I was looking at iPhone 15 PRO, as my old iPhone 8 is about to be done with.

I'm propably part of that 1% who will not use their phone for photoshoots and will not buy 1400€ phone to take photos. my max is 600€ and it will be old stock. EVEN if they would be identical with IQ. It is all about that feel of having that actual camera up your eye. Looking through that VF and taking that image. No phone can do that. Phone photos are handy, but they are not really for enjoying that photography moment.

about sensor size and all that...what ever drifts your boat. I really liked my K-1, feel all of that. not so keen on FPS and especially AF. K-3III was more like what it should feel like. Immediate response. Rarely go above 6 FPS with any camera. Usually single shots.

It is interesting. This new global shutter. guys who have also videography in mind, were/are hoping for amazing hybrid and sports/news shooters might have what they wanted to have for long time. I saw comparison between Canon R3 and A9III(youtube, similar spec and similar kind of users where Canon has very fast readout). Well, one and biggest advantage for Sony is that LED panels don't cause problems. Then again. We have already got used of a wee a bit rolling shutter and how it looks and difference was not big. ISO noise was problem for Sony, but for what this camera will be used for, it might not be that big deal.

Now when it does come down to high quality images...well there are better tools.

that said, it will be interesting to see what will follow from this.

I'v shot with many Pentax lenses adapted to canon 45 MP sensor. They'll keep up with that with out any problem even older FA primes worked just as well as with K-1.

These HD coated remakes should be even better, let alone high end DFA * lenses.

thaey could go all the way 61, but I think actually 36-45 MP is kind of sweetspot in terms of performance and IQ. Some might be happy even with 33 or 24...

Ricoh updated lens roadmap (2023.8.29)

When you think about MF and 645 Z& now Fuji GFX. Pentax didkind of open that door for cheaper with similar quality. It did change digital MF. Problem for Pentax was that they did try to get all aps-c, FF and 645 lines going. And should there not have been GFX 100S, they might still have that goal(could be that there is still some hope? Waiting for good solution?) .

Whe you look at roadmap. It is quite unfair to Pentax to place ’just’ 645 at there, while Fuji G is their solution instead of FF.

So having both 645 and FF from Pentax side would be more fair(especially with a bit older 645 roadmap). For Pentax 645. Yes. It is sad.

For what remains, like FF line and it’s future which has kind of taken the lead now from 645 line. While that door has been opened, in order to take a bit pessimistic view, you could be looking at possibility of improved aps-c and all what can be Pentax FF line. After all compared to Fuji G it is actually not too bad.

Fuji is competing had towards other FF offerings and they have pretty solid background of video industry too, now together with blackmagic that really want to get their foot at there. New GFX 100 II being priced close to 100S and I do predict that 100S II could be close to Canon R5II(when it is coming) and Nikon Z8.

Pentax is not going at there, and they are not going for those Z5 or R8 territory or R100 or what ever is at there(each brand coming up with several models every year, especially Sony…… Pentax is coming with solid couple alternative lineup. Crop entry, entusiast and pro/enthusiast and then FF offering. Every of these lines made for photographers who like OVF. And that is it.

Now to even more cherish it, they have film project. Was that also for masses? No. This was to raise that old almost forgotten(technically) artform of making film camera. For enthusiasts and also for young generation who want to try that old film stuff.

Tone with this discussion is turning -as usual- some what just to look things with your glass half empty, instead of how about all the good stuff, like actually having brand new K-3III and also one with mono sensor.

I'v used Panasonic S5 + 20-60 (owned it too). while it is very nice to have focal lenght, it is a wee a bit annoying to have to use those corrections(image does not look good w/o them). Especially if you have to already push ISO and then you want to do some PP ... it completelly does destroy the image. Same goes for RF 24-105/4 from Canon. Wide end has quite a bit of distortions. (compared to 28-105 from pentax which was not forced to go all the way to 24 mm.) You'll end up pumping ISO up with slow zooms anyway(f 4 and up). Vingette and distortions is bad combination for darker shots.

Mirrorless tech does help with making these small 20-70 and 24-70 lenses but they do rely quite a bit on corrections, just because of how they have been built. Same goes for fast primes. This is why we might never see that kind of things with pentax. They do rely on making lenses correct with out majore need for corrections.
Classic pancake 40/2.8 or 43/1,9 seems to be what we have and many does enjoy that. Let us see if and when there will be that 35/1.4. That will be that fast option. It would be really surprising to have 40/1.4 althou not impossible. already 35/1.4 will be expensive for sure, if it will come since they wanted to take it away from roadmap.

I hear you about that 90(or85)/2 lens(M80/2). with possible macro feature. Hard to see it coming with every penny counts policy since we have 77/1.8 and you can slap +1 diopter on it and we also have very recently renewed HD 100/2.8 macro, which is very nice for what it is(price/performance ratio also being WR and small)..

