Kids Soccer - lens options?

I have shot two years of my granddaughters soccer with an olderTamron 70-300. Using my DL it did a fine job if I did my part. Keep in mind I'm not expecting the world from it. I got several good shots of her and the pictures I printed out for her teammates parents were well recieved. My ratio of keepers was low, but who cares, SD cards are cheap.

I think that as small as the field is for 5 year olds, and no faster than they move up and down the field, your 50-200 should do fine. I would certianly try it for a couple of games before I spent the money on another lens, unless of course you are wanting to get a new lens.
Shooting from the sidelines will get you close, shooting from behind the goals will provide better angles for the action. If shooting from behind the goals, you can't cheer for your team, that's considered coaching, no kidding. The very best 'people' shots I got came after the game, win or lose, the players are still pumped up and emotions come to the surface easier(not that 11 and 12 year old girls usually are lacking in public display of emotions) and are less aware of the camera. The very best team shot I ever got was at a pregame meeting with the refs, so have your camera ready, you can also get on the field then.
Good luck, have fun and take plenty of water

David,
I have basicily a useless left eye, I never got used to haveing to use it, but I can appricate the adapting you are having to do. I just steped up to a K10 from a DL and the shake reduction is a big help, hopefully you will find it helpfull also when you get the K100. You might also consider a walmart monopod, I can also see one of those in my future.

I find your attitude wonderful and wish you only the best. As far as photos go, you are well on your way.
Best Wishes
Frank

I also just got a K10D and it was at Ver 1.00. I did the upgrade to 1.3 and it was really no problem. Make sure your battery is fully charged and forllow the directions on the Pentax web site.

Now that we have spent all your money on lenses, don't forget memory card(s)and software to process the pictures you will be taking. I use photoshop elements but others use other software and are happy with it. Another thing you might think about is how you are going to originze you pictures on your computer. You will be amazed at how quickly they accumulate, and if you don't have them originazed in some fashon, you will lose them. Or at least spend way too much time looking for them.
Have fun with your new camera and lenses. They will expand your horizons if you are used to a p&s.
Good Luck
Frank

What a pretty scene, you managed to convey it's charm well. I agree with Clarence, the floats are the center of attention in the picture, but they aren't the subject.

Jake looks like one happy dog, great capture. The squirrel looks like he might be worried about Jake.

Great shots all, but No. 4 is special. Also like the DOF on the squirrel, it seems to make a mundane shot eyecatching. Congrats on the K10, but you don't really need it, you do just fine without.

It's amazing how well insulated they are, the snow isn't melting off the bucks back. Also, from the broken tine on your bucks antlers there is probably another buck in there somewhere.
Great captures, what lens were you using?

That said, it takes fine pictures and seems to function ok. Probably not an issue, other than it feels strange.
Good Luck

Another shooter here. Steve covered the basics and he gives good advice. The only thing I would add comes from shooting a handgun instead of a rifle, but it holds true for any activity where you need to steady an object you are holding.
Practice, practice, and practice some more.
Your body 'learns' by repetition and I think if you develop a basic stance and then repeat it over and over and over you will notice a definite improvement in your stability. This needs to be concentrated practice to do the most good. Think each step through and concentrate, you might be pleasently surprised, I hope so.
To give you an idea of how your body learns, NOVA had a show years ago that had a segment on shooting a .22 target rifle by a member of a college rifle team. This guy had been shooting for years using the same stance, the same procedure for every shot. They did an EKG on him as he went through his practice and discovered his heart stopped beating just as he pulled the trigger. Every time. Your body can learn.
Best of luck.

I live in Tuttle, OK and work in Oklahoma City as a mechanic. I recently reentered SLR photography with the purchase of a DL. Another refugee from DPreview(shooter3), although I will still go back to read some.
