K5 package value?

Hey Thanks You Guys! I really appreciate the input... like I said I haven't had a lot of time to put into this, so it is great you all taking the time to help me think this through.

I would actually love to keep it all in hopes that one day I could afford the Full Frame Pentax that may come out, someday... but, that may be a while by the looks of things, SO...

...I guess I need to suck it up and and dive into the separate transactions... you guys make some really good points, so later, I will revamp my marketplace posting and go from there.

By the looks of your signatures, you guys have all you need, but if I have something of interest, please PM me and we can talk.

Thanks Again All!

K5 package value?

Hey All,

So, I have a K5 and lenses listed in the marketplace for sale as a package... and I guess I must be asking too much, as it seems the value/demand on this gear has dropped considerably (I really haven't been keeping up to date, not much photography time these days)... therefore, I have only had a couple contacts interested in separate lenses...

...my question/s is: Am I foolish to think I could sell it all as a package? (I am hoping for someone new, wanting to get into Pentax),

AND if I do decide to break it all up and sell separately, will I likely be able to sell the less valuable lenses/gear that would make going through the process worth it?

I am asking for anyone's opinion, but especially the opinion of those of you who have bought and sold Pentax gear over the years and have a finger on the pulse of values.

I would like to make someone a good deal for all of it, but also don't want to give it away (the usual conundrum) in exchange for me not having to deal with a bunch of separate transactions... so, I would also entertain offers by those who might not need all the gear, but who have the time/$ to buy it for resell.

Thanks for taking a look at my listing and for any thoughts you have about what I should be asking for this package.

Here is a link to the listing: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/photographic-equipment-sale/221679-sale-k...kage-deal.html

Cheers!

Sensor Problem Resolution Thread

Thanks JP for your comments and kudos... and as an addendum to my previous post:

Pentax just called me back from a message I left last night. This time Bob assured me Pentax is on it and will fix/replace any of the cameras afflicted with the stains and added that even if a user did not notice the stains until after the 1 year warranty, they would still make the repair at their expense.

I know that is all talk at this point, but all I can do is trust that they will do what they say... if not, I know I chose the wrong camera company.

But for me, so far the track record is good. I have no worries that Pentax is going to stiff me with a faulty camera.... it just may take a little time to get it resolved... no biggie.

Sensor Problem Resolution Thread

**posted this elsewhere as well, but seems pertinent to this thread as well**

Just got off the phone with Paul at the Pentax USA support number: (800) 877-0155

Very encouraging conversation. He acknowledged the problem and indicated that Pentax headquarters knows of the problem as well and that they are going through a discovery phase to determine the extent of the problem and what resolution would be best.

He offered that if I sent the camera in through the regular warranty channels, it would be repaired or replaced at their expense. However, he cautioned that I should really make sure it is indeed 'stained', and that from their position, they are potentially facing many customers that think they have the 'stains' but really just have dirty sensors that need cleaning... I suppose that is inevitable in situations like this and part of the fallout from such a slip up in the QC department, and because of that, Pentax should just grin and bare it and maybe even just do a few free sensor cleanings in reconciliation.

Paul told me that he would send my report to the people handling the issue and I should be hearing back from them once Pentax determines what their response to this will be.

I agree with Stringmike that being confrontational at this point makes no sense. These things happen sometimes and we ought to allow for that, especially in a newly released product.

To put Pentax on the defensive with an angry mob full of unreasonable demands would not be very constructive. I think it better for those of us having this issue to go little out of our way, be understanding, and work with Pentax to help them do the right thing.

After all, most of us have a year before our warranty is out, so there is really no great rush. And also for most of us, I would venture to guess, didn't even know we had 'sensor staining' until we heard about it on some forum.

At least for me, my K-5 still takes awesome shots. And for the 'stains' I have software to remove them. So, I am going to allow Pentax some time to figure things out, turn off this computer, turn on the camera, go outside and have some fun taking pictures.

Oh Great! Now mine has it too!

Just got on the forum to ask about buying a flash and now I have Sensor Pox (aka S.O.P)... hopefully it is not the forum...

Anyway, don't have a lot of time to devote to it at the moment, but I did just pop outside and took some sky shots at different apertures...

Sure enough, at ISO 80, f29-f8 on my 18-55 wr kit lens and with my DA 40mm 2.8 I get them right in the middle of my frame... and if you know where to look, on mine, they are noticeable at ALL apertures, but most egregious from f8 and up... I will do some more shots later and post my findings.

