K1000 body refurbishment

If you're looking to fill in the black lettering, Thin some black paint with the appropriate thinner (not too thin, just enough so it's encouraged to move about), and let it flow into the recesses. If any spill over, quickly wipe it off with a rag. I did this with my KX and some hobby paints, and the paintwork still holds up.

CR2's or FG grip?

I'd get the grip, and then get a good set of rechargeable AA batteries. It'll pay for itself in the long run. Unless, of course, the cost of the rechargeable CR2's and charger are less than the grip + batteries. You may also want to consider the grip if you have large-ish hands.

I've got both the MZ-M and the MZ-6, and I like them better with the grip, but that's just me.

EDIT: I've left the camera loaded with film for months using Ni-MH batteries, and it was ready to go when I picked it up to use it. I think there were eloops in the camera, but I'm not sure.

Models... Combined with photography! This particular Sci-Fi subject comes from the Universal Century universe of Gundam. 1:100 scale (about 18cm tall), airbrushed, and dry brushed to give it the battle worn look. Got me 3rd place in the Sci-fi robots category last September!

What made for a good FILM camera?

For me, a good film camera is one that's easy to load, easy to shoot, easy to unload and easy to change lenses. It also must be reliable and not require expensive batteries (or not require batteries at all).

By that definition, my KX falls very nicely into that definition.

Trying out a skeleton watch, but didn't want to spend a large amount of money, so it was to eBay to find something I liked. Quite a bit of selection there, and surprisingly tricky to find something that was both functional and good looking. Lots of skeletons don't use contrasting materials, which makes it hard to read at a glance. This is a no-name (well, it says Winners on it) watch, but it was really the look that caught my eye (and the price). If I really get into it, I'm going to save up for a nice one.

Don't turnof your hearing aids!

Given that I wear hearing aids, and somewhat detest loud noises, I asked the tech for a "bar setting" noise reduction for one of my modes. Only problem is, is that when I have to talk to the bartender, I keep forgetting to raise my voice... I can hear him (or her), but they can't hear me...

Pentax PZ-1P?

The pop-up not popping up is not too big of a deal. You can make a small wedge to insert into the flash to keep it up. I made one for my PZ-1p, and I cut a tiny wedge into the lip of the flash, so I could prop it up to insert the wedge to keep it up.

My quick shot. I did what may constitute a very dangerous act (more for my eyes, than the camera), and shot the sun without a solar filter. I used two polerizers to cut light down so that I could expose for the sun. That little trick was something I read on the forums a couple of years back. Still it took a 1/8000 sec shutter speed, and F40 at 300 mm to resolve everything, with my eyes closed, of course. I tripped the shutter when the innards of my eyelids lit up.

Would I do this again? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

My 9/11 issues that remain a mystery

I have problems with your jet's on the ground:

1) You're assuming that they're ready to fly on a moment's notice
2) Modern jets require lots of time to be ready to fly, they don't turn on with one switch.
3) You're assuming that the pilots are on base, in their gear, and ready to fly.
4) You're assuming the jets are fueled.
5) Even though an F-14's (using a fighter you've pointed out) top speed is Mach 2.34 at altitude (according to Wikipedia), they can't spend a lot of time at this speed. Afterburners go through fuel like nobody's business. Most of the time, fighters spend their time in the high subsonic, just like jetliners, making them only marginally faster than a 757.

Suppose a fighter was scrambled and was able to intercept either the Pentagon plane or the second World Trade Center plane. If it's armed with sidewinder missiles (a short range missile), or even just with the gun, it will be bringing the plane down over a populated area.

Hate to say it, but there's a nasty chance that they're fake. There's lots of contraband on E-bay, and there's lots of real product on it, but the trick is to sort it out.

Plus, buying the batteries at a retail outlet would get you a return policy that will help you in case you buy a set of duds.

Macro Lense Recommendations, less than $200

Well, I did find a Kiron 105mm 2.8 that went 1:1, and was $199. It was in poor cosmetic condition, didn't have the A-setting on the aperture ring, but the optics and aperture function were OK. This was in a small local camera shop.

So, it's certainly possible, you just need to be patient, and hunt around.

Personally, I think the union was smart doing the rotating strikes. Gets the message out, and doesn't put the union in too bad a light. Locking out the workers was a dumb, dumb move, that will only hurt Canadapost in the long run.

Besides, I like getting mail, even if it is dreaded bills.

Sigma 70-300 1:4-5.6 DL Macro vs Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG MACRO (Comparo)

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/post-your-photos/107262-machinery-vintage...a-airshow.html

It's a shameless link, but relevant, as I used the Sigma 70-300 4-5.6 DL macro all day long. Across the focal lengths, it was a decent, if not, great performer, for the price I paid for it. Most of the pictures were taken at ISO 400 and at F8, with the shutter speed hovering at around 1/800-1/1000 of a second. My only wish was that it was wider, as I was right in front, and 70mm sometimes wasn't wide enough.

How to clean the chrome cover on cameras?

I like to use a q-tip moistened with some 90% rubbing alcohol to clean the chrome on the top of my film cameras. Just make sure the q-tip isn't dripping, as you don't want any to spill into the guts of the camera. Worked pretty well for me.

Going to Disney World this summer

Jatrax... That was me when I went to Vancouver. Brought my father's Spotmatic and every single lens with me (28, 35, 50, 55, 135 and 250), a flash, and a K1000... Never again. Also, that strap system seems pretty sweet, but I think I'll stick with the "hippie" strap (those extra wide straps with the braiding in it) I've put onto my K7. It's just as comfortable. Weight and comfort are my #1 priority...

As much as I would love to have a 16-50 and a 50-135, it's kinda out of my reach at the moment.

Appreciate the comments and suggestions!

Going to Disney World this summer

Yes, this is another seeking-advice thread...

Long story short, I'm going to Disney World this summer, and I'm looking for suggestions as to what to bring. I'm trying to keep it very light (one body, a flash, and one or two lenses), and I'm kinda stuck as to what to bring...

Idea 1:
K7
Tamron 28-75 2.8
Pentax 50 1.4/ D-FA 100 2.8 WR
Sigma EF-530 Super

Idea 2:
K7
Sigma 18-125 3.5-5.6
Sigma EF-530 Super

Idea 3:
K7
Sigma 18-125 3.5-5.6
D-FA 100 2.8 WR
Sigma EF-530 Super

I'm partial to Idea 2, as it's the lightest kit I can bring, but would I be hampering myself in any way?

Sunset photography, should sunset filter or any other filters be used?

You may also want to consider some simple under-exposure. Meter off the area around the sun, and dial in about -1 ev. You'll keep the detail around the sun, and you'll get some nice colours as the sun sets. This is one of mine from a few years back. Experiment and find what you like!

Inexpensive laptop?

To be fair, you never mentioned the need for a DVD drive. But, an external USB DVD drive can be added to the portable for fairly cheaply. You can also use the map network drive function in Windows to simply borrow the one attached to another computer on the network. I've tried this out (map network drive), and installed several pieces of software on the netbook, and then went and did the no-cd crack (shame on me, I know...), so I didn't need to be tethered to the main computer to use the software.

If you do get a laptop or netbook, make sure it doesn't come with Windows 7 Starter edition. Make sure it comes with at least Windows 7 Home Premium. Home Premium has more features.

Have you considered a netbook? I'm using an Acer Aspire One D250, and for what it is, it's great! I don't really care about the touch pad (easily fixed with a mouse), but it will do photo editing. You just need to be a little patient with it.

A netbook will run you $200-$400, depending on what's in it, and what's on special.
