Thanks folks you were on the money! in the end I was forced to get out the sensor cleaning kit.
Unfortunately I forgot to take a "sensor dust image" before trying to blow the dust away, but I did afterwards and there was still a spot. I could swear that there was nothing visible on the sensor after looking REAL close, but I swabbed the sensor once each way with a different side of the swab as they recommend and it's crystal clean now.
DMS I like the lens a lot, but I don't really travel with it except when it's in the trunk of the car. (the definition of a bad lens right, the one you dont have with you all the time ;-))
Here in switzerland I'm normally on the train......
Thanks

Hi Folks,
I have an old copy of this lens. SMC Pentax 85-210mm F3.5 Reviews - K Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database
Someone dropped it on a beach a long time ago and I got given it. I took it apart and cleaned it up, got it back together and calibrated and it worked well.
I've not used it for a year or two and have started to play with it again (it's on my k7). When at full zoom I get some weird spots on the pictures (besides the obvious hair :-)).
Does anyone have a feel of where I should go to try and clean the lens, cant see anything obvious on glass or just looking through it. Which of the groups / elements would come into focus like that at full zoom?
Or might it be on the sensor?
One pic show it the next one nothing.
Thanks a million for any ideas.

Hi Folks,
I often use raw for it's ability to push the exposure in Photoshop. However recently I have been finding some strange banding when pushing (too?) far. In this picture, which is obviously too dark to be useful but which is a good example of the problem, you see green banding to the left and to the centre right. Pushing exposure should make general noise,no?
Anyone else seen this banding? Any ideas?

Brett

Hi Folks,
I did some shooting this morning over the St Laurance at Montreal. It was - 20 C (-4F). Had to shoot blind the whole time as my mirror would not come down. I was in bulb mode the while time (30s to 5 minute shots). When I got home I shot a normal timed (1/500) shot and the mirror returned perfectly, shot a bulb shot and it also returned perfectly.
I am guessing the mirror release mechanism froze.
Anyone else had this problem?
Regards
Brett

Hi All,
I bought a dropped spottie from Andy on the forum and have managed to repair it to almost full working order. I shot the first spool this weekend and it worked great except for 3 pics out of 24 which had light leakage.
I changed the seals at the back and on the sides of the rear cover (and the mirror foam) before the spool but i get the light leakage seen below.
It seems as though it is coming from the top , i am thinking the viewfinder - or possibly when I change lenses. The first pic was at the start of the spool the last two were towards the end (next to each other) - all other pictures were correctly exposed.
the question is has anybody seen this before and found the cause?
Thanks all
Brett

Update- SUCCESS
Thanks for the advice Steve but I was hard headed :) and went with Jon Goodmans steps and attacked the mirror with alcohol and pec pads letting the alcohol do the work and the pec pads do the very gentle lifting after a few minutes of soaking- it worked famously. My mirror is now sparkling. I replaced all the light seals and the camera shock absorbing foam at the same time (thanks Jon) and my Spotmatic II now looks good as new!
Now for some photography!!

Hello,
My mirror felt shock absorber has turned to jam and is stuck lots of goo to the mirror.
I know it is sensitive but I would like to know who has tried to clean their mirror and did it end in disaster or can it be done carefully.
I have the nice new seals from Jon Goodman but before I install them I would like to attach that mirror.
Note that am fairly comfortable with technical jobs, lens and shutter repairs etc etc.
Best regards

Hello,
I have been offered a 135 mm f3.5 SMC(k) lens for a song. It seems a niceish lens for the price.
It seems that the SMC's are slightly better rated than the M versions.
My question is -- How does one tell the difference (generally) between an older SMC(K) lens and the later M versions? The photos on this site appear identical. (But i can not see the front ring in the photos)
Best regards

Hmmmmm, if I knew it was only 20 bucks I would definitely have taken it!
As I said - from my experience you WILL need it, unfortunately!

Penmaker,
I am exchanging heated words with Pentax at the moment about their warranty policy at the moment. (essentially I found it unfair that the months taken to repair the camera count towards using up the 1 year waranty period) I am taking them to the small claims court (on principal:)).
I have however talked to Mastercard and was very pleasantly surprised by their professionalism and their cover. I suggest you call them and have a short chat about their coverage, they (or Visa/Amex) add a 1 year extension automatically on most card purchases. If you need more then 1 year -you might have to buy it.
Unfortunately from my experience you will need it, but it is not right that you should pay for it, a new camera should last more than a couple of years!
Best regards

Hi here I was talking about the z1p - so it all makes perfect sense!
Thanks for the tip on the K 1000 manual, I have downloaded it, very informative!

Thanks Demp10, that concept of *proportional* control of the aperture from the wide open setting makes a lot of sense. The lens is always wide open while composing etc. so the camera knows the wide open exposure and the mechanical linkage tells it *proportionally* how many f-stops it WILL be closed down when the shutter is released.
Excellent!

Hi Jolepp,
Thanks for the info! It seems to me that M-lenses on the z1p work the same way though? It seems as though the body knows the aperture of this manual lens even though it has no A setting! If i change the aperture manually (the only way on these old lenses) then the body immediately gives me feedback that it is over/under exposed (while i am in Hyp M mode).
It seems to me that the body must "know" the aperture to calculate this? Even though it does not indicate it to the user! How does the body know? Or maybe it doesn't and I will end up with a spool of terrible exposures?
Regards

Hi all, thanks for the replies,
I would like to clarify the terminology you used, and a confusion in my head regarding specifically M type lenses on my z1p :)
When you say the camera knows "how much the lens is stopped down" how does this differ from tellIng the body the aperture?
If I understand correctly, the body stops down the lens only at the point that you actually fire the shutter. How does the body know how much light will enter at that point if it does not know where the aperture is set to while you are composing the shot and setting T and A BEFORE the shot!
Thanks a million!
