Pentax K-r @ Black Friday?

Amazon has had the K-r bundled with the 18-55 and 55-300 lenses going for as little as $660 brand new.

This has happened multiple times throughout the past 4 months. I have no doubt in the world that it will happen again.

Wow. How unfortunate. :( I am really starting to dislike how big of a risk this sounds like. I frequent Canon Message Boards as well, and I have never read anywhere NEAR the amount of hardware malfunction stories I have just amassed by doing a quick search with the terms given above. If *that* isn't a sign of a problem, I don't know what is.

Ouch. As much as I love this camera on paper, it seems I may just have to pass. I can't afford missed shots in unpredictable light. (The other issues, I am considering pretty much null and void. They sound quite minor anyway.)

Sorry Pentax. I sincerely like a lot of your ideas... (In-body stabilization, wide-spread MF lens support, super-competative pricing, rugged kit lenses that don't turn as they focus, AF microadjustments and multiple cross point sensors in sub-$1000 bodies, weather-sealing options, great burst rates, etc etc.. )

However, at the end of the day, quality control should never be a question mark. The fact that there is even a debate about this is proof enough for me that I am better off "staying with the pack," as much as I would prefer not to.

This is another thing I like about Pentax. Old MF lenses greatly interest me, and to have them stabilized right out of the gate is awesome.

I hate to do this, but that series tells me nothing at all about the K-R's AF capabilities.
The largest size I can see is 680 x 1024. At that resolution, anything will look good.

(Disclaimer: I mean no offense to you by this post. I'm just trying to point out that most of his images are very small.)

This is EXACTLY why I'm interested in switching. The price, along with the features, is quite nice.
Furthermore, I am NOT heavily invested in Canon gear. I have the kit lens, along with a 55-250 zoom, and a nifty fifty f/1.8. That's it.

However, these problems are still a bit worrisome to me...

To everyone: Thank you VERY MUCH for your replies. I am quite glad to hear that Live View effectively solves all of the focusing problems in tungsten light. That means my tripod work will remain unaffected by this problem, which was a critical requirement of mine.

However, one thing still bothers me: What about rock concerts? Will the K-R choke here given all the different kinds of light available at any given time?

In the past, I had used a friend's Rebel XS equipped with a Transcend Class 10 8GB card. The result? Very slow RAW shooting speed. (I'd estimate about 2fps with an extremely short buffer.)

Unfortunately, I do not currently own such a card, but I already know that the T3 is also crippled in this way. For burst shooting, you are damn-near forced to use JPEG, which shouldn't be the case.

Well, the title of the thread pretty much lays it all out.

I'm currently using a Canon Rebel T3. To be honest, I don't really like it. The viewfinder is extremely small, the camera shoots very slowly in RAW, and the lack of menu options is really starting to bother me.

The Pentax K-R seems to answer all of those problems. Its viewfinder is significantly bigger. It shoots -much- faster, and I enjoy all of the many menu options that are available. To sweeten the deal, it appears its high ISO performance is even better than the T3's, which is quite good already.

However, I'm hesitant to switch, and this is because of the fact that I have been hearing reports about all kinds of problems with the K-R body.

Some of these include:

1. Front-Focusing in Artificial Light.
2. E-Dial Malfunctions
3. Flash Exposure issues.

If these problems did not exist, I wouldn't even think twice about moving over. However, as it stands, I am extremely hesitant. The K-X would actually be an interesting option in and of itself, but the lack of on-screen viewfinder points pretty much kills it for me. By design, it doesn't allow the photographer to make a quick change. You are forced to remove your eye from the viewfinder, which is terrible.

((Any other camera model beyond the K-R is out of my price range, so these are the only two options I am even remotely considering.))

Does anyone out there have any thoughts on this? It's unfortunate that these issues exist, because it keeps potential customers away from their product. :(

Finding a Pentax Equivalent to Canon's 50 mm - F/1.8

I don't mind the crop factor. It's FAR from useless. (IMO.)

Nikon and Sony also have a cheapy 50, so I'm a bit shocked Pentax didn't throw one in there as well...

Granted, manual focus opens me up to sub-$100 pricing anyway.

(And truth be told, the AF ability on that Canon lens was quite pathetic. My best shots were usually Manual anyway.)

Hmm.

Decisions. :ugh:

The title says it all.

Here's a link to Canon's lens, just in cause you're not sure what I speak of here. (It's priced at only $100 brand new.)

Pentax seems to be missing this focal length at a similar price-point, but maybe I'm wrong. Hence this thread...

Any assistance here guys?

I was one of those freaks who could NOT live without the AF indicators.
Hence my purchase of the K-r kit.

That being said, I'm sure you've done your research and I'm guessing you're probably quite happy to have finally made a decision. (I know I was. :D)

Enjoy.