Funny, didn't notice them before, guess the shots I have been taking are busier and wider open... but needless to say, I will be pursuing this with Pentax... as another poster mentioned, "it's not acceptable".

I will also post my findings from my contact with Pentax about the issue and hope others might do the same. I trust Pentax will want to rectify the problem pronto with those of us that didn't wait for all the bugs to be worked out of the camera. That way, we will keep reporting all the GREAT things about the K5.

Cheers!

Vancmann:

Since I posted my concerns about the 'thunk/clunk' within, I have taken hundreds of shots and can happily report that although not many of them are keepers, they all came out as I imagine they should have, with the rattling sensor mechanism operating as designed.

The thing that got me at first was that, out of the box, my K5 didn't make the sound and didn't have the 'feel' it does now when the camera is rotated... I had taken many shots each day until one evening when the 'thunk/clunk' thing started... now I barely notice it, but, others do when they give the camera try... think they broke something... I pretend they did, "WHAT DID YOU DO?!"... then a few tense moments follow before I start laughing...can't help myself.

Have fun with that K5, captures beautifully doesn't it?

Thanks for that TOUGEFC... I was just starting to look up the differences.

And stop down metering I assume would mean setting the camera to spot or center weighted?

Thanks for the feedback all.

Paperbag, I like the way you think... indeed, best of both is the way to go.

But the idea brings up a question on the manual focus lenses, which is typically better, the M series or the A series? I see there are fast 50mm lenses in both categories...

Got a line on a used SMC DA 40mm 2.8 Limited for $250 but also considering a used SMC FA 50mm 1.7 (haven't found that yet but around $225 at KEH)... just wondering about others impressions of these lenses, as this would be my first prime lens.

Ideally, I am looking for a lens for portrait work as well as just all around ability to produce professional looking results (obviously I have something to do with that as well, but you know what I mean). I shoot a K5.

Thanks for any advice!

Auto rotating pictures on k-x

No trick, just a menu setting... it is in the menu: C 3 Number 19.

For picture playback/review, if you select '2' then you can see your 'portrait' framed shots 'full sized' on the cameras screen, but you have to turn the camera for it to be right side up...

Otherwise, the image is reduced in size so that it will fit in the 'landscape' orientation and then is 'auto-rotated' and displayed too small to see IMHO.

Have Fun with that Kx!

Low K5 kit price, $1573

Agreed. With the cheaper than the rest, caution is a must... however, I am happy with my single purchase from Comp-u-plus and would buy from them again, but it seems their prices for accessories are not as good as the camera prices.

I did call them before purchasing to confirm availability (at the time there was 2 left, I got one of them) and price and they followed up with a couple emails and then after purchasing they had a decent interface for tracking.

Anyway, my 2 cents.

Now I am all about the K5 again as I have found out that the rattle within is a normal sound made by the image stabilization mechanism... So now, I am sharing where I purchased my K5 with 18-55 wr lens, so that others interested in the K5 can have yet another option of where to buy.

I think I got a great price considering it was just released: $1573.00 (plus $15 shipping).

I got it from Comp-u-plus.com and at first was a little curious as to why it was so much cheaper than the rest, but I checked them out to my satisfaction and found them to be, in my one purchase, a good source with fast shipping and responsive customer service.

However, I just checked and right now they appear not have any K5's in stock ( but they do have the Kr's for anyone interested, and although I have not been shopping for those, it may be a good price.)

Also, check provantage.com I believe they are selling the kit for $1616.00 but I do not have any experience purchasing from them, Good Luck

THANK YOU EVERYONE! You have assuaged my fears... I can now, without reservation, proudly consider myself still within the ranks of the Pentax ilk.

I have just returned from a morning shooting session here on the Oregon Coast (see photo) and eagerly went through my shots to see if I could notice any ill effects of the "Pentax Thud, Rattle and Clunk.

Happily, I can report that indeed I am foolish and should have checked the forum more thoroughly, perhaps searching for this issue in other cameras (I just searched specifically for the K5).

I did however check the manual after discovering the "problem" and all it says about the SR, is that, "The camera may generate some operating noise when shaken"... it is actually more like operating racket in my opinion, noisier even than my Kx... and it really did not become noticeable until after several days of shooting. I am wondering if maybe I had to break it in and loosen it up a little before it actually started moving around as much as it is designed to... it really does sound like a loose part rattling around inside, hell I could even entertain a baby with it. If I had checked the K5 out at camera shop, I would have been skeptical when the salesperson told me that it was, "normal".