I'm realy looking forward what Pentax/Ricoh will come up with. They say that their intention is not to go where other companyes already are, to keep things special they will have unique things for Pentax fans..so we will wait..

Yeah, month is done. I'll also do a little sum up. It has been quite a rollercoaster for me this spring, why I had to let go most of my photography gear. Luckily I did not sell my DFA*70-200 because i did get photo/video gigs and it would have been impossible with out that one.

some one talked about cameras, and k-3III is propably one of best cameras out there from pentax. Looks and feels like Pentax, but handles like any modern camera. I have to say that I'm missing that camera. Interesting thing is that I don't really miss my K-1(original) that much.(yes, I have Canon R5C so my 'fullframe' needs are covered, but I don't mean that).

this will bring me to this *ist DS. which is actually my single in as well as my FA 31 is. due it's poor AF and small eye piece and very small rear LCD, it is really old fashion hybrid from film to digital. You shoot, but big bonus is that you get to see if things are looking okay. you can't even see if it is in focus or not. Like you would with modern camera. I'm also not enjoying long battery life. I might get 200 shots with fresh batteries. So you want to make every shot count.

in a word, it is actually very enjoyable process. 6 MP is enough for me to have picture zoomed in 200% ... yes it is not brutally sharp, like modern cameras, but it really does not need to be either. Althou that 200% is max with my 16" mac book pro. more than that and it is mushy. Actually it is way better than I thought it would have been. This camera is not for casual shooters and for people who like to enjoy and trust what camera can do. Perhaps use 6x zoom in to make sure if focus is spot on. But still, even if it is kind of painful at the times, it is actually quite enjoyable experience, atleast for me it was/is. not going to put this camera back at the drawer. For example with Canon I can even see from EVF the image i took, if I don't trust back screen. Handy, and necessary at sertain moments(like for video EVF is absolutelly needed, you can't trust back screen). But it does take this experience away.

With K-3III I did have both. I could just quickly see if everything is alright and keep on shooting nothing to distract. But even with that I quickly did begin pixel peep during shooting and what not. but you could shoot everything. with *ist DS you will be more restricted. and not having any IBIS does bring other problems. Still. what a fun little camera.

Now for FA 31. I have already done single in with it and what has been said, still remains. How ever at the beginning of this month I did mention that this was my LBA dream when I had my *ist DS. I just had kit lens, old cosina 28/2.8 and m 40-80/2.8-4 and vivitar 70-210/3.5(macro)

I really think that it does make a huge difference to have a lens like this. Beautiful rendering and IMO those blemishes which looks bad on modern sensores, does not bother me at all with CCD. I'm seriously considering of buying K10D...I'm stil thinking of 645 D/Z and let us see, perhaps if I see something at Tokyo in couple of weeks... who knows..

But yes, FA 31 is a gem. I use it also with Canon for video actually. I'll propably buy modern canon lens/cinema lens for this kind of shooting, but enviromental portraits, is really good with this lens. natural vingette and distortion does make everything 'pop' like nothing else. I almost never use 'lens correction' with thislens, because it removes 70% of the /soul/ immediatelly and this is why it is superb with video too(going to save up for HD version to get rid of PF). Absolutelly this lens is one of appriciated but also most underrated lenses (why some guys calls it as 'Diva' which is well deserved name too). Only limited I cold see my self selling when I would be in need of money would be FA 77. not FA 31, FA 43 maybe? not this one. if you see me selling it, it is kidney or this(perhaps not 100% serious, but close)

all in all great month. Would do another single in, but heading to Japan(finally international tour) next month so this camera(*ist DS) would not cut that trip and that is kind of statement too(dunno, might sneak it in with DA 40/2.8 XS and try to find those accu batteries for it while at Tokyo second hand camera shops).. anyway.

This is it. Really enjoyed after I did get used to this camera and what it is/was, the whole photography experience did kind of level up. I was/still am. missing my K-3III. time to time. but this was a good experience.

thank you all for this month. It has been a pleasure.

will be back at august. maybe late start, and all that, but yeah.

take care all!

Yeah, As I had to unfortunatelly sell my K-3III as my couple of last months has been not so good...I'm going to go with the dream set up I had when I bought my *ist DS several yrs a go. Single in with FA 31 and *ist DS. Will see if this is going to be a reshoot single ins with my limiteds...with nice old CCD sensor...(getting mentally ready for 645D) :D

I think that I have seen many wanting FA 50/1.4 revamped when DFA 50/1.4 did arrive. We also do have this DA 50/1.8.

I do think this was a good move, ofcourse you can't please everyone. That said, who knows which of the legendary lenses they will bring later on with same treatment. Modern 85/2 would be nice(talking about making M 85/2 with (or without) AF and HD coatings). ofcourse 135 is needed too :)

K-1 i vs K3 III Just discussion.

