I bought my studio ligting a couple of years ago now and went through exactly the same dilema. In the end I plumped to buy Bowens stobes second hand on Ebay. Rather than something that just adopted their mount.. (Bowens Gemini.) Hundred's of good offers. So much so I ended up with 6.. A mixture of Gemini 500r and 400r models with Pulsar triggers.
On the plus side... I have a multitude of diffuser's to choose from...?
Never want for power...
Have very strong modelling light's
never wait on recycling times...!
On the downside...
Not as easy to use outside as the battery lights... To weighty for carrying...
Leaving trailing cables.. And when you kick a lamp over on a stand it breaks...
I would certainly consider the new Bowens strobes now they are manufacturing again...!
I Love these light's and have never been let down by them. If I used them more would certainly
PS photoptimist that's rubbish.!! What when you want to change the direction of the natural light...?

Clackers.... You skip some important points here ! "The K1 is only 30% heavier than the K3.... Not much then...!! You can use old K mount lenses... The very lenses that may fit but were outlawed by Ricoh and deemed unsuitable at the K1 launch.. I own two K1's and believe me when they are in a bag with my 15-30 and 24-70mm You certainly know about it...
In my opinion. If you dont know why you need a full frame camera... You dont..!! Why pay twice as much for full frame lenses if you cant reap the benefit ?
I also own my own studio strobes.. The market 90% of which only operate in a manual condition. Im a loyal Pentax user. But Please dont put up an arguement for Pentax flash... The new Godoz trigger is brilliant but will only fire a Godox unit at present..
Mr Northrop only gave the accolade as a landscape camera as I remermber.... The Irix and Samyang lenses you refer too are all manual also... Making them less expensive, Do we always have to be offered 80% of lens build...?
Point I was making on the filter system was that its an expensive choice in full frame,as compared to APSC.... You may get your sport shots.. We all do,, But not with the regularity of the competition,,,
PS I much prefer Kase filters to Lee..... Lee are so last year... and only recently upgraded to glass....lol

I also love off camera flash. Totally agree with Inkista's comments. No need to throw immense amounts of money at it at first.. !! As Class A say's. A $5 trigger and receiver will work. You will just be required to do a little more walking.
Firstly you need to sit down and before picking equipment. Pick your prefered subject matter.. As this will determine the majority of your choices. As you can see here. Most of the guys plumped for more than a single speedlight. So expense has to be kept under control. But things can be added to along the way.. Right now I think it would be foolish not to look at Godox. But it's by no means the only answer. Never had an ultimate use for HSS or TTL yet. So don't pay for things you may or may not use.. ? Depends how much you want to spend ?
If you want to stay Manual the Yongnuo YN560 IV & Tx560 trigger is superb.
And then there's modifiers.......? To start out the fold up ones from Amazon are very good..

Yes ...On camera flash. P-ttl all of the time. Bit more coverage from the Shanny as it's a little more powerful. Both are well built flash units. With the Pentax probably edging it on quality of build. But considering these days its three times the the price. It would be expected. That's the big reason I no longer take it into an event day senario. Where the hustle and bustle of the day can easily get things damaged. (At present Pentax have no official repairer in the UK) For me, when using a flash at events. It comes down to trust and reliability. Can the ttl system return a well exposed image ? A lot of the time you are taking quick candid shots. Running and gunning..!! Cant fire the flash directly. At least grab something you can work on when you get home. And both units have delivered this for me.
It may just be my Pentax unit. But I find the head a little weak when in the bounced tilt position. Difficult to support a modifier. Which the Shanny certainly isnt.
My opinion is when you are purchasing your flash. You have to sit down and analyse before you purchase your flash. What it is exactly what you want it to do.. If you eventually want to build up an off camera wireless system. Then you should steer towards the Pentax units. Or rear curtain sync captures. Other than that, off the top of my head the Shanny can equal all other features, just as well. At a third of the price. A decent quality. Easily affordable reliable unit. Some bells n whistles not all.

Not sure that quite so true...
RICOH IMAGING EUROPE S.A.S. is pleased to announce the launch of an upgrade service that allows existing PENTAX K-1 users to add the advanced functions of the new PENTAX K-1 Mark II to their camera.
They did discontinue the K1. It just hung around so long because they couldn't sell the pre manufactured stock so quickly. They hoped it would attract owners from other brands in large numbers. But the truth is it didn't...!!

