Flash photography is not about increasing light levels.
It is about controlling the light. Natural light can be really useful but it can also be unusable because it comes from the wrong direction, does not have the desired quality (softness), etc.
I'd say almost never. That kind of power is only needed when you want to compete with bright sunlight, using a large modifier, and requiring larger then normal distances between light modifier and subject, while using HSS.
The AD200 is very hard to beat in terms of versatility and applicability.
I used it to counterbalance sunlight during golden hour with a modifier without running out of power. In harsher conditions, more power can be useful. The new AD300 PRO only offers a modest increase and is hence only of interest to those who want to use the proprietary Godox mount modifiers which are somewhat more compact than Bowens mount light modifiers.
The AD400 PRO is rather popular as it provides a full stop more compared to the AD200 PRO, has a higher battery capacity (~780 AD200-equivalent flashes compared to ~500 for the AD 200 PRO), and supports both the Godox-mount and the Bowens mount (via a fixed adapter) without requiring an S-bracket (like the AD200 PRO does).
The AD600 PRO has even more power, even more battery capacity, a stronger modelling light, but is also a bit bigger and heavier than the AD400 PRO.
I chose both AD200 (for ultimate mobility and supporting lights) and AD600 PRO (for uncompromised performance). The models in between are compromises that did not appeal to me but I can completely see that specific usages can make any of the intermediate models more attractive.

With respect, I do take issue here - not just as a regular member but as a moderator. Why? Comparing the output of any modern DSLR or mirrorless camera to a phone camera is provocative - and especially so when we're talking about Pentax on a Pentax-oriented site. Remember, many posts here are available to view publicly. If we want the best for Pentax as a brand, we should consider how we phrase our critique and make it relevant and objective, not provocative (unless that's valid and warranted).
I agree that phone cameras produce a very "painterly" effect. In that sense, there is a similarity between that effect and aggressive noise reduction and over-sharpening in any other camera and / or post-processing software, albeit to a much lesser extent.
But until we understand the full details of the shot, software and processing parameters, how it looks as an in-camera-processed JPEG, a JPEG produced from RAW by the latest DCU, comparisons from various other RAW development tools, and like-for-like comparisons with the K-1, it's potentially counter-productive to conclude there's a problem with the K-1II. I'm not saying there isn't - just that we ought to be fully informed and do some research before we draw conclusions :o

Thanks Bob! Some lenses you just click with (no pun intended) and the Soligor and I got along like old friends right off the bat. The Irix Thingy is awaiting in next turn in the hot seat. I plan on spending some quality time with it soon, to get better acquainted.
Yes you were missed, I for one was hoping you weren't snowed in without a shovel or something. Hey, you aren't related to the Maple Syrup King, Tyler Vernon? (OK SciFi is a thing for me, mostly vintage, but some of this new stuff is great too)
Nice two-fer on the butterflies. Bizarre coincidence or just photo life on forums, but my next set features them, and some in multiples as well. Being a little south of you, we get a head start on them. ;)

I ain't*, but my anticipation is that "pro" emphasis will not include magic face/iris detection, touch screens, or video.

I’m keeping my K-1 for manual focus lenses and in case it is better for Astro or Macro. I pre-ordered the K-1ll for the autofocus improvement with FA Limiteds and the new zooms.
I’m selling KP and all my APSc lenses (plus some unused F and FA).
Maybe I’m nuts but I’m all-in FF.

For me it depends on the lens and what I am using the camera for. If I have a large telephoto lens then I use the grip for better balance. I used winders and motor drives on my film cameras so a grip feels natural. The K-1 is a big enough camera to use most of the time without a grip. However the grip gives you the extra battery and can hold an additional SD card. Personally I would not have the K-1 without the grip.

f/5.6 1/800 500mm ISO2000. This is a shot I couldn't have gotten with the K3. I would have been down to 1/400 and maybe f4.5 to get the noise down. It was low light in the morning. I would have had movement blur and even at those lower iso values the noise in that light condition on the K3 is quite bad.
I shot the K3 for two or three years, can't remember. I got many fine shots with it, but the image quality degraded in low light. |
