Thanks guys. I'm off to check out the resources you suggest. My "tutor" concurs with learning about light and has given me "homework" to practice those things.
I needed to get a grasp on the manual lens part to help with my homework, instead of just changing settings and shooting blindly.
My ultimate goal is to be able to take great portrait shots, without a studio, necessary for my little clothing design business.

Thank you. I'm using a K-x. And have gotten pretty good at manual focus over the past few months. I've also learned to use ISO somewhat to my advantage.
I have a photographer helping me with camera basics, but she has a different type of camera and auto lenses that are made for her camera. She knows a lot about photography in general, but only as it applies to her equipment.
This is why I came here to learn about the specifics of these lenses.
TIA

Thank you. This does help. I have no A on my camera and now more fully understand the value of the "green button".
Is there a place to learn what all the numbers on the dials of these lenses mean, especially the middle (fixed) dial. I realize the outter dial is distance and the inner dial is aperature. And there are many more numbers on the zoom/macro lense. Sure wish I had manuals for these lenses... That may be the place to learn about them.

I must have misstated what I'm after. I want to learn how to do these things with these manual focus lenses, specifically. The beginner forum is nice, but has not answered the specifics of using these manual lenses. Where can I read about use of manual lenses...unlocking their potential. I know there has to be more to these than set the aperture, focus and shoot.... Or is that really all that is different with manual lenses verses auto?

I have a K-x. I've read how to fit them on and change the settings to allow manual focus. All is going well on that front. They both shoot and shoot well. Now I want to maximize them. Since I've never used any type of camera with manual lenses, I don't know how to maximize their potential. I've googled and googled and am still not getting the lead I need to learn how to set these things up.
I did get some nice shots yesterday with bokeh, and with both lenses. The zoom I set on macro for it. All of my shooting was done by experimentation. The bokeh shots were only achieved at a very close range. I'd love to learn how to shoot full body and still get nice bokeh. I excited to "unwrap" these things.
TIA

I'm new to manual. My dad gave me 2 nice manual lenses. The one a 50mm 1:2 and the other a zoom w/macro. I'm starting with the prime lens. Where can I find pic. tutorials or video on how to use this lens? Other than put it on, focus and shoot... I'm sure the dials and numbers mean something and that I can manipulate it more than I am.

Where to buy k-x

FWIW, I wasn't recommending them. My camera did come as described, but I may have been lucky. There were so many red flags, that I won't order there again and wouldn't have ordered if any of those red flags had presented themselves before placing my order.
I'd say an order could be risky. I surely felt like mine was. Also, I sent an email to them, during the process, and noticed it actually went to "Camera King". I've recently heard about that company. Maybe their company has two names.
I'd dig further or order from a reputable seller here for sure.

I have the camera. I'm not sure I'd recommend the company, their business practices had me a bit worried. But, it came as described and the warranty checked out with Pentax so I'm happy. Now to learn how to use it..
I'll be reading quite a bit here. ;)
Thanks.

Ken,
Thank you. I checked...USA warranty and 30 day return policy (for any reason). I placed my order. They did call to confirm my address and "offer me" an extended life battery. Ron and other said a similar sales pitch happened to them. I said I needed nothing further and there was no pressure. It was a lot like "do you want fries with that".
So far so good, I think. The cs person verified that it was a new and in the box camera from Pentax with a full 1 yr. Pentax warranty.
With their 100% ebay feedback, I'm feeling relatively confident that I'll get what I'm expecting.
If so, I'll be sure to share about the deal here.

Anyone know about QuickStopDigitals. I don't see any reviews on them. And, don't want to meet disappointment again so soon.

My order from unbeatable sales was just cancelled :( They said it was backorder for the forseeable future from the manufacturer...according to Pentax...not true.
Back to square one and so disappointed.

I ordered a K-7 during the "fire sale" yesterday. I've yet to receive a cancellation email, but my order is still pending. We'll see. If that fails, I'll go back to being patient.
Thanks for the tip on the resellers site.

I can't afford the cameras at these places, and they don't have any used/refurb. I did find a refurb at Quick Stop Digital. Was this one of the companies with which you had a problem. I do intend to call and get a feel for them, prior to ordering.

I've checked the sponsors here and the marketplace. I'm wanting a k-x (w/kit lense). Gently used or new. My budget is very, very small. I found one here in my budget, but it was sold.
Where would you buy such?

Lens compatability

Thank you. I'm trying out a k-x tomorrow. Dad is mailing me the lenses and his case. I sure hope this works. The lenses are labeled 1:4 f=80-200mm auto zoom macro and auto 1:20 50mm. He had a ksx sears (pentax) 35mm.
If the try out is successful, meaning if I can understand the camera at least a little tomorrow. I'm ordering one on Amazon with a kit lens for daily use. The camera and kit lens are less expensive than the point and shoots I was considering. And, amazon has a 30 return, for any reason, policy. Just in case the lenses won't work, or the camera is waaay too much learning for me.
Thanks again. I hope to be back learning more in this forum.

Hello, I'm new to this forum. I'm searching for lens info. I'm considering switching from point and shoot to slr. The biggest factor has been cost. In speaking with my dad, he told me he has a Ksx from sears, made by Pentax 35mm. He has two lenses with it that he'd set me up with.
Question: would these lenses be compatible with a dslr? If so which and where would I buy such?
