Bump for a great lens. And not extremely common.

I have the SMC version. It's one of those lenses that just have a special feel to their output.

I've thought about upgrading to the K-mount, but like you I don't actually use it very often.

zenfolio referral code

So after a lot of reading i've decided to go with zenfolio as a photo hosting service. For anyone curious I chose it over smugmug (which was my second choice) because of thier "collections" option...with smugmug I would have to upload the same picture more than once to get the same effect.

Right now I just have the trial version but in the next week or so I'll be paying for the whole thing. Now I'm sure that I could do a google search and get some random persons refferal code but I'd rather give the bonus to one of you all.

So any zenfolio users out there?

#1 and 4 have an amazing painterly aspect to them, both are stunning.

#2 is also very nice, but might look better as with the surreal HDR "look" (id be curious how one well exposed shot looks).

ANy chance you could give us a few details about how you processed these?

Basic lens set ?

Well I'd say that the "classic" set would be:

(24 or 28mm), 50mm, (85 or 135mm), (200, 300, or macro depending on your interests)

you might want to adjust this for the crop on a digital sensor.

Voigtlander SL lenses - Infinity focus question
Posted By rdc
Replies: 29

This is normal. It is done for two reasons, first becasse every lens will be ever so slightly different and each lens would have to be calibrated individually think of that slight turn that it takes to get your lens into focus now imagine having to do that for every lens that comes out of a factory and then having a precise enough stop so that the lens stops exactly there....not very efficient.

Now the first reason is simply a matter of manufacturing efficiency, but here's the thing even if you had a perfectly calibrated lens it wouldn't matter because it would only be perfect at the temperature at which it was calibrated because as the elements and body (particularly the metal found in older lenses) of the lens expand and contract the focus changes as well. This is the real reason that lenses focus beyond infinity.

Getting infinity focus is no more difficult than focusing on anything else be it autofocus or manual, except for one thing, as you have discovered once you overshoot infinity IQ drops very quickly.

If you're looking for something that you can set without looking through the viewfinder to make sure everything is sharp keep in mind the concept of hyperfocal distance.

To meter with old K mount lenses put the camera in "M" and push the green button, the camera will stop down the lens take a reading and set the shutter speed.

To meter with screw mount lenses put the camera in Av and simply set the apature on the lens to where you want it to be (if your lens has an A-M slider make sure it is in M so that it actually stops down) and your camera will meter the light actually coming into the camera. I find it easiest to focus with the lens wide open and then stop down, meter and shoot, the dimming of the viewfinder at smaler f-stops makes focusing difficult.

Edit: Thats what I love about this forum....people are so quick to help that someone already answered while I was typing my response.

Looking for low contrast lenses

As a theatrical lighting designer I often use my camera to take pictures of stage lighting, perhaps one of the most difficult environments to photograph well: often with obscenely large dynamic ranges.

So here's my theory I often read descriptions of "good" lenses as both being sharp and having high contrast, is this just another way of saying that it is sharp (micro-contrast, edge contrast) or is it contrast across the entire frame. If this is the case could a lens with "poor" contrast be used to compress the dynamic range of a photograph?

However I don't want a crappy lens, can anyone out there suggest some sharp but low contrast lenses (the wider the better) which might make my life a little easier when dealing with those difficult theatre shots?

Ricoh XR Rikenon lenses with K-mount

Yes I think it is the pin that allows the Ricoh lens to communicate apature information to Ricoh bodies, it can get caught in the autofocus screw. Rather than using a razor blade or something just put the focus lever into manual mode which will retract the screw. Or for a permenant solution use a dremel or something and just grind off the pin, unless you are planning on using the lens of a Ricoh body it won't effect the working of the lens at all.

Also like some non-Pentax K-mount lenses the one Ricoh lens that I own had a larger flange by the apature lever than most pentax lenses, it was almost 90 degrees long (rather than just the length of the travel of the lever) the flange ran into the mirror box on my body preventing it from mounting.....the Dremel solved that problem as well.

I rarely tilt my camera slightly off horizontal however rather often I will align the horizon with the diagnal of the frame....however in those cases I don't think any head tilting should be required....rotation in PP solves that problem.

I agree with Serge the bokah of that 55mm is rather harsh, but I can't decide whether or not its a bad thing.

Certinly in traditional terms it dosen't have the silky smooth feel of "good" bokah but I kind of like the look, it adds some interest to the shots.

I don't know what do you all think?

Nikon on Pentax K

I heard somewhere that older Nikon lenses will mount on a Pentax camera....the register distances are pretty similar (Nikon is like .5mm longer) but I have a hard time believing that the mounts are physically compatible.

Is this true?

So I dremeled it off, it works just fine now, although whatever P is its not A the lens only works in M mode.

It is a clever little lens, it has 4 rings, focus, zoom, f-stop, and macro.....the macro feature is literally a built in extension tube, all it does is slide the whole lens away from the camera, very smart it seems like more lenes could do this.

The other two rings are a little more annoying, it only stops down in whole stop steps (which matters sorta), and has a very short focus throw.....a little less than a quarter turn. Now I just have to see how it performs, at the very least its fast for an old zoom.....its a 2.5-3.5 35-70mm

So I bought a random cheap lens from KEH, but I can't get it to mount on my camera, it seems to have the same bayonet tabs as my other k-mount lenses but has a much larger wall thing inside of the apature lever (it is there for like 90 degrees of the lens).

It also has a P setting not an A setting and the mount is labeled R/K.

I think I'm just going to cover the back of the lens very well and dremel off the little wall (because I'm pretty sure that it is what is keeping the lens from mounting) but if its not even a k-mount lens than I should just send it back and get a refund.

I'm pretty sure that with a manual lens on your camera the camera does not use eTTL but rather just fires off a full power burst which may be part of your problem.

K10 autofocus question
Posted By rdc

The best thing about making the AF button the only way to autofocus (not a half-press) is that it allows the shutter to trip without an auto focus lock. Although the ergonomics of the buton are a whole lot worse than my 10D having that button was a key factor in allowing me to switch from Canon.

And b as soneone else said it is physicially impossible to autofocus while set to manual....well I suppose the newer moter-in-lens lenses could do it, but they can manual focus when set to auto so theres really no point.

I've heard good things about that particular Ziess as well

Pentacon's MF lenses have a good reputation, I doubt thier 35mm would be any different, plus all of the lenses will be designed to cover a full 35mm frame, and with a crop sensor you only keep the middle (sharper) part.

None of their auto settings will work, only k-mount autos work
