There are so many ways to convert colour to b&w, and sometimes the outcome varies greatly. This link is for gimp but Photoshop of course has all of these as well. Once you take layers into account so you can convert different parts of an images in different ways the options are almost limitless. https://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Color2BW/ |

As it happens I agree with the premise of the article this thread is (was?) about. The same is true in most of life. Many years ago I was a very good dinghy sailor, and a back-of-the-fleet type was convinced he would do better in my boat than his - they were different types. So we swapped for a race and it was never so easy to beat the hot-shot as it was that day, sailing the same kind of boat, and he still trailed in at the back of the fleet. Sadly the resulting disillusionment probably was a factor in his ending his sailing career. (Mine has ended through moving, through major surgery and through the damage done to my joints by many years of very competitive dinghy racing)

Managed eventually to order the upgrade, it's fine now. Had to remove the images from the catalogue and reimport them. Now it's off to play with the new features in LR6. I have a set of photos taken for HDR that I never managed to make work before, they would be a good start IMHO. The support for touch-enabled computers might be interesting as well if it will take input from my tablet.
I see I've managed to skip a 'new import experience'!

Still weird. I replaced my original lrp file with the one posted above, no joy. I've tried deleting photos from the catalogue and reimporting, and importing a new photo (import in Lightroom, I used Microsoft Photo Gallery to import from the memory card to the PC). All to no avail.
However if I select Develop, go to the Lens Corrections, tick 'Enable Profile Corrections' then as soon as I select 'Pentax' from the maker dropdown it picks up the lens correctly and fixes any distortion....
I'm baffled. Maybe it's worth £60 just to un-baffle myself.

Weird. The file is already there in my copy of LR but it doesn't recognised the lens. Puzzled.
It's in D:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7.1\Resources\LensProfiles\1.0\Pentax
(I install programs into D: not C: if they let me.)

Compared the two profile files using Notepad++, the one posted above and the one I have, and the one above has some extra lines in in many places:
stCamera:LensInfo="160/10 850/10 35/10 56/10"
stCamera:Lens="HD PENTAX-DA 16-85mm F3.5-5.6 ED DC WR"
I'll rename the existing one and try this. Also I not that I have ACR 8.7.1, but there is version 8.8 on the Adobe website. That might be worth a whirl if the above doesn't fix it.

Thanks, I'll have a go with the file kh1234567890 has attached. If that doesn't work I'll get the upgrade which is just under £60.
What is weird though and worth of investigation is that the Adobe Lens Profile Support page lists this:
HD PENTAX-DA 16-85mm F3.5-5.6 ED DC WR Pentax 5.7/8.7
I believe 5.7 refers to the version of Lightroom, so maybe all I need to do is to update Camera Raw.

So I'm the proud owner of a DA 16-85mm lens, but Lightroom 5 doesn't have a profile for it, and there are no updates available for my version of LR.
I don't really want to spend £100+ on Lightroom 6 (there doesn't seem to be an upgrade price, no surprise since they are pushing the cloud version), was wondering if there is a profile somewhere I can download.

Thanks, I've ordered a Dell. TFT Central reports that the panel is an LM240WU9-SLA1, with 8-bit +FRC (10-bit) colour depth. |

Thinking of buying a Dell U2413 but what else should I consider? It will be used alongside an Eizo S2242W and I mostly do photography. I don't play games or watch videos so weaknesses in those areas don't bother me.
Absolute Requirements: - Under £400 including VAT etc.
- 24" - there isn't room on my desk for a bigger monitor
- DVI & HDMI connections
- Tilt, swivel, height, rotate stand adjustment
Big Pluses for: - 1920 x 1200 resolution

Agree with the post above that this is a result of the filter being really a polarising filter. Still think Cokin-style filters are the way to go for quality of result, though they can be fiddly to use.

There are a zillion (OK not quite!) ways to convert colour to B&W in post-processing, and if you use Photoshop or some other editor with layers you can apply different conversions to different parts of an image. What works best varies according to the image and what you are trying to achieve.
Photoshop can emulate all coloured filters for B&W work, and you can emulate different kinds of film. There are also products you can buy which emulate different kinds of film and wet print techniques.
I can't see any reason to take B&W images. Once you have done that your options are limited.

I imagine you are getting vignetting with wide lenses as the filter is longer than a plain filter. I use Cokin-style size P filters - the adapter ring is very short and they are big enough to use on any of my lenses. I stack them if necessary to get the shutter speed I want.

I was using a K7. The high ISO performance was poor and the dynamic range wasn't wonderful. Using a K5ii now and both are substantially better. If I didn't do the sort of photography they made a difference to, getting the new body wouldn't have improved the IQ.
Found that I was encountering artefacts in images from the 55-300 lens, took a gulp and got a 60-250 and a few test shots the day it arrived showed how much better the IQ was.
Of course the artistic merit is a completely different matter. I have some lovely images taken with my Canon A70. And wonderful though the 60-250 is, it's a beast to carry up hills for example.

If I had unlimited financial resources then probably yes, but I don't so I'll stick with my K5ii and maybe spend some money on more lenses.

You have read my mind! I also wanted the bottom cropping to remove the to me distracting & ugly wall & lines on the road, and the yellow blob you have cloned out I would have quietened down. Ditto the bottle.
I would also like a bit more room above his head - for me the original framing is too low including far too much wall.

The Coolpix will also have in-camera processing designed to produce a sharp output. In contrast there is usually no in-camera processing (including sharpening) applied to a RAW (DNG or PEF) file.
Set your camera to RAW+ e.g. so it creates both a PEF/DNG and a JPG. Set the size of the JPG to be the same as the size JPF produced by the Nikon. Now you are starting to compare apples with apples, though of course the processing the K3 does will differ from that of the Nikon.
I see there's another insult above as well, 'amateurs'. You are not being picked on, you are so convinced you are right that there is something wrong with the hardware that your mind is closed to any other explanation in which case why did you bother posting here?

Only the second link works.
Personally for now I would jack the SDD, get a second HDD and mirror the disk contents. These are your valuable photos, after all. Can't comment on the mobo, I have used Gigabyte for some time. However I do agree with the choice of an mATX mobo.
The savings would also partly pay for a Spyder or similar to get more accurate colours on your screen.
Have you tried the keyboard / mouse combo? What is sold as ergonomic and what suits you are often two rather different things.

The two UK clubs I've belonged and the one I considered joining had no agenda about what kit was used. It was all about the photos (competitions), talks & visits. There was normally no personal kit along at meetings except the odd one that did 'macros' or some similar topic. I never went to those, they are not my 'thing'.
