Our recent trip to a South African National Park resulted in some really interesting footage. We stumbled upon hyena cubs of about 2 weeks old.Telling the sex of hyena cubs however, is almost impossible. Hyena females have an inflated clitoris and it even has erectile tissue and a gland, just like the ***** of a male hyena. Hyenas are also part of a very small group of animals that give birth through their clitoris, which is very narrow and makes this task even more difficult. This results in 10% of hyena females dying during child birth. It doesn’t really help that hyena cubs are the largest among carnivorous predators in relation to their mothers’ weight.
To make things even more bizarre, females also have a fake scrotum as a result of an enlarged vulva, resulting in the appearance of testicles with fatty tissue. It is mainly because of this that the myth of a hyena being hermaphrodite got perpetuated. Females also have higher levels of testosterone than males, which accounts for them being slightly larger and more aggressive than males.

Nature Leopards Mating

The Leopard, one of Africa’s Big Five, is an evasive and solitary animal. In fact, they go out of their way to avoid one another, except when a pair comes together to mate. Males mark their territory with urine and tree scratching points to defend it against other males. When in heat a female leopard attracts males by the smell of her urine. The estrous cycle lasts about 46 days and the female usually is in heat for 6–7 days.A male and female may stay together for several days, during which they will mate repeatedly before parting again.

We saw these two Rhinos about a month ago. Sadly, when we went to check up on them, we got the news that one of them was poached. Poaching is an increasing problem facing South Africa’s rhinoceros population. Only about 11,000 white rhinos survive in the wild, and many organizations are working to protect this much loved animal.

Nature Quarrel within a Lion Pride

These lions were captured in a game reserve. The Lion pride consisted of about 8 lions. It is however possible that some captive bred lions were introduced into the wild environment, but the rangers didn't say anything. But I do think it's maybe a recessive gene or a case of melonism.

I have seen similar spots on a wild lion in the Kruger national park, but it was much lighter than these spots. A white lion is another example of a recessive trademark that manifests among lions.

Three females of the pride went on the hunt and caught a baby Giraffe. One female however did not allow the male lion to eat first and he viciously attacked her. In the Photos above you can see the injuries that she sustained after a 10 min fight with the male. At one point it looked like he wanted to kill the female, she is very lucky to be alive.

They are slender, well camouflaged, and extremely adaptable when it comes to habitat, as long as they can remain close to a water source. They have to drink preferably twice a day. With their heads down when they drink, they are quite vulnerable to predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas. Luckily the old adage of "safety in numbers" applies to a large extent.

One of the reasons why this is one of Africa's most endangered species is because Wild Dogs were blamed for an antelope decline and they were shot on site :sniper: . Luckily on this day we spotted the illusive Wild Dog. This one was part of a pack of three, one of them had a huge gash on the top of its head.
