Sorry for not seeing your question until now. I have the latest version 1.01? but it also worked with 1.0 I can confirm. Make sure the A/E button is set to "AE Lock" in menu section #10. Someone might have answered that below but double check menu #10 is set to option #4. Then just point at a light source in P, get the shutter speed you want and hit lock. Turn casually to Movie and you are locked.

A 50mm lens on a K-x with be equivalent to a 75mm lens on a full frame/35mm camera. I have a 50mm 1.7-M on a K-x, looks good for $50.

New owner of a K-x as well. I love the camera. It feels great, takes great photos, I like the lenses (18-55 DAL) (55-300 DAL) (50mm 1.7 M), and it was the right price, cheap. That being said, it is cool it does video. It is not so cool that video is just so so. I'm also the owner of a Canon HV30 which is awesome for its price. The only thing the K-x provides unique/useful to video is an easier capability to get shallow depth of field. That being said, the quality of video, as well as the software/hardware control features are lacking compared to even something like HV cameras. Which is fine because HV's are nowhere close in terms of still capabilities. Just different instruments entirely. On vimeo there are some great looking K-X clips but I would not buy this camera if you looking to do more video than stills. Plus, the K-x's low light strength on stills has no bearing on the vdieo. For some reason, whether it be the codec or processing, K-x video is noisy, even with exposure locked at a low iso 100-200. I'm not writing this in response to anything above just so as to not start another thread. Just want to give any folks looking to do video a heads up as I'm a 50-50 guy with stills/video and My HV30 will definitely be doing most of the video work.

mediaslinky: BTW, the ornament video does look nice. Did find the video looked noisy at full size on your monitor?

Not sure if this has been confirmed already but Exposure lock works with the K-X as well. Just go to P-mode and set iso and aperture then point camera at a light source until the shutter is at what you want and hit exposure lock. Turn to video mode and there is NO need to hit AE-lock again, it is already locked.

The 180 Degree Shutter

This "rule of thumb" seems to be misinterpreted as a blanket practice. It is true that most often films shoot with a 1/48 shutter while exposing 24fps but this has to do more with the motion blur alone. a 1/48 shutter is just "a look" as is a shutter of 1/2000. But, for instance, if you're shooting a high speed to slow-mo recording at 1,000,000fps there is no need to have a "180 degree shutter" as 1/,000,000/sec shutter will be enough to capture an image without any blur.

All I'm saying is that the 180 degree "rule" is just based on a common practice in film and broadcast because a shutter of ~ 1/48 -> 1/60 gives the most realistic representation of motion blur and that anything higher starts looking choppier, which can be ok, if used for an effect ie .. "Gladiator" "Private Ryan".

I often use a 360 degree shutter (1/24, 1/30) for low-light/low-movement scenes such as interviews to capture more light with less gain and it looks fine.

Been shooting all afternoon with the 1.7 and it looks awesome. As I said above, 99% of use with this lens will be at 1.7 so using in Av has worked perfectly. And while the focus confirmation isn't perfect it works decently and was an added perk I didn't know existed. If I need small aperture and a fast shutter I'm gonna just slap on the kit lens which is fine for me and what I need the camera for.

So I ended up getting an SMC Pentax-M 1:1.7 50mm for $50. It is Asahi Opt brand. The store also had a 50mm 2.0 in the A version for auto metering. He recomendded the 2.0 because of the full use of metering and flash. My plan with this lens is to mostly use it wide open (1.7) so I figured I'd just use Av mode and be fine. Would the 50mm 2.0 A be a better buy than the 1.7 M?

I may just hold out for a K mount 50mm 1.7 or 1.4. The main reason why I chose Pentax over Canon, Nikon, Sony etc.. was because of availability of cheap fast glass. I have to say, the K-x's ergonomics outdo the T2i and the lower end Nikons I've held in store.

Thanks for the info. Do you yourself use an M42 adaptor to K-mount? Generic or Pentax brand? I'm disappointed to read alot of negative reviews on the cheap generic adaptors. Would rather spend $10 than $30 but don't want to be prying things off with screwdrivers. Are there K-mount manual focus primes between 50mm-135mm. Ideally I just want a 50mm at F1.8 or faster for relatively cheap and I'd rather not use an adaptor if I don't have too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentax_K_mount#Pentax_2

I don't see where it states whether the lens is K mount or M42.

I'm looking at picking up a Spotmatic off Craigslist with a 55mm 1.8 for my new K-x. Do I need a adaptor ring for this lens on the K-x or will it mount direct? I'm just starting to learn about the Pentax lens mounts. I'm not sure yet what exact model the 55mm is but just that is on a Spotmatic for $60. Thanks.

Why no manual controls? Bigger discussion ...

Ok ... so why hasn't Pentax included manual control as a feature yet? Is it:

-Too complicated for their engineers?
-Too expensive to design,in turn raising the price of the camera?
-An issue with protecting their video sales?
-Because Pentax thinks its better we have less control over our cameras?

My guess would be, NO to all of the above. Which is why I'm saying it makes no sense.

If Pentax can make and sell a quality DSLR for $500, including a kit lens, and already with video functionality, I can't imagine why they don't/can't come out with an interchangeable lens camcorder and target the $800 and below. I think it would do real well ... I'd buy one.

All good points. I guess the basis for what I'm saying is that Pentax, unlike Canon and Sony, is in a unique position with their HDSLR's in that they don't have to protect their higher end video products, because they don't have them. Crippling functionality on a lower priced product doesn't make sense if they have the technical capabilities to make it fully customizable, which i have to imagine they can. Most of the features Canon and Sony DSLRs lack definitely point to their own product line protection, don't offer too much for too little$$$. I guess I just think it makes sense as is possible for Pentax to take advantage of this niche video market that is definitely growing.

I'm looking to purchase a K-x because of the low price, still quality, low light ability, video functionality and the access to cheap quality older K-mount lenses. Everything I read is very positive especially about its high iso capability. I've seen K-x videos that look both good and bad but i attribute that to the human. My question is why does a company like Pentax restrict functionality as basic as manual exposure on its video setting and why not go with a higher end codec featuring 422 color space? The reason I ask is that I'm sure they have engineers who could code a way to do this, the hardware for sure can handle it and the biggest reason being, they are NOT protecting a pro line of video cameras like Canon and Sony. I can understand why Canon and Sony do it. "you wan to have pro video features? Buy our pro cameras." And I know Pentax is primarily a still camera company but don't you think they would really pump sales if they took DSLR video up a notch from the rest? It seems like they are already losing out to Canon and Nikon in the still department so why not? And the HDSLR craze doesn't seem to be going away. I just think they are in a better position to exploit the demand because they do not have to protect a higher end product line. Thoughts ...?