My 2 cent. I have K-1 and i went for that mainly because of, well FF and it was something new. It did took me several months to get to know my photography with new tool. After that i did see the -benefit- of FF. and I'm still seeing it. However. I'd say that 30 % of my keepers i do really see that still it is very good, especially when I shoot RAW and with my best lenses. FA 31, 77 and DFA 15-30 and *70-200. I can have fun with other stuff too. FoV. is different and that more shallow Dof does give some extra, and you can stop down lenses more than aps-c(and you have to too in some circumstances)but that is not the golden key to happines.

Sometimes more Dof is great, so you can have lens more opened up for wider Dof. For travel and documenting and some journal work you don't really need FF. Especially K-1 because it is more field or studio camera. It is slow and files are great only if you get job done properly. Every one buying one should think of that. Also some aps-c lenses will never get good enough for FF even if it would look okay. corners are mushy, vingetting, ect. it might be alright for some stuff, but when you want that extra you paid for to get FF, you want good lenses, atleast I do.

now this is apples and oranges explained.

Then.

performance of this K-3 mk.III is going to be very good. you won't find anything like that from K-1. Where K-1 wins, will be resolution and perhaps DR and bigger format will win in narrow Dof and aboility to stop down to f 11-16 to get other advantages.

lenses will be bigger. but you know that.

The thing is, if you like your lenses with your K50 and only thing lacking is better performance in ISO, Fps and SR. K-3 mk.III should be the thing to go for. no question about it, let alone the bells and whistles and smell of 'new camera'.

If you are unhappy with performance with your lenses, want shallow Dof and wider DR and don't mind about slow pace of work. Go for K-1 mk.II. There is plenty of pictures at this forum too. I did see clear change in my style and way of shooting after jump from K-3 to K-1. But then again I'v worked hard to make it work. And i did get a big set of lenses for my K-1 which made the change eventually. Quality is different. but then again. I'm lusting for K-3 mk.III to fill my ned of journal/family photos/travel and fast paced gigs. that and for the smell of the 'new camera'. BUT I'll be using my K-1 too, when I know that I need it. I might go out with just K-1 and some of my favourite lenses or just with K-3 mk. III, or both. Then again, I have big set of lenses for both cameras ready, some I can easilly use in both.

oh, and one thing which catched me with K-1 was that OVF. A big thing to think about. I wanted that, I still love it. If this K-3 mk.III would not come with this new OVF, I'd not even consider it. Then there are some other great things too and most propably even more to be revealed.

I have tried DFA70-200 + HD TC with K-3III.

In near distance it is fairly okay. When you shoot a bit further away, it looses some of character and is soft. You really need to stop it down. I also tried DA 55-300 WR and while it is already a bit softer and slower, quality did not suffer as much. In fact I’d recommend HD DA 55-300 PLM and TC for the time when you want more reach and use D FA * 70-200 as it already is. So much better and you get great f 2.8 performance. Just crop what you need.

My 2 cents.

Bad amigo review is skewing rating

I'd say that this has happened with other reviews as well. I happen to have all 3 amigos and started up with FA 77, followed by 43 and then 31. FA 31 limited does have it's quirks which has lead to some users call it as 'Diva' and this is mostly because it can also deliver very beautiful images when it 'want'. This is not true completelly, because you can learn what does work and what does not (strenghts and weakness thing with this lens). But sometimes it's character does give that unique look we all know it produces. Most of it's 'faults' has been addressed with HD version while still having most of the character left.

I have SMC made in Japan version. And yes, it has it's character and is best seen when used with K-1(which I sold and am now using K-3III). I'm lusting after DFA 21 because it seems to have that magic even with K-3III what 31 has on K-1 AND can be used with that new K-1 which is hopefully coming also.

Compared to more modern lenses(like Sigma 35/1.4) this lens is not as uniform and predictable, especially if you shoot wide open. And these characteristics can lead to some one get very frustrated when they invest a lot of money to it. Honestly. While it can deliver very beautiful wide open images and it has character, just like your FA 43 does, but differently.

Then again, stopped down FA 31 compares quite well even with most recent lenses. Some people does say that this is not the reason why you buy f 1.8 lens.

( Actually for that reason you have DFA * 50 and * 85. )

you buy FA 31 limited for the whole image, not for pixel peep, especially when shooting wide open. I usually leave auto correction off at LR, because then it will look just like any other wide lens with out character.

That is my 2 cents.

I do agree. Supposedly all has been made for one sensor in mind. 45 MP would be more than enough, but I think there has been a rumour of 61 MP couple yrs back(same sensor that Sigma FP is using). So more new 61 MP could be it too?

I suppose that also 645 Z II could have been coming as 100 MP version.

Still saying that 45 MP would be enough..
