Hi SBH, thanks for the update.
Refresh my memory, where did you get yours from?
Was your 2nd decentered about the same as the first better/worse?
Were you talking with the retailer or PENTAX repair?

You are probably right, might call upon my friend with the K-1 and take some pics with him.
I know the K-1 has a lot more sensor size, but I can say the K3's corners look pretty decent.

Sorry for the large images, anyone else who has questions might want to see some samples.

I tried to follow the decentring test not sure if I did it right or had it set up properly.
It looked like a circle on the screen.

Hi Jatrax,

Thanks for the response!

I can't think of a situation where Amazon has ever shipped me anything in it's OEM box. I wonder if the special shipping instructions got messed up on this item. It should have been shipped with extra care and ended up getting shipped with no care. After I read your response, I went to Amazon and complained. They gave me a discount which I am happy to accept as the lens seems to be functioning properly on my K3.

Also through the input of other forum members and other sites and reviews, it seems some of the issues I have with this lens are common. Walked around for a bit today in the backyard with the lens. Worked fine. Going to have to learn to adjust the AF microadjust on the fly or find a happy medium. Other than that worked great. Still a bit heavy, but I am getting used to it.

Thanks again Jatrax for convincing me to make a complaint, I didn't think they would offer a discount, happy they did and I can be done with this purchasing process! Now the question isn't whether to send it back or not, it's how can I get the best images from it? So thanks for that!

Thanks for everyone who chimed in and helped, it is really appreciated.

Thanks Kunzite, sorry I misunderstood.

I am really not too upset about the situation. I am just a little confused about it all.
Ya, Amazon definitely dropped the ball on the shipping, however I still can't say for certain that it was the cause.

I actually sell merchandise on Amazon, as a 3rd party seller. I am sure that their system has some kind of flag to properly package those items, and it wasn't being selected. They did come from different warehouses. I have had some weird issues with their product catalog.

I have bought most of my gear from B&H and Adorama, with few issues. Although, I will admit, I am probably looking at this lens with a magnifying glass due to it's price tag and importance.

Just took some pictures with the 3rd copy I got and it did have a few AF issues in lighting I wouldn't expect it to have problems with, but overall it is working fine. The AF sound thing doesn't seem to be as noticeable to me as it did yesterday. So I think I am keeping this one.

Wish I had a friend who worked in the QA lab at Pentax/Ricoh I could call on to give me a hand.

Thanks again Kunzite for your input, it's appreciated.

I probably should as a matter of principle, but it does seem to be functioning properly and it's here in my hands. I am thinking I will go with it, but I will keep that in mind in the future. Just imagine if I had an event I need to shoot, this thing has set me back weeks. Luckily I rarely see daylight with work and being the dead of winter.

Thanks for the input!

---------- Post added 01-18-2017 at 09:43 AM ----------

I really do have no idea what's up. How much is in my head and what really the problems are.
I started to think that there might be a slight copy variance that would cause some lenses to focus inconsistency with the K3. The K1's improved AF might be able to 'see past that variance' and function with better accuracy and less inconsistency.

It could just be shipping and even though the boxes looked rough, 1 might have taken some falls and the other just skidded around. Who knows...

Another thought I had, which probably wouldn't be a popular thought. Most production facilities would have strict QA and testing to tight tolerances as they begin producing a product. Then as they produce more and more without issues, they lessen the testing and relax the tolerances to save money. I hope that's not the case, and I doubt it.

I <3 PENTAX

Wow, that's an excellent summation UncleVanya!

Me? I still don't know what's going on. The first one I got came in a nice carboard box because I ordered something else as well and both items were in there with some packaging materials.
It didn't perform well in my opinion.

The 2nd came looking like it went through war.
It didn't perform well in my opinion.

The 3rd one came worse than the 2nd.
It seems to be performing better than the other 2. The Micro AF adjustments aren't as high. Only thing I am scared about is the AF noise. If it wasn't making a grinding noise during AF this would be a keeper in my book. Not sure if my bar is set too high or too low or what others would accept.

I am not blaming anyone, I just don't know what the heck is going on. I just wanted to share my honest feedback to get some input. Also to update the community to my issues in case there was some problem. If its shipping or K3 expectations or a drop in production values at Ricoh or grey market lenses at Amazon or my mental deficiencies. :)

Good question!
I just got one, and they said they would send a replacement immediately, so I tried it.
Then I said the 2nd one was bad and they sent me a tracking number of a 3rd so I figured I would try it.

---------- Post added 01-17-2017 at 10:11 PM ----------

Thanks for your and everyone's input!

