Cool!!
Does it happen every time you photograph a bright source of light? some lenses because of the diafragm shape capture bright lights in different shapes... although i've never seen one like that.
Maybe you just captured moment where the combination of sun and clouds made that optical effect (it's probably something like that).

For macro the tamron 90mm is good and has a fine price tag...
Then i think that, unless you do stiched panos, you'll need a couple of lenses to cover each of those needs (macro and landscape)... Depending on what you want to shoot the macro lens you'll need will be a Tele, if you're shooting bugs you'll want at least something like the tammy i mentioned...and while a long lens has got it's usages in landscape, you will probably want a wide angle lens too...the 15 limited is a fine one, you can check examples on it's thread, or the sigma 10-20, or the pentax 12-24...
The zoom you bought ain't no good for macro, but you can use it till you get to see if you need something wider.

Good price indeed...just stick to that lens till you figure out wich focal lenghts youlike the most while you save up for the next one... shoot shoot and shoot and when you're comfortable you can pickup a cheap and good prime like the 35 to see if you like primes...

Congrats on the new camera... That's a really good one, and for the price it's going for this days i would buy one too if i had the juice.
As for the lenses...well it depends on your needs and likes, you can look up lots of threads of different lenses here on the forum and decide.
In pentax i kept just two lenses (i sold the rest when i bought a d800) the tammy 24-70 2,8 and the sigma 8-16..if i had to do it all over again i would definitely buy again the sigma but i would have gone for premium primes, compared to the price of the Nikon system i usually use now those primes have a great price...the FA limiteds have a stellar reputation.

They are different software, serve different purposes...Lightroom is better to organize, it's integration to devellop the images from start to finish. Lightroom's workflow is efficient, the program is powerfull and can produce incredible images BUT it's not a pixel manipulator...
Photoshop offers complete control, it's powerfull, it lets you heal or create an image...just look up some tutorials in Youtube, you'll see what it's capable of really fast.
One thing before comitting a lot of money in software licenses you might want to try the GIMP, it lacks some of the more advanced features of photoshop but it's great to start and see if you like to immerse yourself in that world. I'm just starting out and i really love the possibilities it's opening up and the ideas i'm getting..it just expands what you can do to images, and it feels a lot like painting (wich i do, with sprays, but seldomly lately since it's quite expensive).

Better than doing an automated HDR, wich will look artificial, open the shots as layers in an image processor and do it manually...it'll look much better.
For your particular problem i think you're done...the dynamic range on that camera does not have enough headroom.
Only one solution i can think of: export your image to the GIMP, look for detail in some of the flowers and heal some detail from the flowers that have to those that do not.
Maybe you might want to try a more powerfull, less effects and more geared towards getting everything out of Raws than Darktable...i like it too but i've been reading a lot about PP software and you might want to try Photivo...it's powerfull, not very user friendly but it can handle Raw files really well.

Yep..calling it cheating is just a way to dismiss a very powerfull and empowering tool...it's something that opens up new ways of processing (just as crossprocessing in the darkroom...or all the amazing things some devellopers used to do with masks and enlargers).
Denying PP is like calling cheating to not using available light.
If you're starting to get interested in the possibilities of PP just look at Joey L's portfolio...he is a master both of using flashes AND photoshop. Once you start "cheating" you might get interested and start to look at work of people who push it to incredible places., and start going to digital paintings not only enhancing photos.
I liked the video, the knowledge of brushes and blending modes will let you do very creative things with your work. One advice i didn't see and it's great for starting out: work in layers. Duplicate the base layer and work on the new one that way you can compare and feel your way to the point that pleases you most, when you're over with one adjustement repeat the duplicate...

An obese hypopotamus is lightweight compared to Vista...It's the most bloated, useless, horrible at managing memory OS ever..
because that's what all the hype is about right now...a shame but they'll do whatever they think will sell.
You'll look back when your computer stops getting updates, when the programmed obsolescence forces you to buy a newer computer you don't need because the "old" one isn't suitable for their new version of the OS...Apple is like an illustrated despotism, they try to lock down their hardware and have a devellopment model to force people to make them stinking rich by upgrading perfectly usable hardware for something shiny and new (and lots of times something wich is more than you need).
I'm working on a beautifull aluminum iMac that's starting to be in that position...no more chrome or flash updates, lots of software stops being supported or available since most start to need 10.6 or higher...it's a load of crap but i can't install linux since it ain't mine...hope to get money soon to get me a fine photo monitor for my Arch box that's gathering dust in a corner.
Linux...it's already there for most applications and the rest are steadily coming...in the photo side: You got fine software like photivo for the RAW files (needs a better interface) and GIMP 2.8 is great, most interface and usability problems have been adressed...with the usage of GEGL a nondestructive, up to 32 bits workflow is coming, and other stuff that people need are on their way like a native support of CMYK for the people who print...In fact for lots of this things there are workarounds already, or programs like cinepaint, but having it in Gimp will be a big step forward. now there's.
It's getting here. And those willing to pay for licensed OS will do so out of custom or because of the monopolist practises Microsoft or Apple enforce, since there's a linux distro tailored for almost any need out there and it's only getting better (no corporate screwups there, and loads of choice getting each time easier to install and mantain if your not into geeking:D).

