Just press the plain black unmarked button on the upper left of the housing and out she pops. Or else put your fingernail under the cutout corner on the right bottom corner of the screen and pull. And then take a nail file to repair your fingernail.  |

When I first saw your pic I thought it was a Borgward Isabella of the same year, a car I am very much familiar with as I know someone in Germany who has one in his 4 car Borgward collection.
The body style is very much of this era. There were lots in Europ that followed roughly the same line.

You never get it right to total satisfaction but you can go a long way to improve your scans in just seconds.

The good:
The background is perfect for this type of presentation. It is uniform enough (homogenised) in appearance and out of focus to afford good separation from the subject. I also like that it is bright enough to show off the wet hair which gives the subject added interest. Imagine what this would be like with a busy background.
The not so good:
The washed out highlights. too much glare, too distracting. It would have been better to underexpose enough to retain some details in those areas and then further reduce highlights in post, then increase exposure (shadows as well) to return the model's correct exposure.
I have done a quick and dirty job to simulate this, (don't look too closely) to illustrate what it could look like. Colours (skin tones) are good too. I think you put some thought into this image.

Hi
If your posted image is a true representation of what you have “extracted” from your RAW and print this you will be very disappointed.
Why I am saying this? What you see on your computer screen is generated by mixing colours with light. Your screen illuminate RGB (red, green and blue) to produce colours, which is called additive colours.
Printers start the colour process with white paper and add CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) to generate your picture. It is called subtractive colours.
And therein lies the problem, what looks bright on screen, when printed looks much darker. Illumined colours versus subtractive colours (or reflective if you like).
So, before going to print please rework your picture with reflective colours in mind. Since the original is in RAw format this should be easy.
Firstly, the white body of the bird is washed out (in your JPG). I can guaranty you there is much detail ready to be discovered.
Secondly, as I see here too often, your pic is underexposed. If you print it as it is, it will be disappointingly too dark. The water in which the bird stands is too dark the lovely rings should be more visible because I feel they are part of the attraction together with the reflection of the bird. To a lesser degree the background is important as well albeit to a much lesser degree.
I work with PhotoShop and in the RAW converter I would first brighten the image a wee bit, next I would work the Highlight Slider and move it all the way to the left. You can go wild here, since the bird is just about the only bright white highlight in the picture doing this will not effect the rest of the picture. Holy crap, the detail you will recover in the feathers will bowl you over. If you feel this has dulled the white a bit you can recover by moving the white slider to the rightit. (increase white) Also play around with the black slider and settle for what you think is right. Last but not least work the shadow slider to set the shadows in the picture.
If you do not have PhotoShop, I am sure other RAW converters work pretty much the same.
Overall “think printing” which means the pic will have to look brighter on screen, but not too much. If you are unsure do two or three variations with slightly different settings and get small test prints (postcard size) and settle on one or do some final adjustments and then go for it. I print a lot and don't have to do this anymore, I softproof everything on my Professional EIZO monitor.
As for paper, I am a fan for “Ilford Galerie Prestige”. It has a lovely semi gloss textured finish and prints very well. You will be pleased with it.

Hi,
I asume this is a scan and you have done some colour adjustments in PP. I am not going to comment on composition here but have some suggestion to have another look at colour and exposure.
Firstly, exposure. I think your image is somewhat underexposed, the sun is quite bright which means the image also should be quite bright. When you increase brightness the colours will brighten up as well.
I have been in Vancouver only three weeks ago and I remember well how some of the leaves of certain trees turn a bright yellow and they are quite striking when the sun shines through them.
Secondly, the overall image is too red. In the old film days when people had to rely on the corner store to develop photographs colours of prints often were flat and grey because they were developed with spent chemicals. The disappointment usually was great. Now it has swung the other way. With modern software colours can be cranked up like there is no tomorrow. I see this all the time. Just google “autumn leaves” and you see pictures as if on LSD.
A good indication that there is too much red overall in your pic is, the tree trunks have, it seems, also turned an autumn colour as well. The trunk second from the left should reflect the yellow of the bright yellow leaves.
If you absolutely insist on that strong red, for what ever reason, this would be of course be a personal consideration and you have some followers. No problems. I would however implore you to consider increasing the exposure.

Unfortunately this was the only shot I had time for. As you can see by the shadows, there was a mad crowd muscling in from the left and another lot from behind blocking my view very rapidly. :mad:

I agree with that.
With a few correction this coluld be great. Too red, too dark. The white of the eyeball (sclera) should be white, unless after a night of heavy alcohol consumption :lol: and the catchlight is too weak. Correct this and you have a pic fit for an annual report.

Wasn't quite -40C but only a mild -6C but I was completely unprepared. I had warm clothing with me but not quite warm enough. I rifled through my suitcase for every bit of clothing I could put on, but what really saved me were the pyjamas Qantas hand out on every business long distance flight. They are quite warm. I put these on in addition to everything else and it worked. I always knew they would come handy one day.
Nevertheless you managed to express your feelings.
