Im confused about Flash Compatibility..

Alright:!
I have done my homework and scouted the forum for an answer on this, but none of the answers given actually gives a definite "yes or no". My question is:
  • IS the Hot Shoe - Clip On, flash multi-compatible?

(As in, Multi-brand-compatible)

The reason i ask, is my nightscene job that forces me to hunt down the ideal price/value flash, for about 100-150$ (or 700 Danish Kroners).

In my inventory (played a bit much diablo yesterday) i hold a Pentax K-x and a standard 18-55mm objective. I'm seeking a complimentary optic (like prime 50mm, 1:2), but it is the flash question that bothers me.
Seeing as Both Canon and Nikon, offers a more wide line of flash products, it is hard to confirm that you actually CANNOT take a Canon compatible Sigma 530 DG flash, and put it on top of the Pentax instead.

So .. is it possible? Is it a different fit for the Canon EOS, compared to Pentax's?
Will a Speedlight f.x. also be possible to use with a K-x?

Thanks in advance.
-Thomas

Nightlife: With or W/O flash + appropriate Gear

So, if im right, you guys are saying it's not a matter of "this or that", rather than a "both off/on". I Tried out slow sync flash and high iso values combined with low f/-numbers .. So..
My results were actually not that shabby. Although it still needs the items mentioned above by you guys.
As of exclusivity, is the Flash-component similar to the optics? (With most optics fitting only one camera-model)
and... What protection do i need to get for my gear?

Again - Thanks you guys. I really got a lot from the things you already mentioned .

My new title as a nightlife-photographer has been easy so far. In the beginning i carried my compact camera around, which most of the time is sufficient and takes adequate pictures from clubs etc..
But since i started, my interest for photography has developed into a spare-time hobby, with daily/weekly photographic-trips where i rehearse my techniques.

But.
When carrying a DSLR -- Pentax K-x -- in the same crowded areas, i get more sensitive when it comes to safety:

  • Which gear should i get, for protecting my camera ?

There's also the questions about light. Personally, i feel more comfortable taking pictures with a fast prime and no flash, being that a flash either makes the set unnaturel (due to the extremely dark surroundings and blinding flash), or the external flash that can be held in the other hand to fire a flash in a selective area (which again, would be pretty difficult in a crowded area)
  • What are your thoughts on this subject?

  • And can you recommend either a prime or flash, according to your own experiences?

Oh yeah, and finally: Is there other equipment i should consider looking in to?
My gear is standard-low, with a Pentax K-x, DA 18-55mm f/3,5-5,6 + DA 50-200mm f/4-5,6 + Lens Hood.
That means: No filters, flashes etc. in my current inventory.

Thanks for your support - You guys are the bomb. Glad to be part of the crew.

1)
First of all, thanks for all the input. It is a jungle of different references and terms, so just when mentioning "APC" i constantly confuse it with an armored personal carrier.
So if i get it right, a 35mm lens, is a lens that crop the picture to a far more widening resolution, than a standard camera? (Like a movie perspective?)

2)
About the Tamron 70-210, i read the same recommendation around the net. But then it comes to an even further detail: What is "LD" and "Di" ... And is it worth it to pay 50-75$ more for the "Di" addition?
And is the old "FA 100-300" lenses (f.x. Sigma or Pentax) still worth a shot?

3)

There's another reference i need explained: "Prime" lenses. Is it "prime" in the interpretation that it is old/legendary? Or because its standards/build up is equal to the old lenses?

Yello guys.. !

Let me first of all say: "hi, glad to be a part of this forum"..
I'm a 22-year old guy from Denmark, with a passion for photography. In most eyes probably a very immature young guy, when spending 4/5 of the monthly payment on a camera and a dream.. But then again, why spend your money on food, when all you need is love?

A few months ago i bought my first DSLR, the "mighty" Pentax K-x, which i am more than thankful for.
Since i received "her", i have spent loads of time taking pictures from nightlife scenes and general nature (i admire the vivid colors of blue skies and seasonal forests).

All this was enough for me, until now. I now want to get deeper into the theoretical side of photography, but i must admit, there are a lot of difficult terms and quite meaningless phrases.

So please answer me this:

  • What is a 35mm lense/body? And is it compatible with regular SLR's?

  • Which new lens would you guys recommend, when the criterias are: "Budget of max. 120$" & "Must have at least 200mm zoom"

  • What is the difference between DA and DA* lenses?

  • What defines a "Telephoto" lens?

  • ... And what is all this fuzz about Screwmounts, M-42 mounts and "adapttoall"?

Well-knowing that a 200mm lens is not of the highest quality inside this price range, i would like to practice handling a fast auto-focusing lens, until i finally win the lottery.
Oh yeah.. and those compatible "lens solutions" sound like weapons from WW2..?
Is there a connection?
