Sony NEX body/adaptor selection

Wow. I never expected to find someone using the same gear...that lens isn't exactly common!

Sounds like Rainbow makes the adapter I need, then. I didn't see it on Amazon, so I guess I'll go directly to the vendor's website (gasp!) and look. You don't use the VS much with the 5-N, then...but would you feel comfortable mounting it to the Rainbow adapter on a tripod, with the adapter supporting the weight of the lens?

For me, the smaller size of the 5-N doesn't factor in at all, and I'd be happy if it were five times bigger. :P I only want a way to use C/Y lenses without slogging through the film workflow every time. Still, the small size of the 5-N plus the C/Y 45/2.8 will be pretty convenient for bringing along to casual outings.

After further research, I've decided to go with the 5-N. Wi-fi and apps are cool, but not critical, and it sounds like the wi-fi implementation on the 5R is pretty crappy anyway.

Since you mention tripod use, I'm wondering if you might have any suggestions for me. I use an RRS ballhead, and I have an old plate which I think will directly mount the 5-N. This will be fine for the tiny pancake lens I will use frequently. But I have a C/Y Vario-Sonnar 28-85 which would definitely be too heavy for that setup. Looking at the lens, I'm thinking there's no way a tripod collar of any sort can be used, so I will be looking for a way to mount my adapter to the tripod plate.

I ordered the RainbowImaging basic C/Y adapter. They don't seem to make one with a tripod mount. Fotodiox does, but it gets poor reviews, specifically for the tripod mount. Novoflex has what appears to be the sweet setup: I can buy their C/Y to NEX adapter, and then also buy their tripod collar specifically designed to fit that adapter. The downside to that awesome combo is the price: combined, about $250. That seems a little ridiculous, but I guess as someone who has paid for RRS gear I can't protest too vigorously. I'll probably eventually cough up the cash for that...unless someone has a less expensive but still viable alternative?

Thanks so much for that info, that helps a lot. I'm not overly excited about a touch screen, but the EVF will be important, when I can afford to add it. So I think I need at least a 5-N. Now I'm also looking at the 5-R. I'm not seeing any differences that would be deal=breakers for the 5N, but the better controls and the wireless would be pretty sweet.

Hey all, I've not posted here in a loong time, as work has been keeping me busy. I haven't bought new gear in forever, and have paid so little attention to the latest developments that I'm basically a n00b again. I've had vague knowledge that the micro 4/3 format exists, but have not even briefly ogled any of these little guys, and I need some advice.

I frequently bemoan the fact that my best Contax/Zeiss lenses cannot be used on any of my digital cameras, and I think it's time to do something about it. A quick look around gives me the impression that the most cost-effective way to mount C/Y lenses to a digital body would be to pick up a Sony NEX. But I wanted to get some opinions before I pulled the trigger on one.

The NEX 3 is very attractive, because it's dirt cheap. So that's one possibility.

The NEX 5-N looks better. A little more money, but supposedly it's a real improvement in image quality. More importantly, it has focus-peaking, which the NEX 3 does not. I'm fairly adept at manual focus with telephoto lenses and a real finder, but I'm guessing that with a 45mm lens (what I would use most often on this prospective new body), the focus-peaking might be important for my accuracy.

I know there are even newer models, but I'm thinking $500 or so will be the spending cap right now. Am I right in thinking NEX, or are there other body possibilities I should consider?

Another consideration, and further questions, regarding adaptors: What's most important to me is a basic C/Y to NEX (or whatever) adaptor that doesn't affect infinity focus or image quality. I see some that are $10, and some that are a lot more than that. I assume there will be practical differences between the cheap ones and the expensive ones, but I don't know what those will be. Which one would you recommend? There is apparently a tilt adaptor, which seems like it might be a lot of fun…if I got that, it could act as my standard adaptor, too, correct? I've also got some Contax G lenses. I'm not going to be able to afford that adaptor initially, but I know I'll want it in the future.

Any advice or experience you'd care to post will be most helpful. Thanks!

Rob, thanks again. The expanding list of minor conveniences are definitely worth the small price of the OS, if I don't give myself huge headaches. It's the headache part I've been worrying about!

Thanks, that's another perspective, and one which I've sort of had for a while. I hate Adobe, and am in no hurry to give them more money. Getting by nicely on CS4.

You're right, there's nothing in Mountain Lion I absolutely need, but there would be some small conveniences. I'm increasingly running into apps that require 10.7+, or at least have features that require it. I have all my own cloud stuff setup with Amazon S3, but a few apps I use on iPad, and a couple on my desktop could benefit from a smoother workflow if I did the Apple cloud thingy.

