K3iii Mono and what lens? Let's geek out

Ok

So, I have had it for a couple months now, but not extensive. I have been swapping lenses every few days.

This one with DA *55. The clarity of this lens I think really comes through on this pic.

I feel like I need to explain a little.

I'm a family doc in a tiny town of 1,066 people. I have a wife and five kids ranging in ages from 3 to 16 years old and my main hobby is taking photos.

I've always awakened early in the morning -- probably dating back to my training days when rounding before the sun came up was the rule and so before they wake up, I go out and try to capture the sunrise and whatever color there is.

For me, the photograph is the goal, but the real pleasure is in the journey. Being outside early in the morning, smelling the freshly mown hay, or hearing the birds beginning to wake up, is enough for me, even if the photos don't turn out.

Then, I inflict them on the people here on the Forum. I've never sold any photos and probably never will, but it still is a very fun hobby that continues to give me pleasure after years of doing it.

Auto-focus fine adjustment issue?

About every lens that I've had required some degree of adjustment on any >6MP Pentax-camera I've used.

My ex-K-1 required the most adjustment (for backfocus) My K3iiiM is the closest to good focus from my sample of cameras, and only needs a slight front-focus adjustment on most lenses.

In addition, some lenses are more out-of-spec than others.

But given the quite broad tolerances that Pentax apparently deems acceptable on its cameras and lenses, I'm not surprised that nearly every lens/cam-combination will require the fine-adjustment. However, I am surprised Pentax still lingers on to this early-2000s method for focus fine-tuning.

No, dairy is correct. The camera is in milk white, special processing gives us creamy bokeh, and the camera weighs the same as a pack of butter.*

Got it!

My first impression: wow! the first look through the viewfinder was very impressive, I only knew my good old K5 as an APSC and that's quite a difference. Now I have to read the instructions and to learn the camera. I have already noticed two things:

1. sRGB and Adobe RGB can be selected as the color space, both are color spaces for color photos.

2. Pentax DCU 5 shows a PEF in the browser but not in the lab. The PEF can be edited with Affinity Photo, even a white balance is possible but pointless because it colors the B&W image. It can not be edited in CaptureOne 22pro, may be in a newer version.

Rafwall,

My assumption (99%sure I’m right) is you would do it like we did back in the film days you will add a color filter to the lens at the time you take the picture.

Adding a red/green/yellow/blue filter does the same thing as desaturating the image and then selecting one of those color channels.

I shoot with M10, and mostly in B and W. Naturally, I am having to convert my files from color to b and w, and to be honest - I really can't tell the difference in appearance between color files converted to b and w and monochrome files (although I don't own Leica mono of any generations but looking at someone else's mono files). For me the tedious nature of converting color to b and w is almost enough to want to reach out for Leica M10 or even M11 mono. But at the price point of over 10K, I just don't want to. Here comes K3iii mono at this price point and it is enough for me to literally fall off the chair. The thought of being able to use my Pentax lenses to shoot monochrome and not having to convert files is almost too good to be true.

Initial Reaction: K-3 III

I'm patiently sitting here watching my K-3 III charge.
Figured I'd talk about my short time using it with the battery's pre-charge.

Initial Reaction:
The gui is very different than any previous Pentax I've used.
Funny - seems like a put-off at first (have to learn new muscle memory), but having the new learning curve is exciting at the same time.
But some of the menus seem very basic in appearance and very minimalistic.

The build design is very different.
Not only is the grip incredibly refreshing and comfortable (especially compared to my K-70), the aesthetics are also very different.
The pentaprism overhang is substantially different and minimalistic compared to previous models. But hey - it substantially decreases the apparent width of the body and it looks great!
I may consider that the reduced overhang a welcome feature from the Pentax designers because of previous issues with third-party lens issues (Sigma's scratching the K-1).

The eye-cup is all new and larger. I'm a bit worried that I will wear it out because I continuously pull my camera outta a coat pocket and think this bigger cap may see increased wear.
Only time will tell! Maybe it will be fine :)

The shutter feels substantially different (not only in burst rate) but the leaf-shutter is such a joy to use - coming from the K-70/K-5 this thing is just so impressive!
With my UHS-II SD cards and taking a couple bursts - I know that neither buffer nor clear will be an issue for my photography.

