My K200D got used again for the first time in several years after my K5 has apparently died (will attempt to troubleshoot sometime). Still works great although I feel there is a bit of a dropoff in quality from the K5. I have been waiting for the K3 replacement and am back on the forums looking for any news. It appears that there still isn't any news. Looks like I will be using the K200D for a couple of months at a minimum since I have other big expenses to take care of first.

I am hoping that this comes out earlier in 2016 rather than later. My original K-5 (purchased 2ish years after launch) is getting a little worn and I think I will stay with APSC. It's not the price of the FF camera, it's the new LBA that would kill me. I could use my K24 but... I would have to get a new zoom. I would need... APSC is better. APSC is better. APSC is better. for me.

I made a 2nd flickr https://www.flickr.com/photos/73857303@N03/ because we lost contact with the password. The password is the name of this forum and I have posted this info every month or so in this thread.
For a brief time I blogged the photos but I got too busy and after awhile people stopped sending any info with the pics.

We stumbled into a small mountain village in the middle of one of their festivals (a god's birthday) while searching for waterfalls and hiking. Quite unexpected but it was the highlight of the weekend. DA40 Random Festival in Baolai, Taiwan by abacus07, on Flickr Youtu.be |

Slim pickings for APSC but some good stuff for Ricoh Pentax.

It's surprising how many people get upset about the pricing of an extremely niche product. There are only a few lenses that I would purposely buy this for but for those lenses this is an important piece of the lineup.

I doubt we will see it soon but I hope to see a next generation K-01. I think it would have been a success if it had been priced as an entry level camera instead of a mid level.

The lineup is already crowded in the 31-40mm range (4 primes). What Pentax really needs is a 24-28mm f2 lens. Make it a DA* lens and it forms a nice trio with the DA*55 and DFA100WR. It would be differentiated from the 21 pancake and actually fill a black hole in the lineup.

I have the A50/1.7, M50/1.7 and the tak 55/1.8. The tak is a little different (probably the coatings) but all perform similarly enough for me. All of course perform awesome. I haven't read it anywhere but I have long wondered if the tak 55/1.8 and A/M/F/FA/DA optics are the same.
If you want AF then I would get a new DA50/1.8. Nothing against the F/FA versions but I don't think you will save much money on them and I would rather buy a new lens than an unknown lens.
If you want MF then get either the M or the A. Once you get the hang of it green button metering (needed on M lenses) is easy but I always forget when I'm switching lenses. Sometimes it's nice to have aperture info when processing/commenting on photos. M lenses don't have it.

I see things don't really change here. I find it frustrating that so many in this thread are trashing this lens since it doesn't hit THEIR wants. Of course it's not fast since it's a compact size zoom. Of course it doesn't have a large zoom range since IQ is a priority with DA ltds. For many active outdoorsy types this is a perfect lens. It's smallish (really small for a zoom) and it should be considerably better than the kit lens while possibly matching the DA*16-50 at smaller apertures. Combined with WR this is exactly what I want for hiking. My commonly used lenses are DA15, K24, M28, DA40, A50 and DFA100. This doesn't replace all of them since they are fast, long, wide or really small but I'm in a lot of situations where it's not possible to constantly be swapping lenses and this is one of the first compact lenses that can get most of the shots (definitely not the 100mm macro) while hiking. And it's WR which is a big issue when I'm out hiking. I will be buying one of these when I have paid off some recent loans regardless of a projected USD1000ish price. it's definitely at the top of my wish list and way above the FA31/43/77, any other zooms, DA*300, any awesome legacy lenses and pretty much anything else BECAUSE it's perfect for the photos that I take.
Some are right to be concerned about Pentax's future product direction. 5 years ago Pentax had a great opportunity to take a big chunk of the adventure photographer market with their WR bodies and compact awesome primes but now the smaller mirrorless offerings have closed the IQ gap while offering substantially smaller packages with WR. It's becoming more and more difficult to not invest in a 2nd more compact system and this might end up putting the brakes on any new Pentax purchases in my future since I wouldn't use my Pentax stuff as much. Despite the DA ltd's being awesome (incredibly awesome) this brand strategy might appeal to fewer and fewer new customers in the future.

I also wish Pentax had more WR primes. Especially the DA15 and a 24mm. I don't even care what the aperture is. I just really like that focal length when hiking and bad weather finds me.
Last weekend I started training for a summer bike tour. 160kms out to Maolin, Taiwan for an overnight camping trip. The focus of the trip was visiting the winter habitat of the purple butterfly. Every year 1000's (or millions) of purple butterflies (they look brown to me) spend the winter there but on Sunday they were elsewhere in the valley. I think this is a red base jezebel that I haven't seen before but that doesn't mean it's rare. red base jezebel, Maolin, Taiwan by abacus07, on Flickr

It ended up taking 2+ weeks for the lens to get here but it's in great shape and I have some weekend travel plans. Hopefully I find the perfect waterfall for the 50.
I've put all of the photos up on the blog - Traveling Nifty Fifty. I know that there are at least one set of photos from RSA that still need to get onto flickr. Try to do this ASAP so I can blog them (predated).
If all goes as planned the lens should travel to Singapore next week before the Philippines and Japan. Australia is next. The lens won't go fast in Asia since it will need to clear customs at each country but as long as each person only keeps it for a couple of days we will be okay.
We're accepting signups from everywhere since there are only a handful of people signed up.