Think it's gray market stuff? You'd think Pentax/Ricoh would be able to verify that somehow. Maybe by serial number?
Another thing I would like to note, each one of these lenses came from a different Amazon warehouse.

Didn't have much time, but I did take it out of the box and take a few pics. I would say this is much sharper and much more consistent than the first 2 copies I tried.
Sorry for the large image below, crop but not resized jpg.

Hopefully I will have more time tonight and I will test it further. One thing I would like to ask you guys. This AF sounds louder than the first 2. Especially when it is focusing from close to far. I am not too concerned about it unless that means it will fail sooner. Manual focus is silent. I will take a video and show you guys... the experts.

I thought for sure this wouldn't perform given my experience with the first two, but it seems a lot better than the others!
Sharpness is there and AF is more consistant. When I pushed it into the dark areas it really acted squirrely like most lenses. However when I tried to focus on my lit scene it was pretty reliable and consistant. Only 1 or 2 times in the 20 or 30 shots I took was it unable to find focus. I would say that's on par with my Tamron.

Thanks again to everyone!

Just an update, my 3rd lens came from Amazon.

I complained to them about not shipping in a outer cardboard box.

Despite given this friendly email:

I think if I was Penax/Ricoh that I would be pissed.
I kept a lot of my boxes to my gear, they are all in pristine shape. If I keep this it'd be in the worst shape for sure.

If I get time, I will do some testing tonight.
Might ask for my friend to come over with his K-1 to test as well.

Thanks for everyone's input and help. IT's appreciated!

Anyone have a contact for Ricoh/Pentax USA? I tried there contact us on their site and got an error about my email not matching when it clearly did. I think they are updating it.

What do you think the issue was? Do you think your K20D was out of alignment of some sort?

---------- Post added 01-16-2017 at 08:12 PM ----------

Good suggestions, I did do spot center AF and had ample light. I was shooting f2.8 since that is how it will need to perform.
I do realize that I will be shooting at a greater distance than 10 or 20 feet and the DoF will be much greater and forgiving at that distance.

---------- Post added 01-16-2017 at 08:24 PM ----------

I believe it, probably figured out it was cheaper to take returns than to do QA testing. Even if all companies do it, I think it's a bad move.
My first dSLR was a Canon, after 2 of them broke I wanted to try something different and moved to Pentax.
The big guys don't have to worry, but Pentax only gets one chance to woo new customers and turn them into long term customers. If I was early it to my hobby and only had 1 or 2 lenses and just 1 body, I could easily see how a bad experience with a 70-200mm could make me try a canon or nikon. Heck even now I am thinking about it. I love Pentax, and I suppose we should be happy they are in business and still producing excellent products. It's in our nature to want more for less. I want better products, every one tested and perfect, and I want them cheaper than the other guys. Is that too much to ask?

---------- Post added 01-16-2017 at 08:28 PM ----------

Myself and a few others have noticed some inconsistent copies and/or a problem with the DFA70-200MM and the K-3.
Could just be expected deviation in the production of the lens.

Wow, 4th copy. That's very interesting. You see videos of employees in white suits and gloves testing lenses in a laboratory setting. Thinking there is computer aided lens testing and aligning processes to get these lenses perfect. Hard to believe there could be that much of a variance in lenses. I wonder what the percentage of "good copies" to "bad copies" there are?

I would think that at this price point there would be some rigorous quality assurance practices for the Pentax 70-200mm.

Yes, my comment sounded confusing, but I was agreeing with you.
Just saying that it would be like trying to get more detail out of the same physical portion of the glass.
Some some sort of sharpness issues might be highlighted with the K3 vs the K1, correct?

Thanks for the input!

---------- Post added 01-16-2017 at 07:44 AM ----------

SBH,

That's very interesting. Is that the K3 or K1 or ??

See on my copy it seemed like every once in a while I could get a sharp shot. So I kept thinking it wasn't the glass, it was the AF or IS or something else I was doing.

Looks like you got a nice test chart, and some testing going. Are you comparing it to the 100mm Macro D FA 2.8?
What is your distance to the test chart.

Very interested to hear more about your situation.

Thanks for posting!

Interesting thoughts,

One thing I should have done is tried a K1 with it to see how it would perform. I have a friend nearby with a K1, I wished I would have done that, just to see if they behave better on that body.

---------- Post added 01-16-2017 at 07:30 AM ----------

I agree about the magnification, so with the pixel density being higher on my K3 than the K1?
6.66 MP/cm² on K3
4.24 MP/cm² on K1
It would be trying to get more detail out of the cropped portion of the glass than the K1 would be. Right?