SO, I am glad I have you lot out there to tell me in great numbers, that there is nothing to be concerned about.

I do agree with one of the replies that it could be helpful, to those of us that never read manuals that is, if there was a sticker on the camera when you got it out of the box, that in bold lettering said, "DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY, YOUR CAMERA IS NOT BROKEN".

Thanks Again for all the replies. And, I promise in the future to search the posts more diligently before posting in a panic, normally I am not like that, but when you just spent 1600 bucks... well you know.

Happy Shootin' n Rattlin' All!

Forgive me if I am double replying here (just sent a reply I thought)...

...Lexurian, I do notice a little sound in my Kx that is not dissimilar, but nothing like the slide-CLUNK sound the K5 is now making . I have been shooting with it a lot this week and haven't noticed the sound until tonight, strange I know... could it perhaps just now be getting broken in and has loosened up a little and so is more noticeable?... I am inexperienced with the way in-camera stabilization should sound...

JohnBee, no K5 nearby but great idea, perhaps when I go into the city I can compare with one at a camera shop.

Thanks for the replies!

Ok... just found a couple posts about K7's with loose parts, but I am having a hard time believing the sounds I am hearing are normal, especially since it hasn't noticeable until today and then there is the awful grinding sound when in live view. My Kx does make a slight sound, but nothing like the K5 which actually goes 'clunk'. I would think, as with the sound of the shutter release, that if anything, the K5 should be quieter in all respects.

I was going to attach a video taken with my Kx, but I don't have a program to make it small enough to upload, perhaps later.

For now am prepared to be stupid here and learn from you more experienced Pentaxians that these sounds are normal, and if so, GREAT! I don't have to send the camera back and can keep enjoying taking pictures.

Thanks again for any input! And please forgive this newbie if all of you have cameras with loose innards that go CLUNK!

...NO, I didn't drop it... I just picked it up to go out and try some night shots and, "what the hell was that?!". Something is seriously loose and sliding back and forth inside the body of the camera. Either when moving the body side to side (gently shaking it) or when I move it from horizontal to vertical, as one would when switching from landscape to portrait. What ever part it is, it slides back and forth at least a 1/16" - 1/8" when rotating the camera... funny thing is though, it still is taking pictures fine as far as I can tell... what could be so loose inside that wouldn't effect the operation of the camera ???

As you can imagine I am a little dismayed and will be returning the camera tomorrow (the reseller says they have a 30 day money back), in hopes that they have a replacement and that this is just a VERY RARE problem.

I just received the camera Monday and have taken all of 400 shots testing it... I didn't even get to go out in any extreme weather yet!

For me, this is an upgrade from the Kx as I wanted a more pro-featured camera. And because I had been enjoying what Pentax has to offer, since buying the Kx (my first DSLR), I thought I would stick with Pentax for my first serious camera and potentially for some time to come (lots of great lenses to buy)... I am now wondering if that is such a good idea given this problem.

Has anyone else out there had any parts come loose suddenly? Perhaps in a K7 if not a K5? (same body right?)

For the past hour I have been examining the camera trying to determine what it might be. It sounds as if it is somewhere under the viewfinder and above the mirror mechanism, yet when I put it in 'mirror up' or 'live view' mode, it stops whatever it is from sliding around but starts making a hesitant, grinding sound that I know cannot be normal, so, I guess it has something to do with the image stabilization motors.

I write this (my first post) in hopes of hearing any ideas or thoughts and to caution anyone considering a K5 at this point. Hopefully, this is just an isolated case and I am the only one experiencing this issue, I will keep the forum posted.

A thought just came to me... I will make a video clip of the problem camera (I think it will show up in the audio) with my Kx and make another post here including the clip. Perhaps that will be helpful to those more familiar with the construction of these cameras in making a guess as to what the problem might be.

Thanks for any input, and sorry to all those looking for yet another positive report about the K5.

I am sure after this is resolved, I will love the camera. That is, if the past several days of shooting are any indication. It has been a real pleasure getting to know this camera. After all, the K5 is much more capable than the Kx and the image quality is noticeably better (not by leaps and bounds though, the Kx does a rather nice job), so in the end I imagine I will stick with Pentax... I am not quite ready to jump ship yet and swim for Canikon shores
