These are the sort of shots I aspire to, so thanks for sharing them and letting us know the set up. I am going to try the same technique when my new lens arrives.

I love lightening shots and these are good, though the last one is something else. We don't get much of that sort of weather here sadly.

Made me stop and look, always the sign of a great image. Crop improves it even more.

Just to let you know that I use the tripod mount that came with my Tamron SP300 f5.6, and I have found it gives excellent support, especially if the base points towards the front of the lens. I have a cheap monopod but with care it works well.
I have used my Tamron SP F converter but the PF can be terrible which puts me off. Would rather crop the image in PP.

I have 3 in this focal length, all manual focusing. The best is without doubt the SMC K300 f4, which is no surprise. I paid £95 for mine a year ago, and they are out there for that money if you look carefully. It is a beast of a thing, and needs a monopod if you are out and about but the images are wonderful.
If I want something much lighter I use a Tokina RMC 300 f5.6, which I got for £50. This has surprised me on lots of occasions with it's IQ, which is not too far off the Pentax. I also have Tamron SP 300 f5.6 and 01f converter. This is mainly used as a macro set up, but for telephoto work it is more than acceptable (without the converter). Not up to the Tokina but not too far off either (I was surprised by this). As it is an adaptall lens there are more of them around than the Tokina and they are cheap.
Hope this helps. :)

I would be interested in the 300 if it's still available. Note location but can be sent to US address if required.

This is certainly a keeper for me. It is well built, very sharp with lovely bokeh. Like Roy I have experimented with extension tubes with pleasing results which I would post if I did not have a problem with CS3.

I have both the M & A series zooms and both are really good. I use the A because it is easier, but I will not be selling the M as it is too good for the money I would get.

Thanks for that, I'll check but it probably won't be the delicious one. How's the new Tamron doing? Had a hernia yet? :D
Update. Turns out it was an F system BBAR MC version, and the initial results are not bad at all on my K 300 f4. I may buy it as it's not much money, but I will probably buy a Kenko PRO 1.4x new.

So Roy, sounds like it won't work on my Pentax glass.

Thanks for the info. Just had a quick look and it is an impressive site. Just need to make sure it will work with my K 300 f4.

all I can say is what the guy in the store read on the converter itself. I know very little about converters, but I know the SP range is highly regarded and that is why I am interested. Plus it is at a good price. Is there a website which lists all Tamron products?

a local store has one of these in a K mount and I am going to see it in a couple of days, and was wondering if there is anything in particular I should be aware of. Any guidance welcome.

It was a buy it now at £299. Guess someone thought it was too good to miss, though it was listed for nearly 4 days. At least I cannot be tempted.

I am definately going to keep the Pentax, I love the IQ and can put up with the size. I will get the lens and tell the ball and chain the Tokina is highly thought off, and she can feel confident using it. I doubt whether she will feel it's not a good lens. There is a Tamron like Roys on the UK ebay for £299, and I am seriously thinking about buying it.

I have had this lens for several years, first to use on my MX and now on my K100d. I also have the DA 55-200 which is my general purpose walk around lend. When I go out to shoot with a particular purpose in mind I take the old lens as I prefer the images it produces. It is also built like a tank and will be going strong long after the DA has given up the ghost. There are examples going on ebay for under £50 which makes it great value for money.

No chance to try it out, mainly as I am very busy with work and the other half does not want to take responsibilty fro this major purchase.

I had a PLC 2 , Pentacon 1.8 and Zeiss 135 back in the mid 70's and always regarded the lenses as very capable. For the money they were great value, but you must be aware that the 135 was made by CZ of Jena, in the old East Germany and not by Carl Zeiss of West Germany (who made the brilliant lenses for among other the Contax RTS). The electrical contacts mentioned will only work for open aperture meetering on the cameras it was designed for, and not provide any such funtion for a DSLR.
If I still had mine I would use them.

I have the opportunity to buy a Tokina RMC 300 5.6 for what seems a very good price, approx £35 ($70 at todays rate). Although I am happy with my Pentax M 300 f4 my partner finds it very cumbersome to use (get to the gym and build some muscle, I say). I have no idea of the quality of this lens, and I guess as the price is not going to kill me I should not worry, but has anybody used this one?
I don't want to be left with something that she will not use if it does not have decent IQ.