That is also something I never thought about.

Excellent advice zapp,

1) I didn't realize Amazon was an el-cheapo source. Not sure if any place I could get it locally. It would probably be a 3 hour drive to Chicago for me. Amazon gets the directly from Pentax don't they? or could they be coming from an additional source. Amazon told me they came in as "New from manufacturer"

2) I was hoping my testing was just not accurate, so I did take some pictures out in daylight. I was only home early enough once. I would say that AF performed slightly better, but still inconsistent. One more thing is that I used the Tamron to shoot football games at night, under artificial light. So I kind of wanted to test it in those conditions, however inaccurate. I would say my test was a lot brighter than what the football game would be.

3) Makes a lot of sense!

4) Also, makes a lot of sense. Something I have been guilty of. However, I will have to retest all my lenses. One thing I did while I was testing the Pentax 70-200mm was to reset all my custom functions. I was thinking some setting I had was causing a problem. So I lost all my settings. This time as I retest all my lenses I will also write them down.

5) I would prefer to buy Pentax if they make the product. Although, if a 3rd party is better and cheaper, might be hard to pass up. My main lenses are 31mm 43mm 50/1.4 77mm and 100mm all pentax I also use a sigma 8-16mm and the tamron 70-200mm. I would prefer Pentax if possible. That's what started this is I wanted a better 70-200mm even though it was more expensive I was trying to get the Pentax product.

6) Like I have said I really want to love this lens, it's an important range and an important lens to have.

Ok, that is excellent input. So you can expect to have different different adjustments at different focal ranges. That is good to know, so I can try and find an intermediate value to try and keep things in DOF. That is disappointing for sure, but definitely good to know. Would be awesome if the camera software could allow for those adjustment, but I haven't seen anything like that on any camera.

Like I said before I rarely use live view, so I guess I will have try and use it more often when I can. I don't think I will be able to at a football game.

Did you find an improvement in AF consistency and accuracy when you moved to the K1?

Thanks Zapp for your input, definitely some good advice. It's appreciated!

Thanks for the input RAWR,

I am sure I wasn't doing proper testing. Since I had problems with consistancy, I wanted to try different things to try and get some success.
All I can really say is that shooting around the house and a little outside, the AF didn't perform as well as my old tamron, which has been through hell and back.
Isn't CDAF using live view? Since I rarely use live view I never messed with it for testing. I think I brought it when I was aligning both the lenses. Just checked the forums and some people said CDAF was much better for focusing so maybe I should have tried that. Do you have to use live view to use CDAF? Forgive my ignorance on that, like I said I rarely use live view. I remember when I got a camera that had it and I thought I would use it all the time, and never did...

In the past, I always checked and calibrated AF using a couple batteries level with the lens/tripod. Put 3 batteries on table 1 closer and 1 farther away. I would focus on the center battery and adjust accordingly. These lenses didn't seem to respond like my other lenses. So I looked online and made myself a quick and dirty focus chart with ruler on side. Poor man's lens align item. Leveled the lens to the chart and shot away. Even with nice crisp clear black and white focus chart. I found the lenses hunting and slow to focus. I tried to get past the inconsistency and adjust them. When I felt I had them in range, I found 1 out of 5 or 6 shots were out of focus. Then when I moved the lens back, the AF was again off and would require adjustment. The same was true for changing the focal lenth. The lens at 70mm was at a completely different AF adjustment than 200mm.

here is one I thought I had dialed in pretty good.

Yes, I could be just too close to the subject. I also hoped to use this lens for portraits. I love using the 77mm for portraits, hoped to use this as well. I was often shooting around 10ft away from my focus chart. I varied it up quite a bit. What distance should I have been at (for a close distance) when the next one comes in to test? I was using a calculator to find my depth of field so I would know what to expect, often it was around 1"

I first tested the #1 pentax 70-200 to the tamron, and was disappointed in the AF and the consistency of sharpness. (which might always be AF related)
Then convinced I had a bad copy, I got a replacement pentax 70-200mm, and tested to see if the #2 pentax was better than the #1 and found them both to be acting erratically.
Monday I did some walk around shots.
Tuesday night I spent all night focusing on those test charts. Changing distances and focal lenths. Alternating cameras and adjusting lighting.
Then last night, I grabbed my tea set and took come pictures of that, just for something different to look at. I thought maybe the focus chart was somehow not working the way I thought it should.

Not at all a scientific test so you are correct on that.