What's very apparent, and what will be the biggest learning curve for me, is how to master the new AF system.
I was very comfortable with focus-recompose with my previous cameras, and the tracking was nothing I depended on.
But this camera is a new beast clearly and the joystick/settings are altogether new in this area.
I can't wait to see what this thing can do.

Silly snap shots, indoors with poor lighting, look more interesting and capable.
Outdoor shots have huge dynamic range capturing lots of highlights.

I've only ever held K-3 and K-1 a couple times before this K-3 III, and never really learned the gui and handling of those cameras, but to jump from the K-70/K-5 to this camera is just incredible.

And trees are just about in bud flush! So glad this arrive in time for summer!
This is going to be an awesome weekend!

The abundance of extremely clever people going around with their 2-bit sarcasm telling others they are fools for investing or working in cryptocurrency never cease to surprise me. True genius, congratulations.

Me, I am very sorry for not have been one of those fools who got into Bitcoin a few years back, I would have made millions out of my foolishness. Unfortunately, I was one of the "clever" ones :D Lesson learned, contrarily to others who persist in their "cleverness".

On a general note, I am always open to discuss anything with civil people expressing their opinions in a respectful and civilised manner. On the other hand, I have enough of a certain breed of sarcastic, rude people - to each their own, but I have nothing to say to them, sorry. You, Astro-Baby, are one of them.

Best regards,

Vieri

Yep, and until everyone, including the scaredy-cats who are quaking in fear and are hiding under their beds from syringe bearing health care professionals, puts on their big person pants and develop a little bit of common sense and courage, this pandemic will continue to be with us.
The only saving grace is that eventually the vaccine refusers will come face to face with the disease, with the distinct possibility of being removed from the gene pool and increasing herd intelligence in the process.

I was a guinea pig - for the vaccine developed by someone named Jonas Salk.
This vaccine has already received short-range testing.
I know people who were infected by a son coming home from college - and the wife and their older daughter were still {the last time I heard} dealing with "long haul" effects - things like uneven heart beat.
Personally, I would rather 'take a chance' on the vaccine.

A brief quick comment about AF Fine Adjust regarding the prior post (#9): The Video regarding Nikon Learn & Explore is excellent in being professionally 'concise' and 'informative' in providing guidance for how to perform af fine adjustment !

The manual technique presented in the video is essentially the same as what Ricoh-Pentax has officially posted here:

[To the moderators: I would recommend placing the links to these two resources (Ricoh-Pentax info) and (Nikon Learn & Explore Video) in an appropriate place with in the forum e.g. sickies or help or how to area.]

Been watching them for a few weeks now. Pretty fascinating stuff that really draws you in. Some feeds have comments and lots of videos posted. Amazing how many people are wandering around the very edges of the lava flow. Some whole families. It is estimated that some 30% of the population of Iceland has been there.

Of special mention is BOBCAM2. A remote camera that like the Centurion in Pompeii stood to his post to the bitter end. (BOB is the unofficial name of the first cone. Short for Blasting out Basalt)

Two new fractures and 4 cones opened up today. Here is a link to one of the cams.

Spain, Germany, Italy and France have paused AZ jabs while investigating a handful of thrombosis cases - better safe than sorry and incidence is approximately 1 per 200 thousand shots so it's not really a concern compared to the alternative, but I'm afraid it will just give some elements of society fresh ammunition.

CEO of Ricoh (the mother ship) talks about the future of PENTAX and GR

There isn't much more revenue to be obtained from simply making more cameras, I'd guess. That applies to all the current players. The market is unlikely to grow at all and will probably consolidate around just a few higher-end items from a smaller number of brands, although video (which Pentax isn't in) will likely expand. I'd guess Ricoh are looking for ways to leverage their patents and expertise in ventures in other fields of whatever kind, or license things that can be used under other brand names, etc. The imaging field is wide, far beyond just classic photography though whatever agreement Ricoh have with Hoya might limit what can be done. That might provide some extra revenue and expand the field of operations. In the meantime, Pentax can continue to make their DSLR cameras. It's hard to see where else they have to go with that. There are very few players left now and fewer options than there were. Things are pretty well set. I think Pentax have missed a trick with not doing more on medium format, though. Anyway, I don't think the head of Ricoh was talking about doing deals with other camera companies particularly but about a wider pan-industrial view of things that might need imaging expertise.