Nice location!, and i like the picture. Only one thing, i think the flare is too big and round and lonely...my lenses usually flare in less perfect patterns and in multiple smaller spots..Not that yours is wrong and probably if you had not said you added i wouldn't have thought so much about how my lenses usually flare.
but back to the point: Cool shot:)

About Dslr's and MILC's well it used to be about sizes and sensor size too, but now you got full-frame MILC's out there, so i would say that the viewfinder and the size/bulk are the main deciding factor.
In my experience Canikon offers more lenses and some cheaper primes but when you go to premium glass their prices are way higher than pentax's. If he's going to stay in the lower gama of lenses then the prices are comparable thanks in part to third party offerings.
He should think in terms of system, wich is difficult when you are starting out, and what kind of photography you want to do. Is it trekking/outdoors? is it birds/wildlife? is it flash photography? is it starting as a hobby or there are intentions of spending more and more time and being more "serious" about it? what's the fields he likes, the type of photography he feels pleased with? is he into very shallow depth of field?
All this questions can help him look at wich brand will offer the more convenient setup...that said he can always do anything in photography with any brand, and there's also a budget concern, how much money is he willing to spend in the particular system?
I think pentax is a great system, it offers very capable bodies at very good price points ( and on "older" bodies, incredible deals! look at the k5 prices right now), once you get really into it premium glass is cheaper than Canikon's, and the gaps the system has are easily filled with third party lenses.
The cons? it's flash sync of 1/160, it's autofocus system, and i think that's it...
So before comiting to a system you should seat down with him and figure out what are his fields of interest and how much money he is willing to put into it IN THE LONG TERM.
If it's just a dslr to explore and see...then pentax is hard to beat...or at least it was when i got my Kx and the alternatives where the 1000d,the d60 or the d3000.

What do you intend to do with it? if it's just a flash to have on camera when it's dark, something automated? then the metz are very good for their price range. If you intend to get into lighting, then go for the cheaper and or older ones (be sure to pick safe voltage ones...like all the older nikon models). The thing is that for that money you can probably get two manual flashes with slave functions like the Nikon's sb-28, wich is a versatile and fun start into strobist kind of approach to flash photography.
My advice would be to figure out how much time are you willing to spend learning, wich usage is the one intended and then decide how to spend your money.
Take a look to strobist.blogspot.com and to the strobist group at flickr...if that is your goal then you are better off spending that money in two capable manual flashguns than in one with p-ttl (wich by the way sucks, and together with the max sync of 1/160 is the only true disadvantage of Pentax).
If it's only to use in auto, play around a while with the on camera flash and see if you will use the flashgun enought to justify it's cost.

It looks like things are on the ascending wave, today i did my first fashion shoot with a model. It was great! And when i talked to her about the look i want to work on she seemed to dig the concept. Now i'll assemble a nice moodboard with phrases, stills from some movies that inspire me, some songs and sketches and i'll send it to her:).
Today wasn't really my style, although i got some pics i'm very happy with, but maybe i'll have a new face soon!
Beginning monday i'll scout vintage stores and small designer stores to see if their willing to lend me clothes in exchange for pics...if not i'll have to find money somewhere since my wardrobe is really limited:D.

That's a fine solution, and you can use the sigma in moderate power outputs as hard-fill. If you want to use as a command flash to make the others go off you don't need to bounce it either, just point to one of the slaves and use something like 1/64 or 1/128, even 1/32 depending on the distance between you and the subject and the power output of the slaves...the flash will see it and at those powers it won't affect the shot, then the other flash might see any of the two and jump. Using optical slave can get tricky in some configurations where you might end up having to do some juggling to ensure there's a chain of sight between the flashes.
I sometimes use that setup, but usually i prefer to use the triggers so i'll have all my lights at hand to put color, iluminate details, etc...not only to set up key and fill lights. But then as i said, when i use that setup, lots of the times, i use the one on camera as fill.
The led video lights usually have a dimmer, and if it's a good one you can even have one that has the correct colour temperature to mix without any fear with flashes. I got one and when used in moderates outputs you won't blind your subjects...in the high outputs you definitely will.
The led video light might be great as it opens up new possibilities, not only for practical reasons but also because you might use it to light the scene too..there are some affordable options out there in all sizes, with barndoors, "gels" to match tungten or fluorescent lights, and other usefull accesories.
Hope you find a comfortable solution that enables you to enjoy more nightime lighting:D.

Yep i really gotta get some more people to play...I already made a profile in MM so i hope i'll be able to convince somebody with one of the ideas i've got running around in my head. And definitely need to find some more clothing (what you can see is most of our wardrobe :D).
Thanks again for the input, and i think i'll try to get a couple more in the theme-ambience with new clothing and lose the fourth as you advice. We haven't exploited the place with the pipes to it's full potential yet, that place is amazing.

Hi, been away for some time, and i kind of missed the mood of this forum...now that i'm here again, well i wanted to show my first attempt at creating something like an editorial shoot.
I've managed to cover some events as a photographer and now i want to try to build up a portfolio with the lighting and techniques i've learned up till now (adding the other part that i lack: postprocessing). This is my first attempt, i might have overdone it with the PP, but i think i have achieved the ambience i was aiming for.
If anyone has critiques, tips, advice i would greatly appreciate it.

Both lights you post might be suited...but have in mind one thing, it'll be cheaper to do it yourself, and in questions of constant light there ain't much things you can't build yourself :) just look the wattage, and the color of the light and then use the same bulbs for every lamp you set.
Kubrick lit Barry Lindon with candle light...and yes he had incredible gear, and yep he had fast lenses, assistants, etc etc but it was still candle light!
Doing movies you can use constant light fairly easy with household lamps...for diffusers you can either buy umbrellas or build softboxes with bleached sheets and clamps to fix them in front of the lights.
The led array ones are great but it can get expensive if you want to create complex lighting.
