Just out of curiosity, how does the DA* compare with this Tamron?

Wow yeah I think I'll do just that! Get tye Kr, with the m50 lens that can be had relatively cheap and stick with current 55-300mm..

Especially after reading this http://www.radiantlite.com/2010/10/pentax-kr-vs-canon-t2i-550d.html

Thanks everyone! Pentax it is

Actually I only shoot in good lightning conditions. Outdoors wildlife, so there's
always good lightning and contrast, especially now that it's fall. I have to say,
looking back at the pics I took these last few weeks... The quality is astounding.
Colors are VERY accurate, and bokeh is wonderful. And no doubt the K x is the best
bargain around right now. But AF is important to me, birds and chipmunks don't
wait. I've been reluctant to take many shots because I knew I couldn't get the shot
by the time it would focus.

So basically at this time and price point it's either good IQ at a good price with
great build quality (Pentax) or fast AF and pretty bad and cheap quality (Canon).
Doing wildlife I really need both and guess I had my hopes up for getting both at
this price point.

Here is my favorite photo I took with the K x:
Untitled | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

As for the AF trouble. Here is one example where it simply refused to auto focus:
Untitled | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
(terrible IQ on that photo, not sure why. Then again it took me 2 minutes of trying to AF before going MF, so I didn't care at that point haha). As you can see there's the sun rising in the background and the leaf very much stands out. But this was a glitch. %90 of the time AF works, eventually. It's just slow. And noisy.

Thanks very much for your help! I suppose the best course of action is to return the K-x and just wait for a good balance of AF and IQ in the future. Winter's coming soon anyway, not many animals will be around :p

Can the M 50mm 1.4 be mounted on the K x body or do you need an adapter of some sort? And how does IQ compare to the 18-55 kit lens? Do you know?

Hello,

I'm having a big dillema here. I just bought my first dSLR, K-x with 18-55mm and 55-300mm lens kit two weeks ago. I absolutely love the build quality of both the lens and camera body, and like the colors.

But I do have a small problem with the lenses Pentax makes. The focus on these kit lenses are pretty bad. Doesn't matter if I go with 5 points or 1 center point AF, it does a bad job a lot and I have to either focus a few times before it gets it or just give up and go manual. The motor is REALLY noisy as well, and many times it does a whole zoom loop (where it can't focus and goes in and other of focus).

So I thought... ok these are just kit starter lenses. But I go on Amazon and look at the prices.... they're on average 3x as expensive as comparable Canon lenses I find, and the selection is TINY! Not to mention Canon as the 50mm f/1.8 lens at an amazing price of $99. Something similar on Pentax costs $400! It's ridiculous

So basically can you say something to encourage me to stay? Are Canon lenses the same way on the lower end? And is the focusing problem a body problem or lens problem?

Oh and the dillema is that I have a few days more before I can return the camera kit for a full refund xD forgot to mention

Ah, makes sense. Interesting about the ISO difference. Looking at DPreview comparisons of these cameras, the sensor specs are identical. Couldn't they have put the same sensor into the K7 and maintain the ISO advantage over similar entry-level dSLRs?

Or uhh, maybe I'm confusing K7 and Kr :p

Sorry, new to photography so it's a silly question.

But isn't K 7 better/newer than the K x? It's a lot more expensive, at least. From the last page posts here it sounds like the K 7 is worse?

Which ($<30) tripod will hold Pentax K-x and 55-300mm lens?

Looking to get a tripod but I'm not sure which will hold the weight. I was ready to buy Amazon.com: Sunpak 620-020 2001UT Travel Tripod with Extra Quick-Release Mounting Plate: Camera & Photo but the most helpful review said that if you need to use a 300mm zoom lens you need something sturdier. So I don't know how to tell if a tripod will be sturdy enough for that.

Any advice? Do you think he might be wrong and that tripod will be fine for the K-x and the kit 55-300mm lens?

Thanks!

Shutterfly fits the bill perfect :) there's also photobucket and imageshack, of course. But as far as I'm aware, they don't offer galleries. Just good for linking individual pics.

I apologize. I did not realize I was participating in e-Harmony here.

Where do I set up my profile of likes, dislikes, turn ons, and turn offs?

I don't know about you, but I visit forums for information. Not social outings. I asked a specific question and didn't put a gun on anyones head to do research for me. Merely asking if they stumbled on a similar site in the past.

But to each their own

YES!! Shutterfly is perfect. According to wiki

QuoteQuote:

Shutterfly attempts to differentiate itself from other online photo services such as Flickr and Picasa by allowing unlimited images at no cost. Shutterfly also claims that "they never delete a photo."[1] The service also keeps uploaded photos at their full resolution, rather than scaling down images or otherwise affecting the originals.

I'm looking for a place to store my photos online. Very much like Flickr, where I can link my family my gallery and they can look through. Thing is, I'm not interested in paying for that.

Flickr would work fine with the monthly space allowance, but your older photos disappear from the gallery after 200 photos, so that doesn't work.

Picasa I read has 6GB yearly limit which is too little.

And the only free FTPs I've found are 1GB is size total.

So does anyone know of some site that can fulfill my reqs?

Thanks!

Interesting. How do you know which # you need? Quick Google only brings one aus place that sells it (and no US) and they ask the exact number to ship.

Just guess? Seems odd

Highlight and shadow options

I tested out the sharpness with Shadow Correction (I'm assuming this is what you're asking about) just today. Text is noticeably less sharp with Shadow Correction on (level 3). It does definitely help with underexposed shadows but at the cost of significant sharpness reduction (when zoomed all the way in).

What is the difference between these two 55-300mm lenses?

I got the Kx kit with the two lenses, one being the 55-300mm. There is a silver ring on it. Looking at Amazon, they have the exact same name lens (Amazon.com: Pentax DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED Lens for Pentax and Samsung Digital SLR Cameras: Camera & Photo)

But it has a green ring. What does it mean? And if one is better than the other, how come they have the exact same name??

Just noticed the one on Amazon also has numbering on the focus ring

I have trouble with the viewfinder as well. I see perfect close up but most of the time the viewfinder is quite blurry. I see it best when the diopter is slid to the right most side, and then I see OK for a few seconds, but for some reason my eye adjusts and it's back to being kinda blurry :( and moving the slider to the left any makes it completely unreadable.

Wish they'd offer more sliding to the right

Up to this week K-x with 18-55mm and 55-300mm kit was $628 at B&H. A great deal and I jumped on it. Glad I did because now they're out of stock and price is at $680. Still cheaper than Amazon by a bit

Pentax K-x issue with "shade" WB

Hi all. New dSLR and photography newbie here.

Got the K x last week and really loving it. But I do have one small issue.

When I select "shade" as the white balance, the picture ALWAYS comes out very warm and very golden.

The pictures I tried taking it with were all in the shade (both subject and camera). I never once was in a situation where shade provided a good WB, not even close. Thankfully manual WB adjustment is wonderful and auto WB does a great job as well (but usually just a wee bit cold).

So, any idea what's going on here?