CEO of Ricoh (the mother ship) talks about the future of PENTAX and GR

There was an investor meeting of Ricoh Co. Ltd. (the mother ship, not the company that makes your camera, that's Ricoh Imaging Co. Ltd.) on Mar 3 2021. Ricoh as a group is a big business, consumer camera is just a tiny part of that. In the previous meeting (Nov 2020) Ricoh laid out a plan to become "digital service" company targeting other businesses, they continued the theme this time, but president/CEO Yamashita also talked a bit about the future of Pentax and GR.

To summarize: He expressed his (or Ricoh's) willingness to make PENTAX and GR continue for future as a valuable business. He said that they "will start searching for a way" to do it, that in doing so they hope they can work with outside partner(s). Later, when asked about accepting outside investment VS selling camera business, he said that they're willing to work with partners if necessary and are willing to invest, OTOH they won't be able to "fulfill responsibilities" (to make the brands continue) if they just sell the brands and therefore they need to think long and hard.

He chose words to convey his sense that it's their job to make sure that the heritage goes on, mentioning enthusiastic fans as the reason why he feels that way. OTOH, he signaled that the way Ricoh Imaging operates under Ricoh as of now cannot continue forever though he didn't make any definitive statements and certainly he didn't give any time scale.

You can stop right here unless you're really interested.

Below are English and Japanese version of the presentation. Relevant part is on page 9, but the sentence about SV (Smart Vision) doesn't make sense because the Japanese sentence wasn't great to start with. What does "integrate cameras (PENTAX and GR) into Ricoh Imaging" mean when Ricoh owns these brands anyway?
https://www.ricoh.com/-/Media/Ricoh/Sites/com/IR/data/pre/pdf/ir_pre2020.pdf (English)
https://jp.ricoh.com/-/Media/Ricoh/Sites/jp_ricoh/IR/events/2020/pdf/r02_keiei.pdf (Japanese)

Redacted transcript (which seems to be only available in Japanese) is better.

Written at the bottom is about SV business. As for consumer cameras like PENTAX and GR, we'll start searching for a way to make them continue as a valuable business for future by integrating (business?) functions into Ricoh Imaging. We hope to be able to proceed with a help from outside parties. OTOH, 360 degrees camera and its optical technologies are essential for a digital service company, so we'll keep pushing that.

After the talk there was a Q&A, which was also published by Ricoh but it's a bit sanitized (Japanese, https://jp.ricoh.com/-/Media/Ricoh/Sites/jp_ricoh/IR/events/2020/pdf/presentation_qa_2020.pdf). You should read Impress Cloud Watch's report instead (again in Japanese):

QuoteQuote:

President Yamashita said: "Camera business was competing by volume, making and selling large numbers. However, while taking care of GR and Pentax, I myself felt/appreciated that customers using our products are people who love the brand, or enthusiasts I might say, we don't sell our models in large numbers but we have fans. Because of this, we're thinking about how to make (the brands) continue for the future. If others share the same vision (of making these brands continue for the future) we're willing to work with them if necessary, and we are willing to invest if necessary. OTOH, if we just sell it, we cannot make sure that our responsibility (to continue the brand) will be fulfilled. We have to think long and hard.

Let's see how it goes.

Ricoh Imaging has uploaded most of the online seminars to Youtube.

They don't have subtitles, but you can use the Youtube auto translate function to get some idea of what they are talking about, or just for comic effect.

To access them, look on this page and click the newly added red buttons below the photographs of the speakers.

Strangely the one that is missing is the one about the J-Limited. I'm not sure why that is.

If you want to see the part about the DA* 16-50, go to the last 10-15 minutes of the Iwasaki/Ikenaga presentation.

For information about the K-3 III, the Takashiro/Tanaka discussion may be of interest.

The presentation by Yoshiaki Kobayashi contains a lot of images he shot with the K-3 III and is nice if you like snowy landscapes.

It takes time for raw processors like Adobe and Capture One to recognise a new camera. Often there’s no work around but because it’s the same sensor as the original GFX100, you can use an exif editor to change the camera name in this case to the GFX 100 and then import the files into Lightroom etc from the efix editor.
