between 0,1 and 0,2 sec., in PTTL, both flashes
2) there is no lag if both flashes are set to manual

I would say, that delay is caused by evaluating PTTL pre-flash.
I don't think it's a matter of faulty HW, it's simply so.

There is always possibility to switch to manual flash in time critical situations.

EDIT: The lag comes before pre-flash...
