K-3 II black screen and no AF

Good news! The camera came back from the dead!

I had left it without battery and just gave it at try (internal battery wasn't fully drained yet) - and it turned on. Everything works!

I'll use it at a photoshoot tomorrow (will bring backup, of cause), to see if it will act up again.

I already bought another camera body but that's fine. Can't have enough backups :D

Looking for advise on video for wedding speeches

The story of my life

I briefly hinted at using video light and the couple were quick to dismiss it because "it ruins the existing atmosphere". That a generic attitude here in Denmark. I will push back, once I've gathered enough info about what it takes to do video and if I think I can do video.

Also, very true about not being able to hide from video. I've shot many weddings where someone was also hired to do video. It's limiting when having to avoid getting in their frame. I don't like getting in frame. But the camera itself, or the tripod rather, is also so darn huge and ugly, to get in my shots - and it takes up vital place. Often, I don't have much space to move around on and that's without any tripods.

I completely agree. I've heard audio recorded by the camera and it's bad and amateurish.

Looking for advise on video for wedding speeches

I have virtually no experience with video. I have K-3 II and K-30. I'd prefer to use K-30.

What would it take, to be able to record speeches at a wedding? It will be indoor.

First things to pop into my mind was: battery lifetime. Memory card size and audio. But also sensor heat. Is that a thing?

Battery lifetime: I think recording with LCD screen on would be best, as it would be easier to quickly pass by the camera to adjust focus. I'm currently doing some recording to do my own tests. What should I ordinarily expect?

Memory card size: I currently only own 32GB card as I like to swap often. However I have plenty of them.

Based on previous experience, I guesstimate I'd need to record 3 hours. Let's say 5 hours, to be on the safe side. Specs says both cameras can do up to 25 minutes or 4GB filesize. 25 minutes should be fine for most speeches.

Audio: Can I attach external microphone? Ideally, I'd like to have a small microphone clipped on the the person for audio clarity. But maybe that's involves a different workflow, with the audio being recorded on a separate device and syncing up later in editing? I don't know, so I'm asking.

Heat: not even sure if this is relevant in any way. Is it?

Anything else? I'm open to any kind of advise or suggestions.

The camera would be mounted on a tripod. Tripod placed some suitable place and then just hit record start and stop. That's the current plan. No turning and moving. I won't be aiming for anything artistic. I plan on using Sigma 17-50 f2.8 lens.

I got booked to photograph the wedding a while ago. The couple today asked, if I can record video of speeches during the evening. I told them I don't do video, but might be able to help if they are fine with the camera not being operated while recording, because I need to focus on photographing. They are fine with that. I haven't made any promises and instead told them I'd look into it and then let them know.

I managed to locate the problem, which was caused by an ad-blocker I was using. If I stop the adblocker or if I add Theta app into the blockers whitelist, then the Theta app will work perfectly fine again.

Sounds like the VIIs have that issue fixed - as for the re-seating thing, it has almost become a habit of mine with K-3 II

Regarding the the odd behavior with the FT16 trigger - it's broken. The joint where the trigger housing meets the hotshoe tightening fixture is lose and very easily loses contact and therefor wont fire.

Just got my replacement today - but the shop sent me FT16s, which I can't use at all. Doh! :P

Thanks! Glad you like them.

Thank you.

I used 120cm octa for the previous shots.

I'd love to use the 120cm octa more but the size can be cumbersome to handle and can also limit where I can use it. For instance, the following shot was made on military ground. I used Witstro 48cm Softbox (the one that can be bought as accessory to the WD360) and am rather certain I would have been asked to pack my gear if I had used the 120cm octa :P

Besides, I think the 120 would eat too much light for a shot like this. The final shot was 0.8 stop underexposed (flash set to full power and was as close as I could get it), but that's no biggie to fix in post.

No, you are not alone. It has become a habit of mine to skip the first few (or several) minutes. With especially tutorials video's, I sometimes keep skipping to near the end, as that's when the actual talk about the subject starts... aaaarg!

