Heh, well, I suppose that could be the case... I'd like to give the repair shop the benefit of the doubt, especially since I just mailed the camera to them again.
I think they must've done something, as the line was in a different place before the repair than it was after. But aside from that, it was very consistent - all the photos from "before" have it in a consistent place. In the shots from "after" it's equally consistent, but in a different place.

I've shot a total of maybe 2 minutes of video with it. I use Live View a fair bit for focusing when on the tripod, but I don't think excessively so. I'm not terribly in love with the LCD. :)

Yeah, I'm sending it in for repair today. I was mostly curious if anyone else had seen it. Also, now it's out there on the intertubes in case someone in the future runs into the same problem.

It was the v1.10 firmware, which is still the latest. I jumped on that as soon as I could, because I like using the electronic level and being able to see the exposure meter at the same time.

I'm 99% sure they're on different cards. I rotate through five separate 2GB cards, and I have examples spanning months, so it would be pretty surprising if they were all on the same card.
I think it is a bad sensor - last time I sent it in for repair they replaced the sensor. It just seems really odd that I would get two sensors defective in the exact same way, hence I'm wondering if anyone else has seen something like this.
Hm, perhaps there's some fault in the support electronics that fry the sensor after a while?

I'm getting ready to send back my second K-7 since this spring due to magenta lines showing up in the photos. I'm pretty sure it's a defective sensor. Has anyone else seen this kind of problem, am I just incredibly unlucky, or am I doing something wrong/stupid here?
I've got a few samples. These are chosen to emphasize the problem, so they're ISO1600+ and pushed in Lightroom. But I've seen it down to ISO400. Clickthrough for larger on all of them.
This is a sample from my first sensor:
Here are a few more from my replacement sensor.
Note the vertical line about 1/4 in from the left side of the frame. This is an uncropped shot. The line is always in that same place, but the other shots are cropped.
This is a cropped shot - the line is horizontal a bit below the centerline.
Wide horizontal band. Look across the bottom of her coat.
This one's a bit hard to see here, but it's a horizontal line. It's most visible a bit up and left from the centerpoint. |

FWIW, I've never seen green banding, but I have seen some magenta banding. I got my K7 early this year - in May I had it into the service center to replace the sensor. It was fine for a few months, but I just noticed that my new sensor has been doing the same thing since roughly August. Argh.

One of the things I noticed in the K-5 release is that the RAW button is user programmable. I never, ever use the RAW button so I think I might like to use that feature, but I haven't noticed any way to do that on my K-7. Does anyone know if reprogramming the RAW button is possible on the K-7 and if so how?
Otherwise that would be a great firmware update...

The Mike's Camera down in Park Meadows had some Pentax gear, though they stopped carrying it at the Colorado store so they may stopped in Park Meadows as well. They have a tent sale in Boulder this weekend.
Other than that, your best bet may be to find out where Ned Bunnell's house is. I'm guessing he's got a nice selection of Pentax gear. :)

Oh right, I got it confused with the 488. My mistake, sorry. Anyway, good luck with the sale.

Isn't the big knob/lever on the side for panning? Or do you mean something else when you say "panning adjustments"?
I've got one of these too, I'm just curious if I'm missing something. Also, you may give some potential buyer the mistaken impression that there's no panning at all with this head.

Interesting stuff Dave, thanks for running the test.
BTW, if you want to run some more I've got 3 different 28's that you don't have listed (M28/2.8, Vivitar 28/2.5-m42, and Sigma 28/28 Miniwide II). I live in downtown Denver so no need to ship them.
Or not :)

I just picked up a K7 (thanks Amazon 1-day sale!). I've been messing around with the composition adjustment feature, and finding it really annoying that it's buried down in the menus. Is there any sort of shortcut to activate it with needed 27 key presses?
Thanks in advance,
BKR

I'm going to echo the other guys - I think it's great too, with one caveat. The fire looks kinda grey and dull, which bugs the heck out of me. It looks like maybe the tone curve is flat or inverted at some point.
We all have one caveat... it's just a different one from each of us. :)

I just picked up an m42 mount SuperTak 200/4. It seems to be in generally good condition except for one thing. When focusing to infinity there's a bit of resistance just before infinity. When the focus is set there, the aperture doesn't work right. It will either not stop down, or it will only stop down part way. This happens in both Auto mode using the pin, or in Manual mode just turning the aperture ring.
It seems like maybe something is a bit jammed up in the mechanism. It's a nice lens so I'd like to get it fixed if it makes any sense to do so.
Is this a common problem? Is there a fix? Is it worth sending it to someone for servicing?
Thanks in advance,
BKR

Yes she is. I was wondering why she held the camera that way - I guess I should've known. :)

I actually use both, for different purposes.
I love the sync and sharing in Dropbox, but the low storage caps make it an iffy backup solution.
Mozy has none of the coolness. On the other hand, I currently have over 425GB backed up on Mozy. I'd need a whole lot of Dropbox accounts for that. :)
You could also get a Smugmug account for backup - they even take RAW files these days. That started after I got my Mozy account, so I haven't used it.

Corey,
I like the idea here, but I'm having a very hard time seeing the man's head. It's almost the same tone as the background. Then again, I'm in a bright environment on an uncalibrated monitor, so it may just be my problem.
I think the crop on the first one is definitely the best, because it gets rid of the distractingly bright wristband. Other than that, I like them all about equally.

My mother and grandmother visited Colorado to see the gold aspens in fall. We got a shot of all of us together - that's me on the left with my K10, then mom with an ME Super, and grandma on the right with her LX. Thought you guys might get a kick out of it. :)
Here another one of Mom in action, just cuz I think they're cool. That compact is also a Pentax - I believe it's an Optio 60. |

You should probably specify whether it's the f4-5.6 version, or the f3.5 version. Based on the price, I'd imagine the former. It's a great lens, and I'd buy it if I didn't already have one. :)
Anyway, good luck with the sale.
