Erik: Now this is a really sharp shot and shows what the K5 is capable of. I can count the dust particles on your Olympus camera. Great test!

Ronald I have the same setup you do and I really like it also.
Your shots came out very well! Great close up of the bug. You are taking some sharp shots with your kit.

You are correct about exposure NaCl. I learned something I will share with you.
I have been photographing for quite some time, but not with this new digital equipment for very long. To have the ability with my K10 to bracket pictures so easily is a new experience for me.
That is what I do now, use the three picture bracket and I usually get a keeper. My K10 likes to under expose about 1/3 stop EV. So I set the camera on +1/3 EV and I get 0 EV +1/3 EV and + 2/3 EV. But the surprising thing is how much difference it makes to move just a little and you will change the exposure a lot. Also how much difference the color and texture of the subject contribute to the exposure. So I am slowly learning how to be a little better at my photography.

I have noticed some dirt on my viewing screen. Can not blow it off with lens removed, so it must be under the screen between it and the viewfinder.
I just live with it. Other than that it is much brighter than my old manual Pentax SLR SV

Oh yes I should mention that I cropped the original shot by at least 20% to 30% to get this picture. So always keep in mind that if you are like me and do quite a bit of cropping then get as sharp a shot as you can.
Even at 377mm small animals, at any distance, will require some cropping.

Interesting time. I just shot some pictures with my K10 and new Tamron 18-250mm lens at stationary targets. These were at the long end of my lens. Remember at 250mm on the K10, or any APS C sensor, I was shooting at something close to 400mm. So the old rule of "same shunter speed as focal length" still applies. Also if you are shakey as I am with handheld shots, then shorter shutter speeds are nessary even with our much loved shake reduction system working.
I just shot a squirrel in a tree out in front of my house. It is an over cast day, there was shade and I had to shoot at 800 ISO to get any shutter speed. I was shooting at f8 to get some DOF but I was only able to shoot at 1/100 sec. So using the two stop guess, regarding the Pentax shake reduction system, I was shooting at about two stops better, or 1/400 sec. Needless to say my shot is not the most sharp if one wants to pixle peep.
If this little guy had been moving.....forget about it!!
I always use center AF and metering. I use only AF.S.

I only use center focus on my K10. It is just easer for me to leave the camera in center focus and center everything, then recompose if necessary, then take the shot. Works 99% of the time for me.
Have also begun to use center weighted metering as opposed to matrix metering. Seems better to me most of the time.
To each his/her own!:D

I agree Will. I shoot JPEG 95% of the time as I do not want to spend a lot of time post processing all my shots. Plus all the hard drive space taken up with RAW.
A lot of folks do not like Ken Rockwell. I am not a great fan of his but I refuse to let some of his statements stop me from gaining from his knowledge base.

Am I a Pentaxian? Well I don't rightly know. I own Pentax gear, and have for a very long time. But since my old SV screw mount SLR purchase in the early 1960s I have owned quite a few other brands, but came back to Pentax for the K10.
Soooo.
Anyway, I am a Pentaxian in this sense.
I like the idea of a small quality company making as good, and or, better products for less money, to be competitive with the Big Two! It is just healthier for the serious camera buying public, of which I consider myself a small part.
So lets just call it "Enlightened Self Interest", for lack of a better name.

Stewart I commend your efforts in writing this letter.
I feel that far too often, those of us who care about an issue, are far too lax in our approach to this issue when it means that we will have to set down and write a letter expressing our concerns.
Most of us feel quite sure that Canon and Nikon's advertising budget is far larger than Pentax's entire R&D program and advertising budget combined. This means that "they swing a very large hammer" in those magazines they choose to advertise in.
So I feel it is a good thing when the readership of those magazine's let them know that they do not appreciate their obvious bias against Pentax.

Mike, Gary. You both express my position on the rebate issue. We get our rebate and turn around and buy more gear.
As I stated in this thread I have not received my rebates for the K10 and 50-200mm lens yet and I just ordered the AF 540 FGZ flash and the F remote switch!
So Pentax is getting our money "any way, shape, or form!"
I feel sure Pentax will straighten this rebate business out. They seem like a quality company and the people I have dealt with in Colorado are first rate.

I agree with the "lets end the rebate programs as presently constituted." I hate the D## things. Instant rebates make more sense to me.
Pentax needs to get the word out that they are more customer friendly than the other guys.
I just had an occasion to return a ink cartage to Office Depot that was not working right after just purchasing it less than two weeks ago . They made the experience a pure joy. I feel like buying everything I can from a company like that. This is the type of feeling Pentex needs to engender in its customers.
There is no way with Hoya's help, or any other way, that they will ever be as big as Canon or Nikon. But they can have a large group of customers who would not buy from anyone but Pentax no matter what!!

No MRRiley I do not believe they are on there third company. This is the second company, as the first one went out of business over night leaving Pentax to scramble to get another one right in the middle of the on going rebate summer program.
I wrote an email to Pentax and they very quickly got back to me to inform me that they could not find my rebate information on the web site that we use to get our tracking information from either. And suggested that I resubmit.
Fortunitly I learned long ago to keep copys of stuff I submit, so I am doing it all over again. This time I will send it redgestered mail so that they can not say they did not get it.
Pentax has been prompt and most courteous to me on all contacts I have had with them.
The problem is the rebate companys. Some or good, some are fair, and some just seem to be very poor. Hopefully once the dust settles, from the bad company bailing out on Pentax, things will get back to normal!
I feel from my long history with Pentax products and all the posts I have read from others who have invested in Pentax equipment that we really care about Pentax as a company, not just our equipment, and want the very best for the new merger with Hoya. But Pentax needs to look to all aspects of there business, and that sure includes third party companys that handle business for them!

I sent in two rebates three weeks ago tomorrow. I looked on the site that has the search function and got nothing!
It just seems to me that two weeks is enough time for mail to reach a business and be processed. Then allowing another two weeks and we should have our money. So one month time should be enough!
I believe the deal is that the various company's, who offer rebates agree, with the company that they contract with, that Pentax or who ever the company is, will pay the rebate company the rebate money as soon as the rebate forms land on the desk of the processing company. Then by delaying to pay out to the customer the rebate company can put the money in the bank and draw interest on it till we get our checks and cash them. There for, it is in the rebate companys interest to not pay quickly.
Just a thought.

You are right Mike it does have great bokeh. However I started shooting long before we referred to an out of focus background as Bokeh. I would much rather concentrate on sharpness.
And for a zoom your 50-135 has excellent sharpness. It looks as good to me as the prime. I just bought a 50-200 DA that I will trade you straight up for your new zoom. No deal? Oh nuts!:( Anyway, good shooting with your new glass.

I would say that you have two very good lenses Mike. The one difference I see is that you moved in slighty on the second picture to try and compensate for the difference in mm of the lenses, (first one 77mm second at 75mm). It looks like to me, that you came just a little bit closer in the second photo. Yes?
Isn't it nice to be able to afford such good glass?