I was googling for HSS and AD360 when this thread showed up. Might as well do an update :)

I've been very happy with the AD360. The trigger issue I had got solved by adding a YN-RF605C transceiver to the mix. YN on the camera and XT16 on the YN. I already had the YN transceiver, so that was nice.

This week, I got me a Cactus V6II, so I can do some HSS too - didn't need it before, but now the sun can be really evil. I'm looking forward to do the first proper shots tomorrow.

These are some of the first shots I did.

Voigtländer Nokton 58mm f1.4 @ f1.4

70mm Ltd f2.4 @ f2.4

Sigma 85mm f1.4 @ f1.8

Sigma 70-200 f2.8 @ 170mm f2.8

K-3 Battery discussion Generic/Original

So, it's be more than a year since I bough a bunch og Hähnel batteries and Patona chargers.

The batteries have been performing outstanding, and still do. The chargers however are a bit on the flimsy side. The first charger that showed odd behavior is now also the first one that not charging. The light stays green and does not go red at all.

It started with the charger being sensitive about how the battery was placed, abut it's not like I could do much about it. Cleaning the contacts and re-attaching the plate didn't change anything. Now, two more chargers behave the same way.

They were cheap and lasted long enough that I *could* replace them with the same, but I'd prefer something more reliable - but something cheaper than the original Pentax chargers :P

Suggestions?

Trolley, but without the bag

This is how I plan on using it (plus tripod on the bag) and everything is staying nicely in place. I might want to secure the shoulder bag a big better though. Right now I just have the bag handle wrapped around the two bars.

If the hip padding of the belly strap looks like it's too close to the wheel, then that's just an illusion - I have 3cm gap on both sides.

The center of gravity is awesome when I walk with it - I can easily manage it with just a finger :)

It is still very functional. To verify, I can change:
Shutterspeed, aperture and ISO
Metering modes
AF modes (AF-S, AF-C, AF-A)
AF point modes (single, multi etc)
Change the AF point. The top LCD never shows this but you can see through the viewfinder which point is being selected.
AE-L
EV +/-

Top LCD shows shooting mode, but I cant change this (single shot, continuous shooting etc)
GPS can't be turned on

I can live with these limitations.

240 dpi

It's not fine - it's irrelevant.

The photo, RAW, JPG or any other format, could be in 1 or 100000 ppi/dpi, it doesn't matter as long as the file is for digital media.

It also doesn't matter when the ppi/dpi was changed, as long the photo wasn't re-sampled (had amount of pixels altered).

Bonus info: Changing sizes of images using ppi/dpi and re-sampling when the photo is for digital media is generally a bad idea, not the least because it's illogical and and cumbersome: How many inches and ppi/dpi is needed to make a Facebook cover with a 1:1 pixel ratio? You'll only find out by trial and error - mostly error.

I meant screens.

You can change the ppi with or without re-sampling. If you change it without re-sampling, the image will look no different on a screen, no matter what ppi you set it to. That was my main point.

However, those very same files will print differently if the printer/software is set to respect the ppi - and this in particular is where ppi comes into play. I'm not disputing print related use of ppi - with print you can't avoid ppi.

I'm also not saying an image shouldn't be changed in size for screen viewing purposes. It should (but with pixels, not ppi), not only for file size/streaming related reasons but also because an image is best view in 1:1 scale ratio, where 1 image pixel takes up exactly 1 screen pixel.

This means, for example, a 1920 pixels wide image will cover the full width and look at it's best on a 30" TV with a native resolution of 1920 - but so is the case if the screen is 5" and also has a 1920 pixels wide native resolution, so what is an inch really on screens? It's nothing, it's irrelevant.

I hope that made more sense.

What & why silver or THAT color?

All my cameras have been black. I'd love a silver edition-ish theme, but as a wedding photographer, I'm careful not to stand too much out.

My K-x shelf model (no mechanics and electronics in it) is metallic brown, so I'm not all that boring ;)