Guess I'm breaking my own rule here by replying, but oh well.

To EVERYONE::

I got this kit from Newegg last Friday. It was a "one-day-only" deal and Pentax happened to be the only camera manufacturer left in stock. I had heard wonderful things about their bodies and the value the Pentax system represents, so I pulled the trigger. Obviously, I had a little buyer's remorse, but I'm over it now. I'm confident in this camera and look forward to getting out there and taking some pictures.

(Oh, and another plus about this whole deal is that I discovered you guys, Pentax Forums. The community is lively here and I appreciate getting responses that show some real thought and consideration behind them. I look forward to returning the favor.)

Thanks once again. Happy shooting!

Your post is amazing. I've ALWAYS wanted to believe that it isn't so much about the equipment, but the photographer and his eye.

However, the internet (*cough* dpreview *cough*) makes you think twice. Hence my thread.

I really do hope what you are saying is true. It gives me a lot of courage going forward...

((Disclaimer:: First, before anything else, I will say that this is NOT a troll topic and I'm NOT meaning to get people angry.))

Anyway, as some of you may already know, I recently purchased a K-R with the 18-55 and 55-300 lenses. It will arrive in a few days.
Though I no longer have any doubts about the strength and flexibility such a kit provides, I wonder what I'm going to do, say, 3 years from now with Pentax. (Assuming the K-r has enough staying power to last that long, which I'm sure it does.)

If Pentax does *not* release a full-frame body, will that hinder the brand from competing at a professional level? As of right now, I am NOT a professional and this has little impact upon my immediate future.
But will it down the road?

I am trying to improve my skills to the point where I might be able to earn a supplementary-income from this art. (Most likely through portrait photography, weddings, etc.)

Will deeply investing in the K-mount system make logical sense if that is my goal?
Or will I have to sell this all off in a few years to support another brand?

Your thoughts?

Oh well, I'm done responding to this. If you guys want to keep it alive, go for it. For my part, I'm finished.

Thanks to all those who made positive, constructive comments. I appreciate it. :)

Have a good one. ;)

Though it's very true that the gear I buy today will continue working even if Pentax folds tomorrow, it would leave me with no upgrade path. I'd be stuck with what I had and that's that.

This might not be such a bad thing if I owned a full-frame camera and lenses to match, but the K-r is no such thing and I own nothing in the way of professional glass. If my goal is to take photography seriously enough to the point of desiring an income from it, access to this kind of equipment becomes imperative.

Thankfully, Pentax IS NOT going out of business and I DO have faith that they will continue to make more cameras. Even now, they are coming closer and closer to the kind of camera one could trust to make a living off of.

Though the K-5 is not a full-frame model, it comes close to the kind of quality professionals would expect and I have faith that the future will only bring improvements on what is already a already stellar design.

No need for bitterness. :-) I just had a little buyer's remorse. :-D

Alright guys, I think it's settled. My drama-filled entry comes to an end. :D

I'm keeping the K-r and hoping for the best. Yes, I did have a pretty strong case of buyer's remorse, but that's only because Pentax is a rather obscure brand in comparison to Canon or Nikon.

I admittedly still wish they were a bit more popular so that I could maybe find their lenses on SALE, but I'm a cheap-ass so what do I know?

Thanks for the responses everyone. Some are rather entertaining, even if they are critical of me. :-D

Thanks guys for all the comments.

Though some of them have been rather derogatory and sarcastic, I probably deserve as much. I *AM* being a bit of a pansy about this. :p

I guess I should just stick to what I love doing and forget about the rest...

It isn't the GEAR that matters anyway.

It's the art. (Much of which has been created with equipment that would now be considered "out of date.")

Hello Pentax Forums. ;)

After recently purchasing a K-R with both the 18-55 and 55-300 zoom lenses for $769.95, I feel a bit worried.

Financially speaking, I know I saved a great deal of money and I'm confident that the K-r is actually a rock solid camera in and of itself. Everything I read about it impresses me and it sounds like this could be a huge step up from my old Canon Rebel XS.

However, I worry very much about the unpopularity of Pentax as a system and I fear for its future. The difficulty in finding individuals who use these cameras makes me uneasy. (Heck, even CameraLabs.com has yet to review and rate a Pentax!)

Plus, I do hear many individuals complaining about Pentax's Flash System and lack of swift auto-focus...

I guess I'm not sure WHAT to think exactly. On one hand, I got such a good price on this that I could maybe even PROFIT from the deal if I'm patient enough to sell it. On the other hand, that would yet again leave me on the search for a camera and I'm getting sick and tired of not taking photographs...

Do you guys have any thoughts on this? I know this is a rather poor introduction on my behalf, as I'm essentially whining here. But I *do* need some input from users of this system who have experienced what it has and has not offered.

Thank you for reading and letting me into your community. I look forward to the responses. :-)
