Nikon is buying Red

Some people already went nasty and said that nikon bought RED because of their video RAW debate. Because RED has that patent. Then again, they could have sold it with out the patent... But yeah. Nikon has already got quite good video in their cameras and supposedly global shutter coming too, even before this deal.

From Sony, Canon and Panasonic. Nikon is(was) one who is with out big cinema -thing. There were a rumour that Nikon was working together with Blackmagic at some point. To get their video right, but maybe it was just to ge that Blackmagic recorder to work, like it does with Panasonic.

Well. Nikon has taken their position, atleast a great possibility to get there. So far they have 'just hybrids' for video. Let us see if it is union like Ricoh + Pentax where they leave each for their own strenghts but use know how fro sharing. So RED will be red and Nikon just has the real 16 bit RAW video(which would be quite big thing) and global shutter to not just compete with Sony but crush it in terms of IQ for video compared A9III. Is there Nikon cinema camera coming. Will RED have lens lineup from Nikon, which would also be used in Nikon cameras. Nikon did jump late for MILC -party and Hybrids. Really struggled to get their tech up to par with Canon and especially Sony. They have caught up, and it could be that with this they will take that nro. 1 position. Everybody will be looking at them. Canon is propably working on their new cinema lineup, Burano and FX line butchered their C300&500&70 lineup. R5C is not that remarkable in that regard, not really cinema camera, great hybrid.

I'm not xpert, just interested.

I was looking at iPhone 15 PRO, as my old iPhone 8 is about to be done with.

I'm propably part of that 1% who will not use their phone for photoshoots and will not buy 1400€ phone to take photos. my max is 600€ and it will be old stock. EVEN if they would be identical with IQ. It is all about that feel of having that actual camera up your eye. Looking through that VF and taking that image. No phone can do that. Phone photos are handy, but they are not really for enjoying that photography moment.

about sensor size and all that...what ever drifts your boat. I really liked my K-1, feel all of that. not so keen on FPS and especially AF. K-3III was more like what it should feel like. Immediate response. Rarely go above 6 FPS with any camera. Usually single shots.

I think that if i would now start to put aside 5€/day, I could have money for K-1III when it will arrive. In fact, I migh even do so. I quess that k-1III will arrive 2025 spring. With DFA*35/1.4(this could actually arrive 2024 autumn)..
edit: I want my K-1III with DFA 21, *35,*50*85 and *70-200(I already have this last one..)

Had to look, even that Sigma fl L(61 MP) was still 2900€ here at Finland and that camera is basically ‘just’ frame holding that sensor. You want EVF for it, you buy it separately… so. K-1III if it would launch under 3000€, as we could imagine being camera you don’t need to buy accessories to make it work… that would be a bargain actually.

That aps-c / FF discussion is old thing. Now a days image quality is almost similar. Generally lenses are smaller for smaller format, but your longer lenses have more reach too. Especially so with m4/3 system or Pentax Q. FF and especially 645 does offer more control and DR and image quality but it is probably not what you can see clearly from all images. Larger systems do also weight more naturally and they do tend to be more expensive too. This is why aps-c has been thought as best compromise in terms of cost and quality.

You should look reviews of that camera then :) Yes, it does refer to similar effect you get with video that you will get with electronical shutter when there is not fast enough readout speed and especially when you shoot with high MP sensors. So fast movement stretches. or if you do panning, it'll look similar of paused image from video with 'jello'. This only in ES mode. Same will happen if you switch K-3III to ES mode and you capture almost any movement in your shot. (also why global shutter in mirrorless cameras is kind of big deal for stills, or could be)

Mechanical shutter will eliminate this.

Well propably most of K-1III buyers are still holding their K-1 originals and if they have already bought K-3III that is completelly fine too :)

This is true. They do last long, so at the end you get plenty for what you have invested for.

It does make sense, and also K-3III was delayed from its launch. Now actually we do have only rumours of K-1 III. Actually that 61 MP sensor has been rumoured for yrs. and it is only because other brand got to get it first Sigma Fp 61mp (did not really go that well. Dunno how and if Leica q3 has same sensor? Sigma FP is not that expensive but oh boy that shutter free operation… amount of Jello even at stills… anyway we don’t have that problem.

It is interesting if AF is not good enough from K-3III. Someone said that price will be lowered by just improving K-1 prism. But it could be that for AF it does need to be very bright too.

Yes, I know. Still many Pentax ambassadors posted video taken with K-3III when it did arrive and it is kind of what many do want to do(some of those videos did look ok, but many did not). I'm actually quite aware of the fact that most pentaxians don't want/need video an actually new smartphones are very capable doing that as good or even better than many DSLR/MILC.

I have camera that can do professional grade video -because I need it- and I do not hold it against pentax for not having that. I was just hoping that it would be a bit better and for many this is important. If next K-1III will have K-3III innards and just more polished pentaprism, I'll buy it(unless it is 3500).