No matter what, as a pentax fan who saved up for a long time on this, I really want to love this lens. It's a beautiful lens in construction. I loved seeing the sample shots, even read the stupid interview with the designers at Pentax. I love how it feels. It is surprisingly heavy, but I can live with that if it can perform.
Maybe that slight IQ increase vs the tamron is what everyone is raving about. It's most likely a problem of expectations and my own personal photography skills versus good copy/ bad copy. Getting a bad copy I can believe, but not 2 in a row. Well we will know for sure next week. If this one doesn't live up to my expectations, i'll have to give up on the pentax 70-200mm. :(

Thanks!

I have always wanted to visit Europe. Go there, get lens, and use it and my 3 amigo limiteds to photograph my way through Europe.
Sounds fun, but seriously thank you Kenspo. :)

This Lens is so important to me, that I am considering asking Ricoh/Pentax to Calibrate my camera and lenses. Not sure what it would cost, but I know they have some pretty advanced tools.
Maybe I can find a Ricoh agent stateside that will take pitty on me and my lowly selection of cameras and lenses. Maybe I just need to upgrade to the K1. It only took a year or so to save up for the 70-200mm.
I might have to start a kickstarter or a gofundme for it.

Replacement, but I have already received 2 of these lenses.

Description of issue:

I purchased this lens, when I received it, it appeared to be opened before. I am not saying it was used, but perhaps tested and returned? Since the lens was not very sharp and displayed autofocus problems I asked Amazon for a replacement and was promptly shipped a new one.

The replacement came without any external packaging, which is not normally how a photo gear store would send a $1600 lens. However the box was relatively in good shape. It also had some signs that it may have been opened before, but not as bad as the first one. Unfortunately, the lens showed some troubling signs of AF problems and sharpness problems.

I have been talking on a forum to other purchasers of this lens. One stated that the warranty card was not in the proper place. Here is the link to post and responses:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/337315-pent...-concerns.html

Regarding these issues, you might ask, maybe it's my camera? Which is a reasonable question. Well I have 2 of the same cameras (Pentax K3) and the behavior is the same on both. Also, I have about 10 other lenses I use regularly that perform very well. I would say they perform excellent. I know from fellow forum members and sample images, that this lens is a performer and should be working much better than this.

So, I just have 2 questions for you.

1) When these lenses go back to you, do they go back to Pentax for testing/recalibrating? or are they tested by you and resent out to customers?

2) If I was to ask for a replacement lens, could I request one direct from the factory? Also, just as important, some proper packaging for the lens? I would pay extra to have it properly boxed with foam/bubble wrap. The UPS/USPS folks in my area hate their job and take it out on the parcels they deliver.

I apologize for the trouble and Amazon's response was prompt and friendly. Just looking for a little assistance in this matter. This lens is important to me, it's the culmination of a year of saving and selling lenses, so I want to make sure I get a decent lens and I really appreciate you help in doing so.

Thank you very much,
Randy

These images don't seem to bad. It's a general inconsistency of things that really bothers me. I know the glass is capable of sharp images. I have taken some with both of those lenses. Just got to be the right distance from subject and the AF lands on the right spot you can get a nice shot. It just is oddly inconsistent. If I was using this for shooting a football game for example. There are so many variables in play already, to tack on a hit&miss lens too would make it even more frustrating.

Trying to get a hold of Amazon, but there automated thing says contact Pentax for repair. Anyone have a good Amazon contact?

Thanks,
Randy

You sure do have a few decent lenses!
You have the K3 still? Have you used the 70-200mm with the K3?
Everyone really loves this lens, and I have seen some awesome test shots. Can't figure out why I can't.

Going to post some test shots this afternoon.

You know that's not really a bad idea...

I would pay $100 extra for someone to do this:
get a copy from B&H
test it for sharpness/decentering/AF that sort of thing
gauge it to other test shots
package it properly
ship it to me

Thanks for the comment Winder it's your comment and others like it that are going to make me give it another shot.
If this one doesn't work I think Pentax should comp me 2 K1 bodies for my trouble.

Have you use any similar sigma/tamron 70-200mm before? I am wondering if I could find someone that used the tamron and upgraded to the Pentax. I would like to hear their opinion.

I emailed Sigma and asked them if they could produce their 70-200mm for the pentax K mount again.

I was too rawr,

My only concern is that a $2000 lens can packaged well and roughed up in shipment and basically be defective. How will it hold up while it's bouncin' around in my padded bag?
Is it just a matter of bounces and nudges that will put this lens off?

It seems so well built. Reminds me limited lenses. Really solid. It seems like it should be able to take a beating in it's box, even what UPS can dish out.

Thanks for your input!
