Special Event 5x Giveaway: Eye-fi 8Gb Pro X2!!

I actually had not heard of these before this contest, and now I want one! Aside from being a larger capacity than any memory card I can currently afford on my limited student budget, the geotagging and wi-fi are the biggest potential bonuses. I too am an archaeologist, specializing in rock art, and I often have great difficulty in setting up shots in awkward places and poor lighting. I'm very much a novice photographer and I have had some very disappointing results.

Often I find that editing the color of the images with software such as GNU Image Manipulation Program reveals additional paintings on the rock surface which I was not able to see properly in person. Many times I have photographed a site in a distant location only to find that I have captured just part of an image, but because the site is in a remote location in another country I have little chance of returning to the field. The ability to use a device such as a netbook, both to check the quality of the photos as well as to perform such image manipulation on location without the need to move the camera, would be a great benefit for me. The automatic geotagging is also very appealing, particularly since my aging GPS unit seems to be delivering very poor results and I often forget to use it, meaning that I then have to find another means of determining the location of a photograph.

Stupid question about DSLR lenses: DA vs AL?

I've probably just been looking in the wrong places for the answer to this basic question.

Anyway I recently bought a used K10D. I knew the lens was damaged a bit (that's why it was affordable!) but I just noticed the other day that there is actually a big crack in the plastic housing that holds the actual glass in place, just where the screw threads for attaching a filter are. I don't think it is that big of an issue, at least for now, but I was thinking about shopping for a replacement.

But I'm a little confused as to what I am actually looking for. If I search on, say, ebay for "Pentax SMC DA 18-55" I get a bunch of results for "SMC AL". What's the difference between DA and AL? Which is the appropriate one to get?

Software to rename/move files based on EXIF data, etc?

I have a huge folder of old images that I would like to re-organize. Most of them have been dumped into folders that are vaguely descriptive, but there are lots of duplicates, cruddy images that don't really need to be saved, etc.

I have been working on establishing some file naming conventions and a set of tags that I can use to describe all of the images consistently. It would be nice if I could then use those tags (which, depending on the software you use, can be written to the file itself) to automatically move the files into subdirectories.

Does this make any sense? I envision it working something like the program MP3tag, which you can use to assign properties like artist/album to a group of files, then automatically move those files from their existing subdirectories into a single folder by album, and/or rename the files to something like "artist - track name", depending on which fields you tell it to use. Software like Windows Photo Gallery or DigiKam (Linux) can assign similar info to the files based on the tags you add, but I don't think that they can rename or move them using this information.

Does anyone know of such a program? It can be either Linux or Windows, I use both on my computer.

Huh. I didn't realize I was joining such an exclusive group! I just figured that since I'm an unemployed student who can only afford Tesco value film, so I might as well put the old K1000 away and go digital. I never knew it would be such a status symbol! ;)

Beginners question about noise (clunk) in a Pentax DSLR

Ha, I'm glad this is the first post I've seen in the beginner's corner! I just got my first Pentax DSLR in the mail today and the box was mangled so the first thing I did was inspect the camera. When I turned it over to check the bottom for damage, the first thing I noticed was the clunk! I dismissed it since everything seems to work but I'm glad to get confirmation that it's normal! ;)

Hi all! I've read a few threads on here the last few days and decided I may as well join.

I am really a complete novice when it comes to photography, although I enjoy taking photos of all sorts of random stuff. Most of the time I have been using a Kodak point-and-shoot but I have been wanting to get a DSLR and learn some proper photography skills for a while.

I have an an old Asahi K1000 35mm, which my Dad got me for an undergraduate photography course, and I have been intending to stick with Pentax ever since. An uncle of mine was a professional photojournalist and he always used Pentax, even when he went digital. He gave me several nice, if old, lenses over the years and I wanted to be able to use them with a digital camera.

Just this morning I recieved my new-to-me K10D by special delivery, and I've been wasting a lot of time playing around with it. I chose this model because it is a little bit newer and has more megapixels, etc. but is old enough that I got the whole kit including a Pentax brand battery grip and a brand new 4GB SDHC card for 300GBP including delivery.

Also, this model seems to have lot of options for easy-to-access manual control, which seems to be a good feature given that I plan to use a lot of old antique lenses! Reviews I have read also say that it is pretty rugged and dust-resistant as well, and since I am an archaeologist who frequently wants to take nice detailed photos in muddy or dusty conditions, this seemed like a good thing to have!

Anyhow I will stop babbling at this point! Nice to meet you all.