Thanks for the reply, Rob. I'm certainly not contemplating the upgrade for any specific performance advantage or feature, but I just don't want to fall too far behind, and I do use an iPad extensively. There are a few apps with cloud services that will be convenient for me if I do the upgrade. Sounds like I should be OK, though.....ugh....I don't have time for this right now, LOL.

OS X help! Upgrade?

Hello, I'm hoping I can find some people who are on Macs and stay well-updated on current software versions, compatibility, etc. I'm basically competent with computers, but I don't do all the latest upgrades. In many cases it's because I'm lazy, but with an Operating System, I'm also scared. I'm a professional, so I'm always worried about epic workflow interruptions. When OS X Lion came out, I decided, as usual, not to upgrade right away, and to wait until everything looked "safe." From that point I got busier and busier, and just forgot about it. Now that I'm seeing all the hubbub about Mountain Lion, I realize I've skipped an entire OS release, and it's probably time I bring myself current. I'm on OSX 10.6.8 (last Snow Leopard release) right now.

My biggest concerns are my relatively old versions of Photoshop (CS4) and Lightroom (3.6).

Is upgrading to the new release of Mountain Lion going to be easy, or is it going to kill me?

I'm always seeing old photogaphs (70s, 80s) that I love, and wondering about the gear. Some famous photogs are well-known for the gear they used, i.e. McCurry w/ Kodachrome and the Nikkor 105/2.5. But I wonder if there are any websites that compile such information, or any way at all to find out what film, and possibly what lenses were used for certain iconic shots.

I don't have a good scanner either...just the Epson V500. I've been looking at one of those PlusTek things, but can't really justify the expense right now. My scans are crap, but if I do them at 2400 dpi and downsize for the web, they look half decent.

Parts for PZ-1p

Personally, I'd just find some thin plastic and cut it to fit (with a Dremel tool, for example). I don't know of any place where you could get real parts, but I see the cameras selling cheap on eBay occasionally, for parts. Last weekend I actually saw a fully working PZ-1 sell for $53.

Help for a B&W film newbie

I'm petty much a beginner, too....shot my first rolls maybe a year ago, and I have been doing all my own B/W developing with Rodinal (R09). The results are great. Not sure if it's available in your country, but you should find out. It doesn't go bad, it's cheap, and you really have to try hard to screw it up it seems. Temperature seems not to even matter, within reason. Check out my film blog in my sig....pretty much any black and white on that site was done in R09.

All I need to get B/W negs that I'm happy with is R09, some fixer, and a tank and reels. I use tap water. No stop bath. I was using a wetting agent for a while, but I no longer do after noticing that when I didn't use it, I no longer had lots of dust to remove from my scans. I plan to try some other developers, but R09 just works for me, every time. I even did some color film with it recently!

I personally prefer the metal tanks with Hewes reels. The tanks don't leak, and Hewes reels are reeally easy to load. I tried plastic ones first, but they seemed to deteriorate and the film started hanging up in them, so I got metal, and I'm very glad I did.

C-41 film processed in Rodinal

You know what's weird? A few of the frames, the scans were essentially orange. But for most, it interpreted black and white points both as being way to the left of the actial histogram data...and when I dragged them over, the pics were blue. I just left them, but basically, I'm clueless about scanning.

I've turned down a job to photograph a Newt Gingrich fundraising event.

I've turned down a job to do a topless (but "nothing showing") shot of a 17-year-old girl (it was mom's request, but...no).

I've refused to do selective color on a photo (though I have done it a few times, grudgingly).

I turned down a very high offer to do a wedding for some rich people. Not because they were rich; because it was a wedding.

Just to give you some idea....

Adam, this looked like a typical merchant-sponsored ad to me, but these things are complicated, and I'll confess I don't know exactly how the ads are generated. I included a screenshot in my email to Henry. Thanks.

Sponsored price link inaccurate

I've had my eye on a digital audio recorder for a while at B&H. It's advertised in Google's sponsored links as $229. When I go to B&H, the price is $249.99, but when I added it to my cart, it reflected the lower price, so all was good. Finally, this morning, I was ready to buy it, but the price in the cart was back up. The sponsored link for the lower price is still showing in a Google search, but apparently that lower price is no longer available. I messaged the sales dept. and the reply was "we don't honor price links."

Which begs the question: why are you paying for the links in the first place? Is it just to randomly annoy people, or to help reduce your chances of selling the item? Both, maybe?
