Backpacking on the Black Forest Trail. Slate Run, PA
After dark, at this same spot - I had to stare down a Black Bear who was following the creek down to the village below (presumably to raid picnic baskets or trash bins).

You can rent, if you're not sure. But I would recommend a good flash and diffuser, if you don't have one. I'm no pro, so take that with a grain of salt.
I have also recently upgraded from K-x to K-50. I'm happy so far... :)

I use an Ultrapod II strapped to one of the Trekking poles I am already carrying. I'm not a fan of the ball mount it uses, but it works and adds very little weight.
Mine is Minolta branded, so I only paid about ten bucks for it at someone's clearance sale.

Doing well, thanks. I had a nasty crash last Jan that had me in the hospital twice. So, for the most part, I took a year off. But I'm riding again this year.
I made the move to digital last year (Kx). It was something I had been planning to do for a while, but two rolls of wasted film (stuck aperture lever on one of my lenses) in conjunction with limited developing options really made me want to do it immediately. I still suck at photography.
I think you've got most of the focal ranges I would want to see covered with some old-school primes. If you were thinking of moving to a DSLR, you might want to invest in k-mount lenses (not because you have to, because it's easier/quicker). M-series would be perfect for the K1000, but A-series would be a better transition lens (IMHO). What you want to shoot will dictate what you'll shop for.
Best wishes, and don't forget to share your photos. Here and/or the jet-ski forum.

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing Item for Sale
Super-Takumar 300mm f4 Asking Price
$200USD Item Location
Central Pennsylvania Item Description
Glass is excellent, but has the usual dust for a lens of it's age. It does not contrast from the image quality. The only marks on the exterior of the lens is on the bottom of the tripod mount.
This lens has an excellent reputation. The focus is smooth, as is the aperture. The blades are clean and oil-free.
Includes original case (in damaged, but usable condition) along with front and rear caps.
This is an m42 lens, which requires an adapter for modern cameras. Additionally, on cameras with a front protrusion (like a pop-up flash), the tripod mount must also be loosened so that the lens can screw on. It's not a problem if you don't change lenses too frequently. This could be a deal-breaker for some, though.
Here are some sample shots from this lens. I took them on my Kx and did not post process them in any way except to reduce the size for upload purposes. Are you the original owner of the item being sold?

Super-Takumar 55mm f1.8 Asking Price
$45USD Item Location
Central Pennsylvania Item Description
This is a well used lens , but cosmetically good condition. It has the usual dust for it's age. Aperture blades are clean and the mechanism is smooth.
It comes with a leather case in excellent condition (marked for a 35mm lens - it fits :)), the metal lens cap as well as a plastic end cap.

I'm pretty sure this is ISO800 film that someone gave me. I shot it at the beach last summer and thought this looked much better in B&W |

At night, take the NiMH batteries out, wrap them with a rubber band and put them in a ziplock bag. Then bring the ziplock bag in your sleeping bag with you. If you have a spare set with you keep them in your pocket when not in the camera.
I did that backpacking in the low 20's last weekend. The camera and lenses just stayed in the camera bag.
I did have lithiums along as backup.

I have this same flash for my k1000. I can scan the user manual (pamphlet, actually), if you would like it.
Nice find on a nice camera, by the way.

No, I didn't save the parts. But twelve bucks is not a big investment my any means. :)
Thanks, everyone, for the timely and useful responses :) I did learn something today!

In the foreground on the left is the hole where the necessary pin was mistakenly removed.
I believe the one in the background is the hole that lines up with the autofocus screw and was properly removed.

Thanks!
Apparently, I botched the job when I altered the lens. I also have a 50mm auto aperture lens and I did not detect any pin on that (most likely, this was because the ring wasn't in an 'A' position at the time. So, to eliminate any chance of a stuck lens, I removed both pins!
Crap. $12 down the tubes :(

The lens is this:
I bought it a few months ago and used it successfully on my K1000. More recently, I modified it to remove the 'Rikoh Pin'. Once again, it seemed to function fine on the K1000.
When I put it on my K-x, it is not recognized as an auto aperture lens. As far as I can tell, the aperture ring is fully locked in the 'A' position. Also, the diaphragm arm moves freely and rotates fully to a mechanical stop.
:hmm: Either I'm not doing something correctly, or something is physically out of alignment with the lens. How is an "auto aperture" lens detected by the camera, anyway?
Thanks in advance for your consideration.

I took my K-x backpacking last weekend (slackpacking might be a better term). Lows were below freezing. I had no trouble at all with camera or battery life.
I put two sets of AA rechargeable batteries in a plastic bag and put them in my sleeping bag at night. I wrapped a rubber band around them to eliminate any chance of them assembling a circuit on their own.
Once or twice a lens would fog up on the outside after I removed it's cap. This would dissipate on it's own after a few minutes.

Everything they sold, I believe. :hmm:
From shotguns made by Winchester to Outboard motors made by Eska (and others) to kitchen appliances by Whirlpool. Even today, lawn equipment made by MTD and others.
If I recall correctly, the manufacturer of a Sears branded item can be identified by the prefix of the Sears model number. This seems like a comprehensive list.