Im not a beginner. Ive owned Pentax cameras for 45 years. It wasnt my first wedding. Looking at your banner you dont even own a full frame camera. So dont have the same experiences. Or lens frustrations. So your comments are rather rude if you dont mind me saying... So we will stop this conversation now...

Last weekend I was shooting a wedding as a second shooter, with my K1's. Alongside a guy using the Sony A7III. Believe me its easier to use. The results are superior. I will say the Sony is a bit ugly in my opinion. But thats clutching at straws...

Its very loyal to stand by Pentax at this time. But in all the comments made, No one has offered up a suggestion of a camera that fairs more miseably than the K1II.. And though not particularly voting it in the worst of cameras catagory. It didnt fair too highly in Matt Granger's or Tony Northrop's review of cameras for 2018. But lets leave it at that. Because in my opinion 2019 will be a very big year for Pentax. Maybe the year that will make or break them. Certainly if they plan on being a front runner and play alongside the market leaders. The K1ii is not a good enough offering.. It could get away previously with having slow auto focus. Slow frame rate and lousy to useless video. Primarily only being half a camera. Because it could at least produce a decent still image. So got labelled a decent landscape camera.and was the cheapest DSLR in its class.
But now the Sony A7III is around that price and knocking spots off it in market place. More megapixels, better quality, better video. Smaller size less weight. Better lens range. So big decisions for Ricoh to make.. What direction do you plan on going in.. Because currently it just isnt good enough...|!!

Going along with Nigel here (Not for the first time...lol ) and going to give my vote to the square 60 x 60 box.. The only amendment I would add. Looking at his picure. Is he obviously got his, like me in the earlier day's when they were supplied with a different bracket. This bracket can tilt 90 degrees. Not sure you need on a square box. But they are now supplied with the Godox "S" bracket. Which cant tilt but is a lot more versatile and can accept other modifiers with its "Bowens or Elinchron mount" or an umbrella. Or multi flash accesory should 1 flash not be powerful enough.. Though I suspect that wouldn't be needed..

The plain answer is "NO"... There are far more pixels on the K3 than the K1 in crop mode.. So only full frame lenses are an improvement. Greater reach with Apsc lenses on the K3.. DA15-30 only slightly better than the Sigma 10-20 on the K1. Despite the fact its 3 times the price.. Certainly far easier to carry around. The 15-30 is no fun in this respect.. If your a landscape tog. You can fit filters to apsc lenses at far less cost. Only you can decide if you need a full frame camera..

If your happy with the K5 why change...? The K1 is a fantastic camera. Brilliant dynamic range. But there are also drawbacks compared to a K5.. Expensive, Heavy and a limited number of lenses which are also expensive and heavy..!!
With the K1 you still only buy half a camera as with the K5.. Does not auto focus fast enough. Flash system is way behind the competition. No backing from 3rd party manufacturers and none from Pentax...

and for a landscape camera filters dont fit the DFA15-30 lens... Unless you purchase a very expensive bracket system... To be coupled with an overpriced lens... !!

We as Pentax users can just get the same result for a tenner.....!! Just attach a softbox to your normal flash gun. Same result. No need for a Profoto mortgage. Though I do hate the eye highlight these ringflash type things leave..

Did the test you asked Pentax AF540FGZ on top of K1. in remote mode. Shanny off camera in Manual and slave modes S1 and S2 at full power. In S1 mode the Shanny flash does not sync. In S2 mode though the Shanny then becomes a very capable off camera manual flash with HSS. Though requiring quite an expensive trigger.. I'm no expert so i'll let you come to your own decisions...!!
All images taken at f4 Iso 200 using Sigma 105e. Pentax flash in remote pointed at Shanny flash. Shanny flash full power 4ft from subject on the 45
Image 1... Normal 2 sec exposure. No flash
Image 2... 1 /125 Pentax AF540 P-TTL bounced
Image 3... 1 /800 Pentax AF540 P-TTL bounced.
Image 4... 1 /125 Shanny Added.
Image 5... 1 /500 both flash units.
Image 6... 1 /4000th
Image 7... 1 /8000th.
