Maintaining quality converting from RAW to JPG/PNG

So I've been tinkering with conversion a bit more. I started off not too happy with the results, but have found some of my later results acceptable (btw using Pentax K-X).

Now I can't upload the original, but the head (foam) in the Magic Hat glass was much more defined in the original shot compared to this. I tried Nearest neighbor, which kept the foam detail intact but the whole right of the glass was jagged. I resorted to Bicubic Sharper, which stops the jaggies, but at the sacrifice of some "image pop". Anyway to get around this?

Oh and here's my best shot (I think so far). The right edge got clipped a little too much but I got sick of tinkering with it.

Do not have the cojones to try that. But I had no idea you could swap those out. Maybe in the future when I'm more familiar with the camera I may give that a go.

Pentax K-X - Issue with viewfinder

This issue could be attributed to my eyes, but for the life of me, I'm having trouble seeing through the viewfinder (or in Live View for that matter) that point where I should stop adjusting focus so my subject is sharp.

It's kind of hard to explain in words, but it seems the subject is in focus over a fairly large range. When I'm adjusting the focus over the range, the subject stays in focus but never hits that point where it just pops through the viewfinder and you say "Perfect".

Still makes it look like a good quality point and shoot shot, but definitely not SLR quality.

Where to buy k-x

Ron, I think I know what places you might be referring too. I did a Nextag search for the K-X and this site FumFie popped up, with an amazing price of $469 (w/ kit lens), USA Model, and free shipping (no tax as well if I'm not mistaken). Anyways, I went to reselleratings and they had a respectable 8.14 . However, and I'm not sure what made me do it, but I sorted by all the one star reviews. Everyone had the same story as you had (I believe it was called "the bait and switch") so I figured I'd wait till I had more money and buy it from somewhere else.

I instead bought it at Best Buy online and used my credit card. LOL. It was cheaper at other places (they had two lens kit for $800 last week) but w/ credit card it's 36 months no interest so I decided to get it from there.

Trying to take portraits at dusk or in heavy shade....

Kind of the same issue. Low light situations make the shutter speed skyrocket to around 1/3 which is way too high to use without a tripod (using K-X btw. not K7). I'm confused as to how I'm seeing these concert shots where there seems to be almost no light, no flash, and ISO no greater than 800.

New Pentaxian, tons of newbie questions (K-X v. K-R)

So I finally got the camera in and barely got to play with it. The lighting was pretty awful yesterday as it was dark out and the lights in the house were a terrible source for lighting.

And again I have questions. LOL.

I read through the manual and I'm not sure I'm using RAW right. I switched it to DNG (over from PEF) as I was told it would be easier to recognize in programs. When I download the images to Bridge, the editing options pop up, which is fine, but once it opens up in Photoshop (after I play with the sliders), it says its a 8-bit RGB file. So my concern is am I shooting in 8-bit color RAW or is some conversion occurring at some point that I don't know about? My understanding was it should be > 8-bit until you do the JPEG conversion yourself (i.e. once you do the "Save As..." in Photoshop) . Just want to make sure there isn't some setting I have on/off:

A) on my camera
B) in Bridge
C) Photoshop

Again I had never done it before yesterday so any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: Ok, I think I might've found it. The blue underlined profile underneath the preview was clickable. I switched it to sRGB (to match the camera) and changed it to 16-bit color. The leaves on the ground really popped after that, so I THINK I fixed it.

Pentax K-r now available at Newegg

Best thing about Newegg is no tax. Unfortunately, that benefit wasn't there for the K-X as it's $50 more than Amazon so the difference in price really isn't much. However, since the pricing is the same for the K-R on both sites, this is definitely the best place to grab one.

P.S. $5 extra for shipping on the white. Guess they presume it'll be the most popular model.

Hahaha it must be becoming readily apparent that I am totally new at this camera thing.

I don't really know what higher cost gets me in regards to tripods, so I guess I want something that stays level, has some sort of gauge (or bubbles) to see if I'm level or not, and height adjustable (such as down to a really short height and up to a height in the 5' - 6' range). Not sure I need anything else in a tripod, but if there is your more than welcome to inform me.

I also had (again) another question. The HD video I presume isn't compressed at all. What's a good program to keep the HD but compress it a bit so that I can upload it on Vimeo or YouTube?

EDIT: Just thought of another question, what are the sweet spots for the 18-55 and 55-300 lenses? I also hear the 55-300 > 18-55, what exactly is better about it?

And real quick, I want to say THANK YOU for answering these questions. Most other forums, if your question isn't asked in the main forum, it doesn't get answered. And if you post in the main forum, people get pissed you didn't use the Q&A forum. So thank you all very much.

Thanks again for more replies. Thinking about ditching this UV filter now with that kind of response lol.

I forgot about the batteries, will definitely look into picking up the Eneloop (sp?) brand.

Real quick, Barnes & Noble/Borders are the big time online bookstores (along with Amazon), Newegg is for computers, is there an equivalent for camera gear? Right now I'm strictly looking at Amazon because some of the places on Nextag, which may have the cheaper prices also have reviews claiming they are merely baiting and switching (promise a price, call you up, want you to get the add-on accessories, if you refuse, your order becomes indefinitely delayed) such as Fumfie, so I'm nervous to shop anywhere else.

EDIT: What's a good price for an Eneloop set of batteries and charger?

EDIT2: Good type/brand for tripod?

Thank you for the responses. I'm a little more calm about accepting the K-X now.

So I recently bought the two lenses K-X kit online along with a Sigma Multi-coated UV filter and a cleaning pen. Any other accessories I should be looking into (such as what new neck strap should I buy)?

My other question pertains to the K-R. I was lead to believe the main differences were a better LCD (more colors), an optical viewfinder, and a higher price tag, but the ISO shots I'm seeing in the K-R thread look AMAZING, yet I thought the K-X and K-R shared the same sensor. So I guess my question is, is the IQ difference that great between the two (say a big enough of a difference to go ahead and refuse delivery tomorrow and purchase a K-R instead)?
