Thanks guys, I'm going to Japan in a couple months so maybe I'll hold off and see if I can find something in a shop there before pulling the trigger.

FA20mm vs A20mm for shooting night sky landscapes

Hi

I've recently had my first chance to try out shooting the milky way with my K-1 and FA31 (got some good shots at F2.8, 50 seconds, ISO 1600), and found it to be quite addictive. While shooting I was left thinking, I wish I could squeeze a bit more into the shot, I thought about stitching shots together for a panorama but at 31mm, might be a bit too much distortion, might try it at a later time with a longer lens. In the meantime I thought about maybe getting a wider lens, it doesn't seem that Pentax make wide angle affordable primes at this stage, so I had a look at what's available used.
There seems to be a few of these available on Ebay Japan that look in reasonable condition. Is the FA20 worth more just because of the autofocus? For night landscape I pretty much just set to infinity manual focus anyway.
I had a look at the Rokinon 20mm, but I think it's a bit large for my taste, the FA31 is about the max physical size I like to deal with.

Thoughts?

That $700 is the official line, maybe you can take it into your local dealer (?) to avoid shipping and insurance costs? I'll wait and see what the reviews are like before deciding on this offer. It's not a small lump of change $700 dollars.

One suggestion that I didn't see would be a timer to show exposure time on top LCD perhaps, this would be helpful in bulb mode or any long exposure. Also a counter to show how many exposures have been taken during interval/multi-exposure shooting, is that already a feature? It seems like it could be, but I haven't seen it.

Thanks guys, no, I didn't have the manual with me, will have a look tonight. I'll double check the pictures it took with the interval composite function too, I guess it must've worked but so gradually I didn't notice.

Hi, not sure if I missed this in the drive mode settings, but was shooting some multi-exposure shots last week and using a wireless shutter which was okay, but would've been slightly easier if I could have just set the multi-exposure shots to run on an interval. Didn't see it when clicking through, tried the interval composite option but that just took a bunch of separate pictures. Is it an available option?

Thanks guys, I'll have another play when I get home. So the selected sub-image (with motion correction on) is just the one that gets used as the top layer to correct for motion, and with any other demosaicing method the selected sub-image is the image that you're editing (by itself) as a single image.

Okay, so I found the mac dev version, so my question is, what is the point of the Sub-image dropdown? In the preview window, am I only looking at the sub-image, or is it still the whole pixel shift image (just using the selected sub-image to demosaic)? E.g. what effect does the selected sub-image have on processing?

Wow, thanks for all the info, I'll definitely have to read through this, I used to use RawTherapee in the early days on Windows, I'll have to have a look at it again now. I did like the output, but prefer the Lightroom catalog and speed. Good to see that it's still going strong.

Thanks guys.
What about clouds? If I'm reading right, pixel shift is best for shorter exposures and to get maximum resolution/sharpness? So I should underexpose since the extra exposures should get more info into the shadows?

Hi, I apologise if this is has been posted somewhere recently, but my search only turned up posts from about a year ago.
I've just bought myself a K-1 and landscape photography is mostly my game, going to New Zealand in a few weeks and I expect that I might want to try snapping some PS shots (having said that, what scenario would I use it over say multi-exposure or just a regular exposure?).

I shoot RAW and process in Lightroom (5.7) and this is clearly an issue still, I haven't even looked at the bundled software yet, but if that's the best thing to use, I guess I'll have to break it out (although my computer doesn't have a CD drive). Is it then just a case of exporting to TIFF and importing into Lightroom?

Hi

I've got this issue and after removing the two face plates I see the screws, but the set of screwdrivers I have are not very good and I can't loosen the screws, can anyone recommend a good brand to use (and the correct size)? Also what adhesive should I use to stick the plates back on with?

Hi all

I have both lenses but only one body (trusty old K-5), I haven't got around to trying to fix my DA21 focusing issues yet so I've been using primarily the FA31 recently, I do miss the FOV the DA gives though. Now I'm not about to get the K-1, and I'm not sure when I will get the full frame Pentax (I will eventually), but out of curiosity was wondering if the FOV for these two lenses on the respective bodies is similar or not?

Good to know someone in Melbourne will have some demo stock, I don't think that I'd be getting one until I head overseas or the second version comes out, but I'll certainly want to try one out, just in case :D
My FA31 would make for a nice replacement for my broken DA21 on full frame I would think.

hmm, turns out that the chinese hood didn't fit between the built-in lens hood, do you know what size lens cap goes on the janco hood? Is it just a standard 58mm pinch cap?

Thanks, do you know how it works with an ND filter (for example) and also lens cap? The ebay option would be better for shipping costs.

Hi

I've just ordered the FA31 and read a lot about the lens hood issues, and have decided that the cheap, glass-less, stacked filters option seems to be the best for me. So now I'm wondering where is the best place to get said cheap filters and how to remove the glass from them? (I'm in Melbourne, Australia so shipping from overseas is probably not an option)

Also, if I use an ND filter on it, it would be best to put it directly on the lens before putting the stacked filter hood on?

There is no public holiday in Melbourne, they just stuffed up the date, I guess it should be Tuesday 8th October.