Yes, Should K-3III it self have been big seller, they could have propably already gone forward and get that camera out. ? Then again. I really think that they have to get around that slow writing speeds all in all. Just because buffer for K-3III was not enough (26 MP) and also if they will have video at all, it should be more like their 'competition'. K-3III video was a step up, but it had horrible jello and cropped 4K mode from 24p. HD video was okay. And record limit up till 30 min. Also present 8 bit video is not so good... every other brand has 10 bit and some sort of -flat- profile, even if it would be 8 -bit it would still give nice room for PP. (OR just leave HDMI open so that you could use ATOMOS or similar and leave processing to them...)

Native resolution for 61 MP should be around 8 K or actually even higher. So oversampled 4 K. That is heavy. Even Sony A7 V has huge jello problem too and many other cameras in this MP range, unless stacked sensor..but that jello is less than K-3III cropped 4K.

Should they go head to head against othe 61 MP sensor cameras(not that many, Leica q3, Sony and actually even Fujifilm MF). Price range is around 5-6000€

And it should be around Sony A7 IV price. ? to hit the competition with super IQ and great price.

So, all of that in 3200€ at launch is somehow still painfull amount for pentaxians but not too much for what it could offer? (I'd really like 'just 36 or 42 MP' sensor with that kind of updated video specs I mentioned, and K-3III things in K-1 format.) and in 2500€ range...but it is much to be asked...

When APSC Image quality is 2 stops better than FF...

I think it can be very useful for those who really want to eliminate unwanted jello and FINALLY get the exact moment catured after so many yrs of trying.

Price alone with this camera is what does set it apart from 'normal' cameras. Also when company is doing 'flagship' it is always overkill. just to put that big fat text :120 FPS, world first Globalshutter in still camera...etc. for those guys who want something more exciting for their money. (actually many FF high ends are around here and Fuji MF...at Finland it is around 7-8000€ just the camera :D )

But, also it is still very interesing that Sony is going to this direction. It is not -that- bad image after all and Sony will be baking in NR and other things to make it look better. (did look Gerald undone and his DR tests at youtube, and he did place this next to A7 IV practically saying that A7 has baked in NR (at NR set to zero) and when similar (by eye) NR is applied to A9III it will have similar DR in video. Which does lead to saying that Sony is tempering their cameras so that they have plenty of NR and what not applied ... just like many other companyes(remember big fuzz about pentax having similar tech, but that is whole different discussion).

It is interesting. This new global shutter. guys who have also videography in mind, were/are hoping for amazing hybrid and sports/news shooters might have what they wanted to have for long time. I saw comparison between Canon R3 and A9III(youtube, similar spec and similar kind of users where Canon has very fast readout). Well, one and biggest advantage for Sony is that LED panels don't cause problems. Then again. We have already got used of a wee a bit rolling shutter and how it looks and difference was not big. ISO noise was problem for Sony, but for what this camera will be used for, it might not be that big deal.

Now when it does come down to high quality images...well there are better tools.

that said, it will be interesting to see what will follow from this.

I'v shot with many Pentax lenses adapted to canon 45 MP sensor. They'll keep up with that with out any problem even older FA primes worked just as well as with K-1.

These HD coated remakes should be even better, let alone high end DFA * lenses.

thaey could go all the way 61, but I think actually 36-45 MP is kind of sweetspot in terms of performance and IQ. Some might be happy even with 33 or 24...

I was just thinking about it a while a go. who knows. it is only one missing form the lineup. K-III has been coming for a while now. as said here, same old story. I was almost thinking that they would have rethought their K-1III all together. budget, price, should we go all in like K-3III with quite big price tag...or... but yeah. DFA 35/1.4 should not be a compromise.

Hi all!

Here it goes, my economical situation is forcing me to let go of my last premium Lenses. I have been using these a lot and all of them are very good, great edge to edge, no corrections have been needed in camera...your camera might be different, but for me, all has been great. and I'm actually sad to let them go..

I know that good times will return, but that does not help me much right now.

I have also invested in Canon for now and propably will invest in MF next...Video has been the reason why I have invested in Canon, if anyone is interested of why.

Here it goes, items are located at Finland, Raasepori. And will be sold in EU preferably, but I'm willing to ship them also worldwide.
Shipping expences will be paid by buyer as well as returning the item. Please ask before buying, I'm not just sending them over to be tried if you like them or not.

Here are the lenses, I'm describing them as well as I can and you can judge them from pictures your self. as said, please ask for more info if interested of the item.

They also have multiple shot stack for reducing ISO noise...this might be the reason why. Will be interesting to see how and what this will be able to do, one should avoid high iso obviously :D . it all comes down with advantages and disadvantages.
